Zero-dimensional hybrid iodobismuthate derivatives: from structure study to photovoltaic application

The quest for lead-free light-absorbing perovskite materials has long been the target of researchers to make the 'star' material friendly to the commercial market. After a summary of different lead-free solar absorbers, we demonstrate a zero-dimensional iodobismuthate (MA)(3)[BiI6]center dot 3MACl (MA: CH3NH3) featuring isolated hexaiodobismuthate(III) anions in the crystal analysis. The unexpectedly formed material was made via an orthogonal solvent permeation method and the decomposition of the guest solvent. We compare the BiI63- containing compound with a series of more common iodobismuthates, especially the dinuclear Bi2I93- in terms of dimensionalities via single-crystal diffraction and DFT calculations, respectively. An undocumented second-order phase transition was found between 190 K and 160 K for the dimeric MA(3)Bi(2)I(9). The photovoltaic device from a thermally reorganized polycrystalline film of (MA)(3)[BiI6]center dot 3MACl, which resembled the structure of (MA)(3)[Bi2I9] gave a power conversion efficiency of 1.09%.

Nanoscale Phase Segregation in Supramolecular π-Templating for Hybrid Perovskite Photovoltaics from NMR Crystallography

The use of layered perovskites is an important strategy to improve the stability of hybrid perovskite materials and their optoelectronic devices. However, tailoring their properties requires accurate structure determination at the atomic scale, which is a challenge for conventional diffraction-based techniques. We demonstrate the use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) crystallography in determining the structure of layered hybrid perovskites for a mixed-spacer model composed of 2-phenylethylammonium (PEA+) and 2-(perfluorophenyl)ethylammonium (FEA+) moieties, revealing nanoscale phase segregation. Moreover, we illustrate the application of this structure in perovskite solar cells with power conversion efficiencies that exceed 21%, accompanied by enhanced operational stability.

High performance solid-state mesoscopic solar cells

Mesoscopic sensitized solar cells are one of the most promising third-generation photovoltaic technologies. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), imitating the photosynthesis of green plants, were the first photovoltaic devices to utilize a mesoscopic heterojunction for the conversion of solar irradiation into electrical power. Solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (ssDSCs), that employ an organic hole-transporting material in place of a liquid redox electrolyte, have evolved as viable contenders to conventional liquid DSCs. A typical ssDSC is composed of a mesostructured wide-bandgap metal oxide semiconductor that is sensitized with a light-absorbing chromophore and infiltrated with a molecular organic hole-transporter, usually by solution-processing. In this device, photoexcitation of the sensitizer and subsequent ultrafast electron injection into the conduction band of the metal oxide semiconductor is followed by hole transfer from the oxidized sensitizer to the organic hole-transporter. Charge transport of both the electron and the hole through the two bicontinuous phases, followed by charge migration through the external circuit, completes the photovoltaic operation of the cell. Despite more than 15 years of development, ssDSCs have always been lagging behind their liquid counterparts in terms of both power conversion efficiency and long-term stability. My thesis presents three different approaches that are aimed at contributing to the development of high-performance solid-state mesoscopic solar cells. Firstly, I present a new class of Co(III) complexes as solution-processable p-type dopants for triarylamine-based hole-conductors such as the commonly employed 2,2’,7,7’-tetrakis-N,N-di-para-methoxyphenylamine-9,9’-spirobifluorene (spiro-MeOTAD). The proposed Co(III) complexes were characterized in detail using optical and electrochemical techniques. The application of the new p-dopants in ssDSC rendered it possible to directly relate the conductivity of the doped hole-transporter to the photovoltaic performance of the devices. The work shows that chemical p-doping is a powerful tool to control the charge transport properties of spiro-MeOTAD in ssDSCs, capable of replacing the commonly employed photo-doping, i.e. the light-assisted one-electron oxidation of spiro-MeOTAD by ambient oxygen. Combining this strategy with a state–of–the–art organic D–π–A sensitizer allowed us to achieve power conversion efficiencies of up to 7.2%—a new record for this kind of device architecture. Secondly, I investigated a series of new molecular hole-transporters based on the triarylamine-substituted 9,9’-spirobifluorene core. In total, we synthesized seven new materials and characterized them in detail using electrical and electrochemical techniques. Organic-field effect transistors were fabricated employing these materials in order to evaluate their hole mobilities. From the comparison of different substituents on the hole-conducting triarylamine moieties, a structure–property relationship was derived, highlighting the importance of processability and hole mobility of the hole-transporting material for an efficient application in a ssDSC configuration. We encountered the purity of the new materials as a key parameter for a proper functioning of the device and identified the use of functionalized metal-scavenging polystyrene beads as a valuable purification step. Thirdly, a new technique is introduced that allows to realize functional composites of a mesoporous metal oxide and the organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite CH3NH3PbI3. CH3NH3PbI3 has recently attracted great attention as a light-harvesting pigment in mesoscopic solar cells. We propose a two-step technique to deposit the perovskite absorber: PbI2 is first applied on a substrate by solution-processing and subsequently exposed to a solution of CH3NH3I. It was evidenced that the desired hybrid perovskite forms within seconds after contacting the two precursors. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to elucidate the changes in crystal morphology during the transformation reaction. The kinetics of the reaction was investigated in detail using X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy. Employing the two-step technique for the fabrication of mesoscopic perovskite-based solar cells enabled new record power conversion efficiencies of up to 15%. By following three different strategies, this thesis could contribute significantly to the development of high-performance solid-state mesoscopic solar cells. The power conversion efficiencies of 7.2% and 15%, achieved with a molecular dye and an organic–inorganic perovskite pigment, respectively, represent important milestones for the design of third-generation photovoltaic cells that hopefully one day can compete with the conventional silicon-based solar cell technology.

Spatial and Morphological Control of Cyanine Dye Thin Films

Cyanine dyes are organic semiconductor compounds with light absorption and emission properties useful for emerging technologies such as solar cells and light-emitting devices. The characteristics of these materials in the solid state depend on their organization of the constituting building blocks. This thesis focuses on controlling the morphology of cyanine dye thin films at different length scales and clarifying the resulting properties. When microstructures present features whose size matches visible light wavelengths, new properties may arise from light-matter interactions. Here the properties resulting from the light-matter interactions of cyanine droplet films cast from solution are studied. Based on experimental evidence, it is shown that dye droplet ensembles scatter light with different efficiencies and wavelength ranges depending on their dimensions. FDTD simulations are used to show that this effect results fromscattering enhancement at the absorption edge of the dye where the refractive index varies considerably. Simulations also provide a better understanding of individual dropletsâ interaction with light. While earlier work had hypothesized that the observed scattering phenomenon were due to crystalline clusters within the droplets, this work highlights the contribution of the dye filmmorphology. Cyanines also form single crystals whose fabrication induces molecular-scale order in the material. Previous work demonstrated that thin single crystals could be grown by solvent vapor annealing of dye droplets. Here it is shown that in uncontrolled conditions, cyanine single crystals destabilize to formdendritic crystals. In-situ microscopy observations highlight the solute reservoir role of the droplet distribution surrounding a growing crystal; when the distance between droplets and the crystal front is large, the solute supply is diffusion-limited. Moreover variations in local pressure equilibrium between the droplets and crystal front lead to advection fluxes which perturb the crystal growth. These observations help design configurations to either prevent crystal destabilization or take advantage of the dendritic growth in a controlled manner. In addition, the patterning of crystals on a substrate is relevant for their application in devices. A practical challenge is to induce single crystal growth at specific locations. Here, surfaces patterned with SAMs of hydrophilic and hydrophobic thiols are used to create dye droplet arrays from which crystals can be grown. This method is shown to yield local crystallization of the dye and to prevent crystal destabilization through better control of the droplet distribution. By varying the dye solution concentration, partial control over crystal density is achieved, however it proved difficult to control the number of nuclei per droplet. A more controlled evaporation and solvent vapor annealing system might be necessary to master the nucleation process. Finally the structure and optical properties of cyanine single crystals are addressed. The crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction. Structural aspects are shown to lead to excitonic couplings, which are evidenced by orientation-dependent spectroscopic measurements of single crystals. Although further investigation of the absorption band structure is necessary, the results are promising for photovoltaic devices as they might improve exciton transport compared to amorphous layers.
