Machines for Materials and Materials for Machines: Metal-Insulator Transitions and Artificial Intelligence

In this perspective, we discuss the current and future impact of artificial intelligence and machine learning for the purposes of better understanding phase transitions, particularly in correlated electron materials. We take as a model system the rare-earth nickelates, famous for their thermally-driven metal-insulator transition, and describe various complementary approaches in which machine learning can contribute to the scientific process. In particular, we focus on electron microscopy as a bottom-up approach and metascale statistical analyses of classes of metal-insulator transition materials as a bottom-down approach. Finally, we outline how this improved understanding will lead to better control of phase transitions and present as an example the implementation of rare-earth nickelates in resistive switching devices. These devices could see a future as part of a neuromorphic computing architecture, providing a more efficient platform for neural network analyses - a key area of machine learning.

Preparation and properties of KNbO3-based piezoelectric ceramics

During the last several years, new lead-free piezoelectric materials have been developed to replace the lead-based materials, such as PZT. Presently, the family of lead-free ceramics showing the most promising piezoelectric properties is based on potassium sodium niobate (KNN). The KNN ceramics have been investigated since 1960s, but many problems arise, especially during the synthesis. Potassium and sodium based powders are moisture sensitive leading often to disintegration of samples after sintering and to moisture dependent properties. Another drawback is the poor densification during sintering. Elaborated procedures (hot pressing, special handling of powders) are needed to produce high quality KNN ceramics in a reproducible way, and their properties are inferior to those of PZT. Li, Ta and Sb modified KNN, however, were reported in 2004 to exhibit properties comparable to those of PZT. These modified compositions promise to be a new generation of environmentally safer piezoelectric materials. The goals of this thesis are to prepare selected compositions within this family and examine their properties relevant for applications in medical transducer. The emphasis of the work is on piezoelectric properties and their stability with respect to the temperature, humidity, and preparation conditions. The unmodified, and lithium (K, Na, Li)NbO3 and the lithium with tantalum modified KNN ceramics, (K, Na, Li)(Nb, Ta)O3 have been produced by the conventional solid state synthesis. The conventional processing steps have been adapted with a goal to obtain reproducible high quality samples without using complex techniques such as hot pressing or special powder handling. In particular, the particle grain size and particle size distribution have been controlled for all the steps; this control starts with the initial powders. To reduce the particle sizes the most efficient milling method has been found to be attrition milling. Another important point is the compositional homogeneity. To improve this homogeneity, a second calcination step has been added to the process. Finally, the sintering step is sensitive, the sintering temperature range in these compositions is as narrow as 5 °C and in some cases, the dwell time is reduced to minimum (several minutes) to avoid grain growth. The densities of the so-obtained ceramics are higher than 95%, but some compositional inhomogeneities have been observed in electron microscopy. The electromechanical properties at room temperature are promising for example d33 = 240 [pm/V], kt = 51%, kp = 45% with ε = 919 [-] and tanδ = 2.6% for ceramics modified with 7 at% lithium, and d33 = 310 [pm/V], kt = 46%, kp = 46% with ε = 829 [-] and tanδ = 2.4% for ceramics modified with 3 at% lithium and 20 at% tantalum. These properties are especially enhanced for compositions with the orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition close to room temperature. Dielectric and piezoelectric (resonance, converse and direct) measurements as a function of temperature have demonstrated that the orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition is strongly dependent on temperature unlike in PZT, where it is controlled primarily by the composition. The thermal behaviour of ceramics is thus influenced by the presence of the phase transition in the analysed temperature range. The thermal stability has been analysed in the perspective of medical transducers, which are subjected to sterilisation cycles up to 140 °C. A depolarisation after the first cycle has been observed for all the compositions, the smallest being for the lithium and tantalum modified KNN ceramics. After the second cycle, the properties stabilise, being the best for the compositions (K0.465Na0.465Li0.07)NbO3 and (K0.485Na0.485Li0.03)(Nb0.80Ta0.20)O3. As the enhanced piezoelectric properties of these materials are related to the presence of a phase transition, the determination of the contributions of the domain walls in either phase is then of practical importance. The intrinsic and extrinsic contributions of the piezoelectric response can be separated by analysing the piezoelectric response as a function of the applied stress (direct measurements). It has then been shown that the intrinsic contribution is always higher than the irreversible domain wall motion contribution. This latter contribution is nevertheless higher in the orthorhombic phase than in the tetragonal phase. Finally, as the potassium niobate based ceramics have shown in the past their moisture sensitivity, aging measurements have been done in different atmospheres. Surprisingly, the properties of the modified KNN ceramics studied are not found to be dependent on the moisture and only small aging has been noticed. After 100 days, the (K0.485Na0.485Li0.03)(Nb0.80Ta0.20)O3 ceramics show a decrease of the electromechanical properties below 10% and the coupling coefficient are almost stable with time. With these electromechanical properties and their time/thermal stabilities the modified KNN ceramics are promising substitutes to lead-based materials, in particular the lithium and tantalum modified ceramics.

Finite element modeling and experimental study of brittle fracture in tempered martensitic steels for thermonuclear fusion applications

In this work we have studied brittle fracture in high-chromium reduced activation tempered martensitic steels foreseen as structural materials for thermonuclear fusion reactors. Developing the adequate materials that can withstand the severe irradiation conditions of the burning plasma in a future fusion reactor is one of the major challenges to be solved in order to make profit from the great advantages of thermonuclear fusion as an energy source. High-chromium tempered martensitic steels such as F82H and the most advanced version Eurofer97 are among the main candidate materials for structural applications in future fusion power plants due to low irradiation-induced swelling, good mechanical and thermal properties, and reasonably fast radioactive decay. The most concerning drawback of these kind of steels is irradiation embrittlement, which is manifested by a ductile-to-brittle transition temperature shift to higher temperatures after irradiation whose amplitude depends on the irradiation conditions (temperature, neutron flux, neutron fluence, etc). The aim of this work was to study and model brittle fracture in the ductile-brittle transition region of this kind of steels in the as-received unirradiated conditions. It is necessary to be able to transfer laboratory specimen fracture data to real components and structures in order to assess the performance of these steels in the different operating and transient conditions they could find during the operation life of a fusion reactor. In order to do so, the specimen geometry effects and specimen size effects on measured fracture toughness need to be properly understood, taken into account and predicted with an appropriate model. In particular, specimen size effect on measured toughness is a major concern for the nuclear materials research community owing to the limited irradiation volume in current and planed materials irradiation facilities. The main results of this PhD work are summarized below. The microstructure of Eurofer97 and F82H has been characterized and compared by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy in order to identify microstructural features that could play a role in the measured fracture toughness. Both steels have similar but slightly different chemical composition and final heat-treatments but the prior austenitic grain size measured in F82H is approximately 8 times larger than in Eurofer97. It was shown that the alloying element Tantalum, added to stabilize the austenite grain size, played a different role in both steels. After a careful analysis of the particles present in both steels, it was found that Tantalum in Eurofer97 formed carbides of an average size around 100 nanometers. In contrast in F82H it did not form small carbides but formed big oxide inclusions with a size up to 30 µm. These large particles do not effectively pin the grain boundaries. The different behavior of Tantalum in these steels is believed to be mainly a consequence of the larger content of Oxygen present and the smaller amount of Aluminum in F82H compared to Eurofer97. The Master-Curve ASTM-E1921 standard is a method initially developed to determine the ductile-to-brittle transition reference temperature, T0, in fission reactor ferritic steels from a small number of experiments. In this work the applicability of the Master-Curve method to reduced activation tempered martensitic steels such as Eurofer97 and F82H was studied in detail. Fracture tests with pre-cracked sub-sized compact tension specimens (three different sizes, 0.18T, 0.35T and 0.87T of Eurofer97) were carried out in the temperature range [-196 °C, -40 °C]. The toughness-temperature behavior and scatter were shown to deviate from the ASTM-E1921 standard predictions near the lower shelf. Using the method of maximum likelihood, the athermal component of the Master-Curve was calculated to better fit our fracture toughness data from the lower to the middle transition region. We showed that these Master-Curve adjustments are necessary to make the T0 values obtained near the lower shelf with 0.35T size C(T) specimens consistent with those obtained in the middle transition region with 0.87T C(T) specimens. The ASTM-E1921 specimen size limitations, setting the maximum toughness measurable with a given specimen size, were found to be too lenient for this kind of steels. This problem was especially evident in fracture toughness data of Eurofer97 and F82H obtained in the upper transition temperature range with two different specimen sizes. Thus a more stringent specimen size requirement was proposed to avoid inconsistent transition temperature determinations. A promising local fracture model with the potential of predicting cleavage fracture toughness was studied. Finite element simulations were undertaken for compact specimens, notched specimens and tensile specimens of Eurofer97 steel tested from 20 °C down to -197 °C. Three and two dimensional as well as axisymmetric simulations were run in order to calculate the stress and strain fields at the onset of brittle fracture. For each tested temperature, the calculated load-displacement curves were found to reproduce very well those of the experiments. A local approach fracture criterion was studied. This criterion states that when the maximum principal stress is larger than a critical stress within a critical volume ahead of the crack tip, notch or neck, cleavage is triggered leading to macroscopic fracture of the specimen. It was shown that this model is able to predict the minimum fracture load of the notched specimens with the same values of critical stress and critical volume that were calibrated to predict the lower bound of fracture in compact specimens. This local approach model was also successfully used to predict the strong size effect observed experimentally in pre-cracked compact tension specimens in the upper transition region. The critical fracture stress determined in the standard tensile specimens was found higher than that of the fracture specimens. It was suggested that this difference stems from a significant difference in the stress state between the different specimens (triaxiality). Finally, the comparison between the overall fracture behavior in the transition between F82H and Eurofer97 steels indicated that these two materials are quite similar. A difference in the reference temperature T0 of about 20 °C was found, with a nominal value of -100 °C and -80 °C for F82H and Eurofer97 respectively. However, some excessive scatter in the toughness data was found in F82H with more data points than expected lying below the 1% tolerance bound; this was not observed in Eurofer97. From an engineering point of view, the entire fracture databases of these two steels are encompassed practically by the same lower tolerance bound.

Advanced analytical electron microscopy applied to Solid Oxide Cell materials and their degradation

Electron microscopy offers a wide range of techniques to study materials. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM), in particular, allows the characterisation of samples at high-temperature using a laser heating stage, and under various gaseous atmospheres leading to direct observation of the sample surface morphology dynamics in conditions that are close to those in real operating devices (i.e. at high temperature in various gases). Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) operating around 800°C in both oxidising and reducing gases, with proven co-generation efficiencies of 90%, offer very promising solutions in the ongoing energy transition. However, production costs and materials degradation in those demanding operating conditions remain significant barriers to their large-scale deployment. Studying SOFC materials' degradation through a combination of ESEM with other advanced microscopy techniques fulfilled the double aim of demonstrating the power of an ESEM and improving the understanding of SOFC materials' degradation during operation. Two materials from the SOFC stack were selected for degradation case studies at around 800°C in oxidising/reducing gases: coated ferritic steel interconnect and Ni-YSZ anode. The objectives were to explore the parameters' influence (temperature, heating ramp, pressure, gas exposure...), set the boundaries and define the guidelines of the ESEM technique while demonstrating its capabilities. The two different materials sets were selected for their relevance both for the SOFC field and for their different specific characteristics allowing a wide range of experiments to be explored. A specific method for the study of the oxidation of coated steel was developed combining ESEM, Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM). Post-test segmentation of the in-situ observed images demonstrated the possibility to obtain quantitative data. FIB sample preparation from the exact site of ESEM observation allowed to correlate the underlying microstructure with the in-situ surface observation. Applying this method, oxidation mechanisms of several coatings were characterised and specific behaviours observed and explained such as the appearance of oxide ridges and the behaviour of a cerium barrier layer in case of cobalt-cerium coated steel. The heating ramp speed and the oxidation temperature were demonstrated to be crucial parameters to obtain the desired microstructure. The nitriding pretreatment of interconnect was investigated too and shows promising results for improving the steel oxidation resistance. Another combination of techniques was developed for the study of the Ni-YSZ anode by complementing the ESEM observation with continuous Mass Spectrometer (MS) acquisition. The first reduction of the NiO-YsZ anode was analysed under gas flows of hydrogen and hydrocarbons. Redox cycling effect on the anode microstructure was investigated and the resulting observations were in line with models from the literature for the reduction and re-oxidation kinetics. Finally, the demonstration of an active solid oxide cell in the microscope operating at more than 700°C under mixed gas paves the way to further possible studies approaching the device's observation in real operating conditions. Limitation of the ESEM techniques are discussed and recommendations for further improvements and perspectives given.
