Abstract

The reaction of half-sandwich complexes of ruthenium, rhodium, and iridium with amino-substituted 3-hydroxy-2-pyridone ligands in aqueous solution gives monomeric O,O'-chelate complexes. Upon addition of base, the complexes assemble to form trimeric metallamacrocycles, as evidenced by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray analyses. The macrocycles are able to act as highly selective receptors for lithium ions. The binding constants depend on the nature of the half-sandwich complex. the ligand, and the pH. With a commercially available (cymene)Ru complex, a receptor with a Li-divided by binding Constant of K-a = 5.8 (+/-1.0) x 10(4) M-1 and a Li-divided by-Na+ selectivity of 10 000:1 can be obtained. The fact that the assembly process of the receptor is pH-dependent can be used to detect the presence of lithium ions by a pH measurement. Furthermore, it is possible to transduce the binding of Li-divided by into a change of color by means of a chemical reaction with FeCl3. This allows the detection of Li-divided by in the pharmacologically relevant concentration range of 0.5-1.5 mM by the "naked eye".

12-Metallacrown-3 complexes were formed by self-assembly of organometallic half-sandwich complexes [(π-ligand)MCl2]2 (M = Ru, Rh, Ir) and 3-hydroxy-2-pyridone ligands in the presence of Cs2CO3 as base. Upon mixing of different macrocycles, reversible metal fragment exchange occured, resulting in the generation of small dynamic combinatorial libraries. Investigation of their adaptive behaviour revealed a strong bias for the amplification of hetero-assemblies, and especially of the member whose composition reflects the overall composition of the library. As a consequence, it is not necessarily the thermodynamically most stable member (e.g. the assembly with the highest affinity to a given target) that is amplified the most. Dynamic exchange processes of this kind have also been used to synthesise mixed-metal macrocycles by controlled desymmetrisation of sterically hindered 12-metallacrown-3 complexes. Using amino-substituted 3-hydroxy-2-pyridone ligands, monomeric O,O'-chelate complexes were formed in aqueous solution. Modifications of the bridging ligand allowed the design of a potential fluorescent PET sensor for Li+ ions in water. 7Li / 6Li isotope separation was achieved by complexation of LiCl with 12-metallacrown-3 complexes having sterically very demanding π-ligands. An enrichment of 7Li of 5.4 % was observed. Using ligands in which two 3-hydroxy-2-pyridone units were connected by a linker, hexanuclear structures of up to 2.8 nm have been obtained. These assemblies can be regarded as expanded triple-stranded helicates.

Calorimetric and Spectroscopic Studies on the Solvation Energetics for H2 Storage in the CO2/HCOOH System

Solvents play a crucial role in many chemical reactions and additives can be used to shift the reaction equilibrium. Herein we study the enthalpy of mixing for selected solvents (aqueous, organic) and basic additives (amines, aqueous KOH) when mixed with formic acid with the aim to optimize hydrogen storage/delivery in the CO2/HCOOH system. Formic acid, resulting from carbon dioxide hydrogenation, reaches highest yields when effectively “removed” from the reaction equilibrium. In terms of energy efficiency, any heat release during CO2 hydrogenation has to be reinvested in the reverse reaction, during the production of hydrogen. In any scenario, the usage of basic chemicals, non innocent solvents causes higher energy release in the CO2 hydrogenation, which as to be reinvested in the hydrogen delivery process. Therefore, the enthalpy of mixing is a valuable parameter for designing hydrogen storage devices since it allows to estimate the energy balance for the CO2 hydrogenation/H2 liberation cycle. The highest formic acid concentrations in direct catalytic CO2 hydrogenation under acidic conditions were reached in DMSO. DMSO exhibits considerably stronger interactions with formic acid compared to water as was observed in calorimetric measurements. This difference can be ascribed, at least partly, to stronger hydrogen bonding of FA to DMSO than to water in the corresponding solutions, examined by a combination of IR spectroscopic and quantum chemical studies. Furthermore, the investigation of the DMSO/FA- and water/FA systems by 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy revealed that only 1:1 aggregates are formed in the DMSO solutions of FA in a broad concentration range, while the stoichiometry and the number of the FA-water aggregates essentially depends on the concentration of the aqueous solutions.

This thesis investigates the effect of different parameters such as Fe (III), D-gluconate and heterogeneous particles on the nucleation and growth of synthetic C-S-H by using the dropwise precipitation method. Firstly, the effect of Fe (III) on the synthetic C-S-H system was investigated. This was achieved by controlling pH and also Fe (III) ion concentration. The experiments at pH higher than 11.0 of initial solutions containing Fe leads to the pre-precipitation of an amorphous Fe phase (ferrihydrite) which is then transformed to the more stable crystalline Fe phase of siliceous hydrogarnet. This condition is closely related to the phase formation pathway in real systems where the formation of ferrihydrite precludes the formation of the more thermodynamically stable iron containing siliceous hydrogarnet is also observed. To investigate the possible inclusion of Fe into the C-S-H structure, the experimental conditions were designed to avoid the pre-precipitation of ferrihydrite. This was achieved by controlling ionic speciation of the solution containing Fe with controlled pH (2.5). Magnetic resonance data strongly supported that the Fe (III) is incorporated into the C-S-H structure. Secondly, this thesis investigates the effect of D-gluconate on the nucleation and growth of synthetic C-S-H. One effect of D-gluconate on synthetic C-S-H was a surface interaction which led to the formation of bi-pyramidal cage-like structures from the assembly of the precipitated C-S-H nanofoils. Characterization confirmed the adsorption of D-gluconate on the C-S-H surface but no changes in the underlying C-S-H structure could be discerned. From calorimetry data, D-gluconate not only interacts with newly precipitated C-S-H surfaces but also strongly on the dissolving solids in Portland cement e.g. alite, retarding hydration significantly. The complexation between calcium and D-gluconate in solution showed that increasing D-gluconate concentration gave more complexation with calcium and modified the kinetics of nucleation and growth. When collecting kinetics data to look at influences of D-gluconate on nucleation and growth mixed C-S-H morphologies nanoglobules, nanfoils and nanofibrils were observed. For a quantitative analysis by the population balance method recently developed in our lab such a mixed morphology cannot be analyzed. The experimental conditions for the collection of kinetics data for uniform morphology of precipitated synthetic C-S-H were found by controlling pH and D-gluconate concentrations. This new and unique kinetics data will in the near future be evaluated by using population balance modeling in order to discern the quantitative effect of nucleation and growth of precipitated synthetic C-S-H formation in the presence of D-gluconate. Finally, to approach more real system conditions, heterogeneous particles (e.g. quartz and calcite) were introduced in the synthetic C-S-H system. Quartz and calcite were able to act as heterogeneous substrates for the nucleation and growth of precipitated synthetic C-S-H. The elemental maps confirmed uniformly distributed Ca, Si and O in nanofoils at the heterogeneous surfaces corresponding to the C-S-H composition. Without calcium ions in the silicate solution, calcite partially dissolved to give Ca2+ and CO32- ions which then formed C-S-H on its surface. Kinetics data shows different growth of C-S-H formation and will be evaluated in the future by using population balance modeling.
