In engineering, damage tolerance is a property of a structure relating to its ability to sustain defects safely until repair can be effected. The approach to engineering design to account for damage tolerance is based on the assumption that flaws can exist in any structure and such flaws propagate with usage. This approach is commonly used in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, and civil engineering to manage the extension of cracks in structure through the application of the principles of fracture mechanics. A structure is considered to be damage tolerant if a maintenance program has been implemented that will result in the detection and repair of accidental damage, corrosion and fatigue cracking before such damage reduces the residual strength of the structure below an acceptable limit. Ph.D. Research Proposal: Biomimetic Characteristics of an Active Deployable Structure

Biomimetic structures are structures that demonstrate increased functionality through mimicking qualities of biological organisms. Self-repair and adaptation mechanisms are examples of biological qualities that can be adapted in structural engineering. Over the last decades, great strides have been made in advancing theory and practice of active structural control. However, little scientific progress has been made on biomimetic structures. Advances in sensor, actuator, and microprocessor technologies provide increasing possibilities for implementing active control systems in the built environment. Intelligent control methodologies such as self-diagnosis, self-repair and learning could be integrated into structural systems to provide innovative solutions. The general goal of this thesis is to study biomimetic characteristics of an active and deployable tensegrity bridge. Building on previous research carried out at EPFL, this thesis proposal includes the following objectives: 1) design an active control system in order to ensure damage tolerance of a deployable tensegrity pedestrian bridge; 2) extend existing strategies for self-diagnosis of the deployable tensegrity bridge to avoid ambiguous results; 3) extend existing strategies in order to achieve a more robust self-repair scheme; 4) develop algorithms that allow the active control system to learn efficiently using case-based reasoning; 5) validate the methodologies developed with experiments on a near full-scale (1/3) model. A literature survey of biomimetics, structural control, tensegrity structures, deployable structures, deployable tensegrity structures, active tensegrity structures, case-based reasoning, system identification, and multi-objective search has identified that these objectives are original. Results obtained from the preliminary studies demonstrate the potential of this research strategy. A research plan containing 19 subtasks that will be completed by the end of April 2012 leaves sufficient buffer time before the official end of this Ph.D. research on September 30, 2012.

Hierarchical composites, embodied by natural materials ranging from bone to bamboo, may offer combinations of material properties inaccessible to conventional composites. Using global load sharing (GLS) theory, a well-established micromechanics model for composites, we develop accurate numerical and analytical predictions for the strength and toughness of hierarchical composites with arbitrary fiber geometries, fiber strengths, interface properties, and number of hierarchical levels, N. The model demonstrates that two key material properties at each hierarchical level a characteristic strength and a characteristic fiber length control the scalings of composite properties. One crucial finding is that short- and long-fiber composites behave radically differently. Long-fiber composites are significantly stronger than short-fiber composites, by a factor of 2(N) or more; they are also significantly tougher because their fiber breaks are bridged by smaller-scale fibers that dissipate additional energy. Indeed, an "infinite" fiber length appears to be optimal in hierarchical composites. However, at the highest level of the composite, long fibers localize on planes of pre-existing damage, and thus short fibers must be employed instead to achieve notch sensitivity and damage tolerance. We conclude by providing simple guidelines for micro structural design of hierarchical composites, including the selection of N, the fiber lengths, the ratio of length scales at successive hierarchical levels, the fiber volume fractions, and the desired properties of the smallest-scale reinforcement. Our model enables superior hierarchical composites to be designed in a rational way, without resorting either to numerical simulation or trial-and-error-based experimentation. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Towards aerospace grade thin-ply composites: Effect of ply thickness, fibre, matrix and interlayer toughening on strength and damage tolerance

Thin-ply composites represent a promising approach to further improve the performance of carbon fibre composite structures thanks to their ability to delay the onset of matrix cracking and delamination up to the point of fibre dominated failure. However, this increased strength comes with a more brittle failure response which raises concerns on damage tolerance. Thus a careful material optimization is needed to address this trade-off. In this work, eight different formulations of thin-ply composites ranging from low modulus to high modulus carbon fibres are evaluated to understand the effects of the fibre and matrix constituents on the onset of damage and strength in unnotched tensile (UNT) tests of quasi isotropic laminates for ply thicknesses between 300 and 30 microns. The obtained experimental data are combined in master curve diagrams for simplified material selection process. It is observed that certain thin-ply composites with a ply thickness t < 134 mu m can reach UNT strength corresponding to or approaching the ultimate strain of the fibres as well as UNT stress at onset of damage as high as 92% of the latter. Based on this knowledge, a novel aerospace grade toughened thin-ply composite system is developed which can reach a quasi-isotropic UNT strength above 1 GPa (> 95% of the fibre strain). The newly developed composite is further optimized to improve damage tolerance by toughening the resin and selected interfaces. The effect of those modifications on damage tolerance are evaluated through compression strength after impact (CAI) tests and open hole tensile tests (OHT). It is found that an optimized interlayer toughened thin-ply composite based on 68 microns plies of intermediate modulus fibre can reach both outstanding strength properties with comparable or better CAI and OHT strength compared to current aerospace grade composites.
