Molecular Dynamics Study of the Incommensurate Phase in Hexamethylenetetramine Suberate

Incommensurate structure of Hexamethylenetetramine suberate (C6H12N4)(HOOC-(CH2)6-COOH) has been solved from single crystal x-ray diffraction data. A molecular dynamics simulation of this system was carried out from 15 K to 580K. A second-generation consistent forcefield (CFF) and a compensating pressure tensor field were used to describe the interactions between atoms and to account for deficiencies in the forcefield. Starting from the experimental 298K structure, the phase transitions were investigated over an extended temperature range. A high symmetry commensurate structure exists at temperatures between 410K and 290K. For temperatures lower than 290K, a new periodicity appears in the structure. The system reaches a low symmetry lock-in phase at about 150K. An incommensurate structure appears between the high and low symmetry phases between 290K and 150K. The new periodicity associated with the incommensurate modulation is due to the appearance of additional long range ordering of the carbon chains. The present simulation not only reproduces well the experimental x-ray diffraction results but also gives new insight into the origin of the incommensurate behavior.

Urotropin azelate: a rather unwilling co-crystal

Urotropin (U) and azelaic acid (AA) form 1:1 co-crystals (UA) that give rise to a rather complex diffraction pattern, the main features of which are diffuse rods and bands in addition to the Bragg reflections. UA is characterized by solvent inclusions, parasite phases, and high vacancy and dislocation densities. These defects compounded with the pronounced tendency of U to escape from the crystal edifice lead to at least seven exotic phase transitions (many of which barely manifest themselves in a differential scanning calorimetry trace). These involve different incommensurate phases and a peritectoid reaction in the recrystallization regime (T-h >0.6). The system may be understood as an OD (order-disorder) structure based on a layer with layer group P(c)c2 and cell a(o) similar or equal to 4.7, b similar or equal to 26.1 and c similar or equal to 14.4 Angstrom. At 338 K the layer stacking is random, but with decreasing temperature the build-up of an orthorhombic MDO (maximal degree of order) structure with cell a(1) = 2a(o), b(1) = b, c(1) = c and space group Pcc2 is begun (at similar to 301 K). The superposition structure of the OD system at T = 286 (1) K with space group Bmmb and cell (a) over cap = 2a(o), (b) over cap = b and (c) over cap = c/2 owes its cohesion to van der Waals interactions between the AA chains and to three types of hydrogen bonds of varied strength between U-U and U-AA. Before reaching completion, this MDO structure is transformed, at 282 K, into a monoclinic one with cell a(m) = a(o) + c/4, b(m) = b, c(m) = -2(a(o) + c/2), space group P2(1)/c, spontaneous deformation similar to2degrees, and ferroelastic domains. This transformation is achieved in two steps: first a furtive triggering transition, which is not yet fully understood, and second an improper ferroelastic transition. At similar to 233 K, the system reaches its ground state (cell a(M) = a(m), bM = b, c(M) = c(m) and space group P2(1)/c) via an irreversible transition. The phase transitions below 338 K are described by a model based on the interaction of two thermally activated slip systems. The OD structure is described in terms of a three-dimensional Monte Carlo model that involves first- and second-neighbour interactions along the a axis and first-neighbour interactions along the b and c axes. This model includes random shifts of the chains along their axes and satisfactorily accounts for most features that are seen in the observed diffraction pattern.

Pulsed laser deposition of (SrBa)Nb2O6 thin films and their properties

Strontium barium niobate (SrxBa1-xNb2O6, shortly SBN) is a solid solution system with tetragonal tungsten bronze crystal structure. It exhibits a ferroelectric phase with only one polar axis and a transition temperature depending on the Sr/Ba ratio. This thesis studies the growth of SBN thin films, in order to obtain a ferroelectric thin film model system for the study of 180° domain switching close to the ferroelectric phase transition. SBN has been chosen not only because uniaxial, but because it is possible to tune the temperature of phase transition varying the Sr/Ba ratio. It is thus possible to study electric properties of the phase transition close to room temperature, where conduction phenomena related to defects are normally lower. Thin films of SBN were grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition in a vacuum system constructed during this thesis work. For the formulation of a model it is desirable to have a system as close as possible to a single crystal. Therefore deposition parameters have been optimized to grow SBN thin films with the polar axis oriented perpendicular to the film plane. The films are integrated in parallel plate capacitor structures, in order to measure dielectric properties. The stability of the ferroelectric phase is found to be sensitive to impurities; contaminants with concentration below 1% induce a lowering of the transition temperature of about 100°C. Strain as well has influence on the phase transition; in the case of substrate with thermal expansion coefficients different from the SBN ones, the SBN film is under stress. A 0.6% tensile strain induces a lowering of the transition temperature of about 100°C, this is the case of silicon single crystal substrate. Grown on strontium titanate single crystals (STO), whose thermo-mechanical properties are close to the one of SBN, the films exhibit a phase transition temperature compatible with the one measured on single crystals. The obtained films suffer from leakage that is reduced by thermal treatment in oxygen rich atmosphere. The oxygen vacancies, created during the deposition process, are considered to be responsible of leakage. Vacancies recovery upon annealing does not eliminate the problem, and measurement of polarization at room temperature is difficult. However, piezoelectric measurements performed on individual grains, with atomic force microscope, prove that these have ferroelectric properties; by these experiment has been proved that it is possible to switch the polarization. Films with a disordered structure of grains are much less leaky than the ones with columnar grains spanning the whole cross section. These observations lead to the conclusion that conduction goes trough the grain boundaries. On STO single crystals, SBN grows epitaxial in Volmer-Weber mode. With a suitable preparation of the substrate surface, it is possible to induce the growth of films with different orientations of the polar axis: in the film plane, perpendicular to it or inclined of 45°. A model is proposed, explaining the epitaxial relation with the substrate on the basis of the perovskite kernel contained in the unit cell of the tetragonal tungsten bronze structure. The film grows from the nucleation of the perovskite structure that rules the orientation of the film; the high temperature at which the substrate is kept during the deposition, assure the necessary mobility for the arriving atoms to organize in the SBN structure around these nuclei. The study of literature data allows to state that such a model is valid not only for substrates with perovskite structure, but can be extended to substrates with a cubic crystal structure, like magnesium oxide.

Molecular dynamics simulation of hexamine and suberic acid

In order to perform a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of the incommensurate crystalline structure hexamethylenetetramine suberate (C6H12N4)(HOOC-(CH2)(6)-COOH), we present in a first step the separate simulations of the crystalline structure of each of the two pure components, hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) and suberic acid. The domain decomposition parallel MD program ddgmq is used for this purpose. A second-generation consistent force field (CFF91) is employed to describe the interactions between atoms. Starting from experimental crystal structures, both pure components were heated from low to high temperatures. Our MD results show that the HMT system can be well represented by CFF91. In the case of suberic acid the layered structure of the crystal is largely preserved although deviations in the unit cell lengths from the experimental values are similar to10%. Rather than attempt a complex re-parametrisation of CFF91 we chose to impose a fixed compensating external pressure tensor to correct for the deficiencies of the chosen force field. After optimising this compensating external pressure tensor at one temperature we find that experimental lattice constants and angles can be well reproduced over a range of temperatures.
