A scale-dependent dynamic model for large-eddy simulation: application to a neutral atmospheric boundary layer

A scale-dependent dynamic subgrid-scale model for large-eddy simulation of turbulent flows is proposed. Unlike the traditional dynamic model, it does not rely on the assumption that the model coefficient is scale invariant. The model is based on a second test-filtering operation which allows us to determine from the simulation how the coefficient varies with scale. The scale-dependent model is tested in simulations of a neutral atmospheric boundary layer. In this application, near the ground the grid scale is by necessity comparable to the local integral scale (of the order of the distance to the wall). With the grid scale and/or the test-filter scale being outside the inertial range, scale invariance is broken. The results are compared with those from (a) the traditional Smagorinsky model that requires specification of the coefficient and of a wall damping function, and (b) the standard dynamic model that assumes scale invariance of the coefficient. In the near-surface region the traditional Smagorinsky and standard dynamic models are too dissipative and not dissipative enough, respectively. Simulations with the scale-dependent dynamic model yield the expected trends of the coefficient as a function of scale and give improved predictions of velocity spectra at different heights from the ground. Consistent with the improved dissipation characteristics, the scale-dependent model also yields improved mean velocity profiles.

An Intercomparison of LES Subgrid-Scale Models for Simulations of Slope Flows

We propose an inter-comparison of Smagorinsky type subgrid-scale models for the simulation of high Reynolds number katabatic flows, with the purpose of testing the validity of some of the model's assumptions for the considered application. Katabatic flows arise along sloping surfaces under stably stratified conditions and are a direct consequence of surface cooling. Understanding their structure is of great interest in meteorology because of the broad band of areas and scales that they cover, influencing from local valleys microclimate (e.g. over Salt Lake and Phoenix valleys) to synoptic scale motions (e.g. over Antarctica). Large-eddy simulation (LES), on the other hand, represents an important tool to study high-Reynolds number flows and has undergone significant developments and validations in the past years, confirming its reliability when adopted to simulate a variety of atmospheric (and industrial) flows. The stable stratification of the environment and the complex dynamics that arise close to the surface in katabatic winds – leading eventually to the formation of the so-called low level jet – represent a tough test case for closure models, questioning their applicability over a broad range of filter (grid) scales and motivating the proposed work. The study is performed in the idealized framework of the Prandtl model, the set of normalized, filtered Boussinesq equations is solved on a regular domain, adopting an in-house mixed pseudo-spectral / finite difference code. The original static Smagorinsky model (SMAG), the standard dynamic model with planar averaging of the coefficient (PASI) and the more recent scale-dependent Smagorinsky model with Lagrangian averaging of the coefficients (LASD) are adopted to independently parametrize the subgrid-scale terms for kinematic momentum and energy, which arise from the filtering operation. Results focus on the statistically steady state solution of the problem and show how mean profiles are consistent across subgrid-scale models and most of the discretizations, whereas second order statistics show strong dependence on the spatial resolution, which is partially alleviated once the scale invariance assumption of the model coefficient is relaxed. For the considered resolutions we show that scale-invariance of the model coefficient does in fact not hold – on average – in proximity of the low level jet and close to the wall. At these location of strong shear production the support of the LES filter is approaching the integral scale and the LASD model is therefore expected to provide a more accurate estimation of the Smagorinsky coefficient. Considerations regarding the dissipation rates of the different subgrid-scale models and on mixing efficiency of resolved and modeled turbulence will be discussed.

Simulation of benchmark and industrial unsteady compressible turbulent fluid flows

Large-eddy simulation (LES) is a very promising technique for the numerical computation of unsteady turbulent flows, and seems to be the perfect tool to simulate the compressible air flow around a high-speed train in a tunnel, providing unsteady results for aerodynamic and aeroacoustic analysis. To look into this possible future application of LES, two major lines of investigation are pursued in this thesis: first, the study of the effective ability of shock-capturing schemes to predict fundamental turbulent phenomena; second, the analysis of the aerodynamic phenomena induced by a high-speed train in a tunnel. The numerical simulation of compressible flows requires the use of shock-capturing schemes. These schemes can be relatively dissipative and mask the subgrid-scale contribution introduced in a large-eddy simulation to account for the unresolved turbulence scales. To estimate their effective dissipation and their ability to resolve turbulence phenomena, shock-capturing schemes widely used for aeronautical applications, from second- to fifth-order space accuracy, are employed here for simulating well-known fundamental flows in subsonic and supersonic regimes. Direct and large-eddy numerical simulations are undertaken for the inviscid and viscous Taylor-Green vortex decay problem, the freely decaying homogeneous and isotropic turbulence, and the fully developed channel flow. For all the turbulent flows investigated, several turbulence statistics are computed and the numerical dissipation of the schemes tested is interpreted in terms of subgrid-scale dissipation in a LES context, yielding an equivalent Smagorinsky or dynamic coefficient. This coefficient is for all schemes of the same order of magnitude as the commonly accepted values in LES for the subgrid-scale term. On the grounds of this analysis and of the comparisons of the turbulence statistics with accurate data obtained in the literature, the addition of explicit subgrid-scale models to the shock-capturing schemes tested is not recommended. It is thus concluded that the use of the LES technique for compressible turbulent flows is not yet suitable for industrial applications. The aerodynamic phenomena generated by a high-speed train travelling in a tunnel are also discussed, their importance on the design of high-speed lies is pointed out, and the analysis tools commonly employed for their study are reviewed. To study numerically the three-dimensional, compressible and turbulent air flow around a high-speed train accelerating in a tunnel, by accounting for the unsteady effects at inlet and outlet boundaries due to the propagation of pressure waves generated at the train departure, new coupling conditions between one-dimensional and three-dimensional domains are developed. These conditions are applied successfully to the numerical simulation of the unsteady wake developing behind two- and three-dimensional vehicles, where the averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the turbulence modelling approach. The influence on the wake of the length of the vehicle tail is also discussed and results of multi-dimensional simulations are compared with one-dimensional data.

Turbulence and flows in the plasma boundary of snowflake magnetic configurations

The power exhaust through the scrape-off layer (SOL) in fusion reactors is expected to be significantly higher than in ITER, thus questioning the extrapolation of the ITER exhaust solution to these devices. The snowflake (SF) magnetic configuration is one of the alternative exhaust configurations being considered to mitigate the heat vessel loads in fusion reactors. The SF configuration features a second-order null of the poloidal magnetic field, i.e. a point where the poloidal magnetic field and its spatial derivatives vanish. As a consequence, the null-point is connected to the wall through four legs, which define four strike points. The presence of the four strike points allows for a heat flux distribution on a larger area compared to standard divertor configurations that feature two strike points. SF configurations are obtained experimentally by generating two first-order X-points close to each other. When the two X-points coincide, a second-order null point is obtained. However, in practice, the two X-points never coincide perfectly and, according to their relative position, we distinguish between the snowflake plus (SF+) and snowflake minus (SF-). The configuration with the two X-points coinciding is usually referred to as ideal SF. All these configurations have been experimentally investigated in the TCV, NSTX, EAST, and DIII-D tokamaks and are considered for the DTT tokamak. Numerical simulations of SF configurations, carried out by means of the EMC3-Eirene and the SOLPS codes, are unable to reproduce the heat flux distribution observed experimentally, calling for detailed investigations of the turbulence and flows in the SF plasma boundary. We present the first global turbulent simulations of the plasma dynamics in SF configurations, including the ideal SF, the SF+ and SF- configurations [1]. These simulations carried out by using the GBS code [2], evolve self-consistently the fluctuating and equilibrium quantities, as they result from the interplay of a heat and particle source in the core, turbulent transport, and parallel losses to the vessel wall. The simulations allow us to disentangle the mechanisms behind the heat flux distribution among the different strike points. As pointed out by our simulations, the heat flux can be reduced by a factor of two in the SF configurations, with respect to single-null configurations. The activation of the unconnected strike points in the ideal SF and in the SF+ configurations, also observed in the experiments, is due to the presence of a steady ExB equilibrium flow in the null region that provides a cross-field transport mechanism towards the private flux region. The origin, the properties and the effects of this steady ExB equilibrium flow are carefully analyzed and described as well as its dependence on the direction of the toroidal magnetic field and on the distance between the two X-points.
