The Simanis lab at EPFL, led by Prof. Viesturs Simanis, focuses on studying the regulation of the cell cycle in mitosis and meiosis using the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe as a model organism. They investigate the spatial and temporal coordination of key cell cycle events such as S-phase, mitosis, and cytokinesis to ensure accurate cell division. By analyzing the Septation Initiation Network (SIN) and its role in cytokinesis, the lab aims to understand the mechanisms underlying cell division and the implications of errors in this process. Their research extends to exploring the conservation of SIN signaling in various organisms, including pathogenic fungi, with potential implications for clinical treatments.
