The Laboratory of Simulation in Solid Mechanics (LSMS) at EPFL conducts cutting-edge research at the interface of Mechanics, Materials Science, and Scientific Computing. They develop robust numerical methods for High-Performance Computing, focusing on mechanisms from nanostructured materials to structural mechanics. An important research theme is friction and fracture, with a modern approach to traditional engineering wear models. LSMS collaborates actively with academic and industrial partners worldwide, releasing diverse open-source software. Their research spans from fundamental to applied science, addressing damage mechanisms in ductile and brittle materials, contact mechanics, and micromechanics.
