Mario Paolone

Mario Paolone received the M.Sc. (with honors) and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 1998 and 2002, respectively. In 2005, he was appointed assistant professor in power systems at the University of Bologna where he was with the Power Systems laboratory until 2011. In 2010, he received the Associate Professor eligibility from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy. Since 2011 he joined the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland, where he is now Full Professor, Chair of the Distributed Electrical Systems laboratory and Head of the Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research (SCCER) FURIES (Future Swiss Electrical infrastructure). He was co-chairperson of the technical programme committees of the 9th edition of the International Conference of Power Systems Transients (IPST 2009) and of the 2016 Power Systems Computation Conference (PSCC 2016). He was chair of the technical programme committee of the 2018 Power Systems Computation Conference (PSCC 2018). In 2013, he was the recipient of the IEEE EMC Society Technical Achievement Award. He was co-author of several papers that received the following awards: best IEEE Transactions on EMC paper award for the year 2017, in 2014 best paper award at the 13th International Conference on Probabilistic Methods Applied to Power Systems, Durham, UK, in 2013 Basil Papadias best paper award at the 2013 IEEE PowerTech, Grenoble, France, in 2008 best paper award at the International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC). He was the founder Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal Sustainable Energy, Grids and Networks and was Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. His research interests are in power systems with particular reference to real-time monitoring and operation, power system protections, power systems dynamics and power system transients. Mario Paolone is author or coauthor of over 300 scientific papers published in reviewed journals and international conferences.

A review of time reversal-based methods applied to fault location in power networks

Electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR)-based methods have been applied to the problem of fault location in power networks since 2012. Over the past decade, considerable theoretical investigations have led to a continuous improvement of the EMTR method in terms of fault location accuracy and efficiency. Meanwhile, different full-scale experiments, including pilot tests, were carried out, demonstrating the applicability and robustness of the EMTR method when applied to real power-system environments. This paper presents a review of the foregoing theoretical and experimental studies. Furthermore, suggestions for future studies are propounded, along with discussing various challenging research questions that still need to be addressed.

Coordinated day-ahead dispatch of multiple power distribution grids hosting stochastic resources: An ADMM-based framework

This work presents an optimization framework to aggregate the power and energy flexibilities in an interconnected power distribution systems. The aggregation framework is used to compute the day-ahead dispatch plans of multiple and interconnected distribution grids operating at different voltage levels. Specifically, the proposed framework optimizes the dispatch plan of an upstream medium voltage (MV) grid accounting for the flexibility offered by downstream low voltage (LV) grids and the knowledge of the uncertainties of the stochastic resources. The framework considers grid, i.e., operational limits on the nodal voltages, lines, and transformer capacity using a linearized grid model, and controllable resources’ constraints. The dispatching problem is formulated as a stochastic-optimization scheme considering uncertainty on stochastic power generation and demands and the voltage imposed by the upstream grid. The problem is solved by a distributed optimization method relying on the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) that splits the main problem into an aggregator problem (solved at the MV-grid level) and several local problems (solved at the MV-connected-controllable-resources and LV-grid levels). The use of distributed optimization enables a decentralized dispatch computation where the centralized aggregator is agnostic about the parameters/models of the participating resources and downstream grids. The framework is validated for interconnected CIGRE medium- and low-voltage networks hosting heterogeneous stochastic and controllable resources.

Design of a Hyperloop System MockUp

The thorough development of the hyperloop system does require the availability of reduced-scale models. They can be used for the fast prototyping of various components, as well as for studying critical phenomena that takes place in this peculiar transportation system without the need to develop complex and expensive full-scale setups. In this respect, in this paper, we present a process for the optimal assessment of the scaling factor; it is to be used for the development of a reduced-scale hyperloop model, starting from the knowledge of the technical characteristics of its full-scale counterpart. The objective of the proposed process is the minimisation of the difference between the normalized power profiles associated with the reduced-scale and full-scale models of a hyperloop capsule traveling along a pre-defined trajectory with a pre-determined speed profile. By considering the hyperloop full-scale model as a reference, we propose a set of equations that link the above-mentioned metric with the constraints dictated by the kinematics of the hyperloop capsule, the capsule's battery-energy storage and propulsion systems, the capsule's aerodynamics, and the operating environmental conditions. We then derive a closed-form expression for the assessment of the optimal scaling factor and eventually use it to study the scaled-down version of an application example of a realistic hyperloop system.
