The Laboratory of Digital Humanities (DHLAB) at EPFL, founded by Professor Frederic Kaplan in 2012, focuses on developing computational approaches for managing large digital cultural objects and executing high-resolution digitization of artifacts, buildings, and cities. The lab aims to gain new insights into digital cultures, including visual languages, video culture, and linguistic mediations. DHLAB has been involved in various interdisciplinary projects, such as the Venice Time Machine and Time Machine Europe, which aim to create multidimensional models of historical cities. Additionally, the lab has worked on projects like Swisspress and Impresso, which involve digitizing and analyzing historical newspapers using natural language processing and deep learning techniques.
