A construction worker is a worker employed in the physical construction of the built environment and its infrastructure. Definition By some definitions, workers may be engaged in manual labour as unskilled or semi-skilled workers; they may be skilled tradespeople; or they may be supervisory or managerial personnel. Under safety legislation in the United Kingdom, for example, construction workers are defined as people "who work for or under the control of a contractor on a construction site"; in Canada, this can include people whose work includes ensuring conformance with building codes and regulations, and those who supervise other workers. The term is a broad and generic one and most construction workers are primarily described by the specific level and type of work they perform. South Sudan - Building Resources & Shelter Practices

Seasonal floods are a common and extended problem across several regions in South Sudan, causing considerable damage to houses, crops, and livelihoods. In this context, new housing and shelter solutions, besides being flood resilient, should take into account the native construction customs and locally available materials so as to better fit into the building culture in South Sudan. This report presents information about the housing construction in the country, including the building materials and skills that are available in local markets in South Sudan and the forms and functions of local housing. This information is useful for construction projects developed by NGOs, researchers, and practitioners. The methodology employed for the study comprised surveys in local markets and households, analysis of photographic records of shelters and tukuls, and consultation with on-site experts. The results provide insights into the most common construction techniques, materials, solutions, and average prices in the local markets. Besides, data was also gathered regarding cultural customs that shape the development of the shelters. Finally, although the data might be only representative of certain regions in South Sudan, it provides a comprehensive glimpse of the overall construction environment across the country.

Fractal geometry and its applications in timber construction

We have developed a geometric design method based on generalizations of IFS. We have shown that it is possible to extend the properties of fractal shapes to forms used in classical modeling (e.g Bézier or Splines). We have developed and studied a new formalism, which we named BCIFS (Boundary Controlled Iterated Function System), which could serve as basis for development of a computer aided design software called modeler. The resulting figures verify planarity constrains in order to facilitate their physical construction out of planar construction material. Finally, a series of tools has been worked out in order to convert the geometry data into a set of constructional elements, ready for integrated manufacturing.

In recent years, the necessity of using renewable and sustainable resources in the construction sector has become obvious. This has led to a revived interest in the natural advantages of timber as a building material. To this end, the Laboratory for Timber Constructions (IBOIS) aims to develop more efficient design and construction methods using digital tools such as robots, CNC machines, scanners, and augmented reality. Current research focuses on the development of so-called Integrally-Attached Timber Plate Structures (IATPS). This innovative construction system is inspired by ancient Japanese carpentry techniques. It uses interlocking joints to connect timber panels and create outstanding spatial structures (see below). Using timber connections provides a more sustainable alternative to standard gluing and screwing processes. The joints also help to guide the pieces during the assembly transforming the construction in a kind of large-scale puzzle. Another advantage of IATPS is the possibility to prefabricate all the pieces with the help of state-of-the art digital tools such as CNC routers and robots. To facilitate the adoption of IATPS in the industrial world, IBOIS researchers have developed a virtual design interface that helps architects, engineers and contractors to automate the creation of timber joints between the panels, compute associated structural analysis, as well as generate fabrication toolpaths and robotic trajectories.
