SCCER-FURIES - A decision support tool for the geo-localised design and assessment of the integration of multi-carrier/multi-services/multi-grids innovative energy conversion systems in urban systems and industrial clusters - Deliverable 1.5.4

The computing platform (OSMOSELua) has been developed in the Industrial Process and Energy Systems Engineering group IPESE at EPFL as a flexible and robust tool for the design of complex integrated energy systems. The decision tool has been developed using the script language Lua, to help decision making for the design and operation of various systems (energy, supply chains, industrial processes etc.). A research tool in essence, it also aims at capitalizing the knowledge acquired and methods developed by the research group. OsmoseLua can handle GIS data based on a generic object‐oriented model of each urban energy system component type (buildings, utilities and networks). Multi‐carrier/multi‐services/multigrids layers are treated using energy flows such as fuel or electricity associated to unit process. A multi‐period description allows to characterize the main stages of the urban architectural morphing bringing the long term vision needed to perform the coordinated planning of multienergy networks.

Design optimization of distributed energy systems has become an interest of a wider group of researchers due the capability of these systems to integrate non-dispatchable renewable energy technologies such as solar PV and wind. White box models, using linear and mixed integer linear programing techniques, are often used in their design. However, the increased complexity of energy flow (especially due to cyber-physical interactions) and uncertainties challenge the application of white box models. This is where data driven methodologies become effective, as they demonstrate higher flexibility to adapt to different environments, which enables their use for energy planning at regional and national scale. This study introduces a data driven approach based on reinforcement learning to design distributed energy systems. Two different neural network architectures are used in this work, i.e. a fully connected neural network and a convolutional neural network (CNN). The novel approach introduced is benchmarked using a grey box model based on fuzzy logic. The grey box model showed a better performance when optimizing simplified energy systems, however it fails to handle complex energy flows within the energy system. Reinforcement learning based on fully connected architecture outperformed the grey box model by improving the objective function values by 60%. Reinforcement learning based on CNN improved the objective function values further (by up to 20% when compared to a fully connected architecture). The results reveal that data-driven models are capable to conduct design optimization of complex energy systems. This opens a new pathway in designing distributed energy systems.

A Methodology for Thermo-Economic Modeling and Optimization of SOFC Systems

Fuel cell systems integrate the fuel cell technology with fuel processing and post processing. A thermo-economic optimization method has been developed to systematically generate the most attractive configurations of the integrated system. In the developed methodology, the energy flows are computed using conventional process simulation software. The system is integrated using the pinch based methods that rely on optimization techniques. This defines the minimum of energy required and sets the basis to design the ideal heat exchanger network. A thermo-economic method is then used to compute the integrated system performances, sizes and costs. This allows performing the optimization of the system with regard to two objectives: minimize the specific cost and maximize the efficiency. The multi-objective optimization strategy identifies interesting system configurations and their performance. This method will be used as a support for decision makers when designing a new system. In this paper, the methodology is applied to study the integration of a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell system.

Sensitivity of the dispatch strategy in designing grid integrated hybrid energy systems

Integrating renewable energy technologies based on solar PV (SPV) and wind energy in the energy system is challenging due to time dependence of the energy potential for these energy sources. Grid integrated hybrid energy systems combining SPV panels, wind turbines, battery bank and internal combustion generators (ICG) can be used in this regard specially for distributed generation. Energy-economic dispatch strategy plays a vital role in managing the energy flow of the system. However, it is difficult to design such energy system due to complexity of the energy flow because of the changes in electricity demand, solar and wind energy potential. This study evaluates the sensitivity of dispatch strategy on optimum system configuration considering Levelized Energy Cost (LEC) and Grid Integration Level (GI). Two existing dispatch strategies i.e. cycle charging (CC) and modified cycle charging (MCC) dispatch strategies are used for the analysis based on Pareto multi objective optimization of LEC and GI. Pareto-fronts obtained considering both approaches were subsequently compared for different grid curtailments. The results show that a notable difference in LEC and system configuration is observed for two different approaches with the increase of grid interactions.
