Finite-size criteria for spectral gaps in š·-dimensional quantum spin systems

Abstract

We generalize the existing finite-size criteria for spectral gaps offrustration-free spin systems to D>2 dimensions. We obtain a local gapthreshold of 3/n, independent of D, for nearest-neighbor interactions. The 1/n scaling persists for arbitrary finite-range interactions in Z3. The key observation is that there is more flexibility in Knabeā€™s combinatorial approach if one employs the operator Cauchy-Schwarz inequality.

Finite-difference time-domain method
'Finite-difference time-domain' (FDTD) or Yee's method (named after the Chinese American applied mathematician Kane S. Yee, born 1934) is a numerical analysis technique used for modeling computational electrodynamics (finding approximate solutions to the associated system of differential equations). Since it is a time-domain method, FDTD solutions can cover a wide frequency range with a single simulation run, and treat nonlinear material properties in a natural way.
Spin (physics)
Spin is an intrinsic form of angular momentum carried by elementary particles, and thus by composite particles such as hadrons, atomic nuclei, and atoms. Spin should not be understood as in the "rotating internal mass" sense: spin is a quantized wave property. The existence of electron spin angular momentum is inferred from experiments, such as the Sternā€“Gerlach experiment, in which silver atoms were observed to possess two possible discrete angular momenta despite having no orbital angular momentum.
Computational electromagnetics
Computational electromagnetics (CEM), computational electrodynamics or electromagnetic modeling is the process of modeling the interaction of electromagnetic fields with physical objects and the environment. It typically involves using computer programs to compute approximate solutions to Maxwell's equations to calculate antenna performance, electromagnetic compatibility, radar cross section and electromagnetic wave propagation when not in free space.
