Hidden bulk and surface effects in the spin polarization of the nodal-line semimetal ZrSiTe

Local inversion symmetry breaking in centrosymmetric materials can lead to large spin polarization of the electronic band structure in separate sectors of the unit cell. Here, the authors reveal such hidden spin polarisation in ZrSiTe using spin and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy in combination with ab initio band structure calculations and investigate the resultant spin polarised bulk and surface properties In non-magnetic materials the combination of inversion symmetry breaking (ISB) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) determines the spin polarization of the band structure. However, a local spin polarization can also arise in centrosymmetric crystals containing ISB subunits. This is namely the case for the nodal-line semimetal ZrSiTe where, by combining spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with ab initio band structure calculations, we reveal a complex spin polarization. In the bulk, the valence and conduction bands exhibit opposite spin orientations in two spatially separated two-dimensional ZrTe sectors within the unit cell, yielding no net polarization. We also observe spin-polarized surface states that are well separated in energy and momentum from the bulk bands. A layer-by-layer analysis of the spin polarization allows us to unveil the complex evolution of the signal in the bulk states near the surface, thus bringing the intertwined nature of surface and bulk effects to the fore.

Spectroscopic Studies on Semiconducting Interfaces with Giant Spin Splitting

The application of an external magnetic field can lift the spin degeneracy of electronic states through its interaction with the electronic magnetic moment. A closely-related phenomenon is the Rashba-Bychkov (RB) effect where symmetry breaking at surfaces or interfaces gives rise to an electric field which is in turn seen as an effective magnetic field in the electrons' rest frame. The resulting k-dependent energy splitting of spin-polarized electronic states has been observed on various metal surfaces but the effect is much larger in artificially-grown surface alloys; such as the BiAg2 grown at the surface of Ag(111). The spin splitting magnitude observed in these systems might be very useful in spintronics applications since it could decrease the spin precession time in a spin transistor and distinguish between the extrinsic and intrinsic spin Hall effects. Nevertheless, their metallic character poses serious obstacles in the exploitation of the RB effect due to the presence of spin-degenerate electronic states at the Fermi level which would dominate transport experiments. We have used angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) to explore the RB effects on various artificially grown structures, formed on semiconducting substrates. The interplay of quantum confinement and giant RB splitting on a trilayer Si(111)-Ag-BiAg2 system reveals the formation of a complex spin-dependent structure, which can be externally tuned by varying the Ag layer thickness. This provides a means to tailor the electronic structure and spin polarization near the Fermi level, with potential applications on Si-compatible spintronic devices. Moreover, we have discovered a giant spin splitting in a true semiconducting system, namely the Si(111)-Bi trimer phase. The size of the RB parameters is comparable to those of metallic surface alloys. Using theoretical models we have identified the peculiar band topology as the origin of the giant spin splitting on the Bi/Si(111) system. All our findings are supported by relativistic first-principles calculations. Finally, a chapter of this thesis manuscript is devoted to the description of phenomeno-logical theoretical simulation, which can capture the experimental results related to the RB effect on low-dimensional systems. A parallel experimental project is discussed in a separate chapter. It has been focused on the band topology of the novel p(2 × 2) reconstruction of the Pt(111)-Ag-Bi trilayer. We investigated the symmetry properties of the interface states by varying the amount of Ag. ARPES results present the electronic signature of a strain-related structural transition.

Electronic structure of an ordered Pb/Ag(111) surface alloy: Theory and experiment

We have studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) the band structure of the ordered surface alloy obtained by the deposition of 0.33 monolayers of Pb on the Ag(111) surface. We observe several dispersing features which are well described as Pb-Ag hybrid bands by a band structure calculation performed within the generalized gradient approximation of density functional theory. We also find that a band of mixed Pb p(z) and Ag s character is split in momentum space. We interpret this splitting as the combined result of spin-orbit interaction and broken inversion symmetry at the surface.

Quantum interference effects of out-of-plane confinement on two-dimensional electron systems in oxides

It was recently discovered that a conductive, metallic state is formed on the surface of some insulating oxides. First observed on SrTiO3 (001), it was then found in other compounds as diverse as anatase TiO2, KTaO3, BaTiO3, ZnO, and also on different surfaces of SrTiO3 (or other oxides) with different symmetries. The spatial extension of the wave function of this electronic state is of only a few atomic layers. Experiments indicate its existence is related to the presence of oxygen vacancies induced at or near the surface of the oxide. We present a simplified model aimed at describing the effect of its small spatial extension on measurements of its threedimensional (3D) electronic structure by angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy. For the sake of clarity, we base our discussion on a simple tight-binding scheme plus a confining potential that is assumed to be induced by the oxygen vacancies. Our model parameters are, nevertheless, obtained from density functional calculations. With this methodology, we can explain, from a very simple concept of selective interference, the "wobbling," i.e., the photoemission intensity modulation and/or apparent dispersion of the Fermi surface and spectra along the out-of-plane (k(z)) direction, and the "mixed 2D/3D" characteristics observed in some experiments. We conclude that the critical model parameters for such an effect are the relative strength of the electronic hopping of each band and the height/width aspect ratio of the surface confining potential. By considering recent photoemission measurements, in light of our findings, we can get relevant information on the electronic wave functions and the nature of the confining potential.
