Seepage and settlement monitoring for earth embankment dams using fully distributed sensing along optical fibers

A method for seepage and settlement monitoring in earth embankment dams using fully distributed sensing along optical fibres is proposed. A model is developed for simulating and monitoring seepage and settlement systems. This model relates the strains and the temperature changes to the fiber Brillouin gain spectrum in the embankment dam embedding the optical fiber sensors. The model consists of two parts. Submodel 1 addresses the simulation of seepage inside the embankment dam. Submodel 2 relates the measurement of the fiber Brillouin gain spectrum to the changes in temperature and strain inside the embankment dam. Both the changes in temperature and strain during the process are used to reveal serious seepages and settlements occurring inside the embankment dam. The continuously decreasing temperature curve shows an abrupt dramatic increasing rate, which shows that the change is not caused by the temperature of the seepage water but the strain. In this paper, as an example, a model filled with the soil from Yellow River is built and bare optical fibers are embedded under different soil layers near the seepage path. The simulated seepage flows under various flow rates are monitored using the optical fibers and measured by a DiTeSt -STA202 distributed temperature and strain analyzer. A partial settlement within the embankment dam model is observed.

Fiber bragg gratings in polymer optical fibers

Polymer optical fibers (POF) have received increased attention in recent years in the fields of data communication and sensing applications. The lower cost and higher flexibility are the main advantages of POF compared to silica fibers and make them interesting candidates for Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor applications. FBG are convenient measurement devices for strain and temperature measurements, as they can be multiplexed within one fiber yielding a sensor array and the fiber can be embedded in structures. This work investigated the possibility of producing FBG in polymer fibers and their use as sensor units. It could be shown that using excimer laser irradiation at 308 nm, it is possible to write FBG in single-mode POF employing a standard phase mask, side writing technique. Index changes of up to 1.7 × 10-4 and reflectivies of up to 87% could be reached. The induced refractive index change due to pulsed UV irradiation was shown to be negative. The polymer material of the core (Polystyrene (PS) / Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)) was not sensitized prior to irradiation. During the grating formation an irradiation induced insertion loss of up to 11 dB/cm was observed. Excimer laser written FBG showed stability of over 9 months for approximately 40% of written FBG. Results of FBG writing using femto second laser irradiation showed FBG with reflectivities of up to 1.2 × 10-4, however these POFBG were not stable. The POFBG were characterized using optical low coherence reflectometry (OLCR) which enables to calculate the FBG location and length as well as the induced amplitude Δnac and mean refractive index change Δndc. Taking into account fiber and insertion losses, good agreement of these calculations and measurements were found. The results show that large variations of the induced index change result from irradiation. Local index change peaks of up to 4 times the mean value were observed, indicating inhomogeneity of the fiber material. Birefringence in the core of the POF (≈ 1.2 × 10-3) is up to a factor 3 higher than in the cladding which is due to the PS content within the core. The birefringence is due to inelastic strain and stress induced in the drawing process. Annealing, uniform irradiation and FBG writing using 308 nm excimer laser light induces a decrease of the absolute birefringence value. The changes upon irradiation are confined to the core of the fiber. Large variations in the initial and final birefringence before and after irradiation support the findings of the OLCR measurements indicating material inhomogeneities in the fiber. POFBG were found to be sensitive to relative humidity, temperature and strain. This is in contrast to glass fiber FBG which do not show humidity sensitivity. POFBG relative humidity sensitivity is non-linear with a change of up to 8 nm for a RH change of ≈ 100%. The non-linearity is introduced by a non-linear water sorption process. The POF grating response to temperature changes under dry conditions (1.5±1 % RH) is –10±0.5 pm/°C. The temperature response of the FBG submerged in water is –36±2 pm/°C due to an increased thermal expansion coefficient and a change in polarizability. Under ambient conditions the grating response to heating is typically ≈ –138 pm/°C, predominantly due to a change in POF swelling, i.e changes in relative humidity and POF water content. The diffusion coefficient of water in this POF at 23.5°C is 6.7 × 10-9cm2/s for sorption and 10 × 10-9cm2/s for desorption. Equilibrium of water content within the fiber and the surrounding air is typically reached after approximately one hour. Calculation showed that a reduction of the fiber diameter can increase this humidity sensitivity response time down to approximately 5 minutes for a fiber diameter of 25 µm.

Brillouin Distributed Fibre Sensing: State of the Art and Perspectives

Developed societies require more and more information for their safety and for their economic development. Recent disasters due to landslides, fires in tunnels and collapses of bridges are a source of serious concern on the part of the public which seeks for more safety and for an efficient prevention of these frequent recurrences of dangers. Sensing in adverse environment and extreme conditions requires dedicated techniques. Quite recent technologies may offer novel valuable solutions and give rise to a strenuous research effort. Optical technologies are an essential actor owing to their tremendous capability to transmit and process a high density of information. Optical fibre is a key component for these technologies and its potential for optical processing and for collecting information as sensing probe is still widely unexplored. The development and the popularity of telecommunications have entirely screened the fact that optical fibres may be efficiently used for sensing purposes. In this paper we present applications of a novel technique using optical fibres to monitor large structures for safety purpose. The fibre is used as sensing element and can provide distributed measurements of quantities like temperature or strain. In other words a value of temperature and/or strain can be obtained for any point along the fibre. This is made possible by using a nonlinear optical effect in the fibre called Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS). Optical fibre sensors based on stimulated Brillouin scattering have now clearly demonstrated their excellent capability for long-range distributed strain and temperature measurements. The Brillouin interaction causes the coupling between optical and acoustic waves when a resonance condition is fulfilled. It turns out that this resonance condition is strain and temperature-dependent, so that determining the resonance frequency directly provides a measure of temperature or strain. The resonance frequency is an intrinsic property of the material that may be observed in any silica fibre. This is very attractive since the bare fibre itself acts as sensing element without any special processing or preparation on the fibre. Standard optical cables may thus be used, resulting in a low-cost sensing element that may be left in the structure. Since the optical effect only depends on the fibre material, it is absolutely stable in time and independent of the instrument. Different measurements performed over a long-term period are thus fully comparable. The latest developments in this class of sensors will be shown, such as the possibility to measure with a spatial resolution of 10 cm and below, while preserving the full accuracy on the determination of temperature and strain. Illustrative examples of site measurements will be presented and future prospects will be discussed.

Weaving our way towards a new generation of ﬁbre-optic chemical sensors based on spider silk

From the spider’s perspective, silk is not only a building material but also a safety net, a weapon and a sensory organ to detect the presence of preys on its web. Indeed, this primeval material has been shaped over hundreds of millions of years by spiders to create a myriad of silk ﬁbre types with different level of toughness, elasticity, stickiness depending on its attributed function in the web. From a human perspective, scientists are currently working on harnessing all the extraordinary properties of this material for applications spiders would never thought of, from biocompatible tissue engineering (enhancement of skin regeneration and nerve guides) to biodegradable electronics and development of specialised textile and composites. However, the potential of using spider silk ﬁbre for chemical sensing has been overlooked. In this communication, we will explore the potential of using spider silk as a new type of ﬁbre optic chemical sensor in a fully bio-inspired approach.
