Prediction of fatigue life of reinforced concrete bridges using Fracture Mechanics

With the occurrence of higher and more frequent axle loads, bridges are more solicited by fatigue loading. Bridge elements like deck slabs are subjected to a high number of stress cycles at relatively small stress magnitudes. The application of Fracture Mechanics as a useful tool for the analysis of fatigue crack growth in steel elements was demonstrated by Paris et al. in the early 1960s. With respect to reinforced concrete, the fatigue strength of the steel reinforcement is determinant. The fatigue behaviour of the steel reinforcement is similar to that of structural steel. The fatigue relevant parameters are the stress ranges, the number of fatigue cycles and stress concentrations. This paper presents a study to predict the fatigue life of steel reinforcement based on the Paris law. The method will be validated by a case study.

Fatigue Behaviour of Steel Reinforcement Bars at Very High Number of Cycles

A large portion of reinforced concrete (RC) bridges in the western world were built in the second half of the last century. RC bridge deck slabs are nowadays often subjected to increased traffic loading and volume than originally designed for and thus, steel reinforcement bars (rebars) are more susceptible to fatigue damage. Fatigue life of rebars can be largely affected by the crack initiation phase characterised by the growth of short cracks. The approaches available for fatigue damage evaluation of rebars fail to predict the crack initiation phase. Microstructural barriers control the short crack behaviour which can be significantly different from the stable long crack growth described by Paris' law. The stochastic nature of the fatigue life comes mainly from the scatter of these short cracks. Research on this domain is attractive since it can help to understand more accurately the fatigue behaviour of rebars. A better understanding can result in more accurate fatigue damage evaluation of RC elements. The aim of this thesis is to predict the scatter and fatigue behaviour of hot rolled (HR), cold worked (CW) as well as quenched and self-tempered (QST) rebars incorporating the crack initiation phase. The research commences with an experimental investigation on the fatigue strength of QST rebars under high and very high cycle fatigue (HCF-VHCF) at constant amplitude (R= 0.1). A non-destructive inspection technique was applied for surface crack detection based on the frequency change monitored during the tests. Surface and near surface macro residual stresses on QST rebars were determined by X-ray diffraction and Cut Compliance techniques. Surface imperfections and roughness were identified with Scanning Electron Microscopy mainly near the ribs. A parametric study of the rebar geometry, using 3D Finite Element Models, allowed to determine the influence of rib inclination and rebar diameter on the stress concentration factors. A short crack growth model was developed to study the scatter resulting from the interaction between short crack and microstructural barriers. The model includes dispersion of grain orientation ratio, grain size variation and different phases (ferrite-pearlite and martensite). This model was then model to include the surface roughness effects and long crack propagation. The stress concentration factor was considered as a constant parameter. The model predicted the fatigue behaviour of HR-CW and QST rebars.

Composite action of FRP bridge decks adhesively bonded to steel main girders

Up until today reinforced concrete has been used in most cases for the manufacturing of bridge decks. Depending on the quality of the work carried out, defects can already occur after only a few years. These defects mostly appear in the form of corrosion of the steel reinforcement due to concrete's sensitivity to de-icing salts and water. To reduce maintenance costs, which are mainly caused by corrosion of the steel reinforcement, attempts were made to eliminate the steel reinforcement in the bridge deck. This was achieved for example by replacing the whole concrete bridge deck with an FRP1 bridge deck. FRP bridge decks, besides the advantage of the absence of steel reinforcement, exhibit the advantage of a low dead load (approx. 20% of a comparable concrete deck) combined with high strength. These properties resulted in the fact that today more than 200 bridges with FRP decks are in service worldwide. Most of them need steel or concrete main girders to bridge the required span. Despite the many bridges already in service, assessment of their load-bearing capacity or deflections still remains difficult. Some of the reasons for this this are as follows: Geometry and material properties vary considerably between different FRP bridge-deck types. The problem of the connection between main girders and bridge decks has only been partially solved. No design method exists which allows determination of the stresses and deflections of composite girders, and takes the degree of composite action of the bridge deck into account. This thesis contributes to solve these problems. Experiments with two different bridge decks were carried out in order to determine the necessary system properties (in-plane compression and shear resistance and in-plane compression and shear stiffness) for the calculation of the load-bearing behavior of steel/FRP composite girders. The method developed to determine the system properties can also be applied to other FRP bridge decks (e.g. sandwich decks). In a second step, four composite girders (two with each bridge deck) were manufactured by bonding the bridge decks onto conventional steel girders. Local failure of the bridge deck, as occurs in girders with stud or bolt connections, is therefore prevented and a clear load transfer in the joint is assured. One of the two girders, with each bridge deck system, was tested statically and the other statically and under fatigue loads. The results of the girder experiments showed that adhesive bonding is a reliable connection technique, since failure always occurred first in the bridge deck and then in the adhesive layer. The stiffness and failure load of the composite girders could be increased considerably in comparison with the pure steel girder. The determined system properties concerning in-plane shear and compression stiffness were confirmed with the girder experiments. The results of the experiments with the composite girders were compared with results of an analytical design method for concrete/wood girders adapted for steel/FRP composite girders. It was shown that the load-bearing behavior of composite girders consisting of steel main girders and adhesively- bonded FRP bridge decks can be determined with good accuracy in the linear-elastic region. Furthermore a design method was developed which allows the loadbearing capacity of the steel/FRP composite girders investigated in this thesis to be determined with very good accuracy. Subsequently a parameter study was carried out in order to verify the assumption of full composite action in the adhesively- bonded joint. This is one of the requirements for application of the developed design methods. Reinforced concrete bridges under increased railway traffic loads

The aim of this thesis is to provide rational engineering methods for the fatigue safety examination of existing railway bridges. Increasing railway traffic loading and enhanced structural analysis allow for higher exploitation of the capacity of bridge elements. This implies that increasing action effects due to higher service loads may become fatigue relevant in the future. The application of the results allows for more precise fatigue examinations. As beneficial consequence, most railway bridges may be operated safely in the future without costly strengthening measures. Calculated stress ranges in the reinforcement that governs the fatigue resistance of structural elements are too high when using conventional resistance models. The load carrying contribution of non-structural elements and a not entirely developed crack pattern lead to fatigue relevant reduction of the stress range in the rebars. A theoretical study shows that reductions of 5 – 15 % may be obtained by considering the composite effect of the continuous rail grid. Measurements of the dynamic traffic effects were conducted on a single-track bridge. The effects of passenger and freight trains at different velocities on the structural response were measured. The results are interpreted based on the observed vertical shape of the railway track. The observed dynamic behaviour could be correctly represented by simulations using simple dynamic models. The effect of other velocities and in-creased carriage loading degrees are investigated in a parametric study. The findings of previous investigations for road bridges and the investigations of this research work for railway bridges show that the Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF) decreases for increasing loadings. Thus, smaller DAFs are applied for fatigue relevant causing heavy vehicles. Fatigue stress ranges may be reduced by supplementary 3 – 6 %. A method based on Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics theory is presented for fatigue life determination. Fatigue life typically is very sensitive to different calculation parameters, rendering the calculation of a reliable fatigue life difficult. The refined analysis of fatigue tests reported in literature allows better understanding of the fatigue behaviour of bridge elements. Thus, a fatigue safety concept is established that compensates the inconvenience of the high sensitivity of fatigue life calculations. This fatigue safety concept is based on the observed load carrying behaviour of inspected bridge elements. The specific fatigue behaviour with visible signs allows for the examination of fatigue safety in a pragmatic way. Specific inspection of bridge elements becomes pertinent as soon as general examinations exhibit an insufficient fatigue resistance. Fatigue behaviour of Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concretes (UHPFRC) is characterised by increasing deformations during cyclic tensile loading. Under a maximum tensile stress level of 4 MPa the deformation of the UHPFRC layer becomes stable during cyclic loading. For slightly higher stresses, the deformation increases and the UHPFRC layer fails due to steel fibre pull out. Application of the UHPFRC layer in the flexural tension zone considerably reduces the fatigue stresses in the steel reinforcement. As the UHPFRC layer deforms, the stress range in the reinforcement is effectively and permanently reduced and may remain below the nominal fatigue limit. For design of members with a layer of UHPFRC for waterproofing and fatigue strengthening, the maximum allowed strain for stable behaviour under tensile fatigue loading should be verified.
