MORPHIC: Programmable photonic circuits enabled by silicon photonic MEMS

In the European project MORPHIC we develop a platform for programmable silicon photonic circuits enabled by waveguide-integrated micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). MEMS can add compact, and low-power phase shifters and couplers to an established silicon photonics platform with high-speed modulators and detectors. This MEMS technology is used for a new class of programmable photonic circuits, that can be reconfigured using electronics and software, consisting of large interconnected meshes of phase shifters and couplers. MORPHIC is also developing the packaging and driver electronics interfacing schemes for such large circuits, creating a supply chain for rapid prototyping new photonic chip concepts. These will be demonstrated in different applications, such as switching, beamforming and microwave photonics.

Integration of MEMS in Silicon Photonics

Like integrated electronics, integrated photonics such as Silicon Photonics benefit from increased device-density on a single chip. Silicon is an excellent material for integrated photonics because its high refractive index allows devices to be made small, and the established silicon CMOS fabrication infrastructure provides a convenient route towards scaling up production. However, standard Silicon Photonics faces a bottleneck in scaling up device-density due to excessive power consumption and high optical losses associated with individual devices. Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) provide a unique solution to this problem by providing a physical redistribution of optical media to perform the necessary active functions in photonic integrated circuits (PICs) with minimal power consumption and low loss.This thesis tackles two important aspects needed for implementing large-scale MEMS-enabled PICs in silicon. First, the required microfabrication processes are developed for the first-time, by full process integration of MEMS in an established foundry platform, the Interuniversity Microelectronic Centre's (IMEC) iSiPP50G Silicon Photonics technology. By demonstrating MEMS-compatibility, the barrier to adopting this new technology is reduced, and the devices and circuits themselves benefit from co-integration with high-performance standard components. Second, a new class of electrostatic MEMS-enabled photonic building blocks are designed, simulated, and experimentally characterized. Demonstrated devices include a set of remarkably broadband (bandwidth > 80 nm) tunable couplers capable of continuous optical power tuning between output ports to produce extinction ratios greater than 20 dB with minimal insertion loss (reaching < 0.4 dB). In terms of switching, a very low-voltage, six-port count device and a particularly compact (65 um x 62 um) photonic MEMS switch with sub-microsecond switching time are also presented. Further MEMS-enabled functionality is demonstrated with a wavelength-selective add-drop filter and a discussion of phase-shifters and multi-device sub-circuits. These components can be repeated and combined with one another to create complex and reconfigurable networks, and therefore represent an essential stepping stone towards the realization of very large-scale PICs. Together, these key developments in microfabrication and device design promise PIC designers MEMS-enabled photonic components as standard elements in their circuits to efficiently implement functions such as switching, tuning, and filtering for application in photonic switch matrices, weighted interconnects for neural networks, and programmable PICs.

Low-noise frequency-agile photonic integrated lasers for coherent ranging

Stable and tunable integrated lasers are fundamental building blocks for applications from spectroscopy to imaging and communication. Here the authors present a narrow linewidth hybrid photonic integrated laser with low frequency noise and fast linear wavelength tuning. They then provide an efficient FMCW LIDAR demonstration. Frequency modulated continuous wave laser ranging (FMCW LiDAR) enables distance mapping with simultaneous position and velocity information, is immune to stray light, can achieve long range, operate in the eye-safe region of 1550 nm and achieve high sensitivity. Despite its advantages, it is compounded by the simultaneous requirement of both narrow linewidth low noise lasers that can be precisely chirped. While integrated silicon-based lasers, compatible with wafer scale manufacturing in large volumes at low cost, have experienced major advances and are now employed on a commercial scale in data centers, and impressive progress has led to integrated lasers with (ultra) narrow sub-100 Hz-level intrinsic linewidth based on optical feedback from photonic circuits, these lasers presently lack fast nonthermal tuning, i.e. frequency agility as required for coherent ranging. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid photonic integrated laser that exhibits very narrow intrinsic linewidth of 25 Hz while offering linear, hysteresis-free, and mode-hop-free-tuning beyond 1 GHz with up to megahertz actuation bandwidth constituting 1.6 x 10(15) Hz/s tuning speed. Our approach uses foundry-based technologies - ultralow-loss (1 dB/m) Si3N4 photonic microresonators, combined with aluminium nitride (AlN) or lead zirconium titanate (PZT) microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based stress-optic actuation. Electrically driven low-phase-noise lasing is attained by self-injection locking of an Indium Phosphide (InP) laser chip and only limited by fundamental thermo-refractive noise at mid-range offsets. By utilizing difference-drive and apodization of the photonic chip to suppress mechanical vibrations of the chip, a flat actuation response up to 10 MHz is achieved. We leverage this capability to demonstrate a compact coherent LiDAR engine that can generate up to 800 kHz FMCW triangular optical chirp signals, requiring neither any active linearization nor predistortion compensation, and perform a 10 m optical ranging experiment, with a resolution of 12.5 cm. Our results constitute a photonic integrated laser system for scenarios where high compactness, fast frequency actuation, and high spectral purity are required.

Ultra-wide-band structural slow light

The ability of using integrated photonics to scale multiple optical components on a single monolithic chip offers key advantages to create miniature light-controlling chips. Numerous scaled optical components have been already demonstrated. However, present integrated photonic circuits are still rudimentary compared to the complexity of today's electronic circuits. Slow light propagation in nanostructured materials is a key component for realizing chip-integrated photonic devices controlling the relative phase of light and enhancing optical nonlinearities. We present an experimental record high group-index-bandwidth product (GBP) of 0.47 over a 17.7 nm bandwidth in genetically optimized coupled-cavity-waveguides (CCWs) formed by L3 photonic crystal cavities. Our structures were realized in silicon-on-insulator slabs integrating up to 800 coupled cavities, and characterized by transmission, Fourier-space imaging of mode dispersion, and Mach-Zehnder interferometry.
