Alfio Quarteroni
Of italian nationality, Alfio Quarteroni was born on May 30th 1952. He pursued his studies in mathematics at University of Pavia and at University of Paris VI. In 1986 he was nominated full professor at Catholic University of Brescia, later professor in mathematics at University of Minnesota at Minneapolis and professor in numerical analysis at Politecnico di Milano. He is designated full professor in 1997 and enters into service with EPFL in 1998. At EPFL, he teaches numerical analysis to engineers and mathematicians and holds specialized courses about mathematical modelling and scientific computing for master and PhD students. He had been scientific director of CRS4, plenary speaker of more than two hundred international conferences; he is member of the European Academy of Sciences, the Italian Academy of Sciences, the Lombard Academy of Science and Letters. He is Editor in Chief of two book series (MS&A and Unitext) by Springer, associate editor of 25 international journals. He has been plenary speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians ICM2006. He had been responsible of several European research networks. His team has carried out the aerodynamic and hydrodynamic simulations for the optimization of Alinghi, the Swiss sailing yacht that has won two editions of the America's Cup in 2003 and 2007.
Jean-François Molinari
Professor J.F. Molinari is the director of the Computational Solid Mechanics Laboratory (http://lsms.epfl.ch) at EPFL, Switzerland. He holds an appointment in the Civil Engineering institute, which he directed from 2013 to 2017, and a joint appointment in the Materials Science institute. He started his tenure at EPFL in 2007, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2012. He is currently an elected member of the Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation in Division 2 (Mathematics, Natural and Engineering Sciences), and co editor in chief of the journal Mechanics of Materials. J.F. Molinari graduated from Caltech, USA, in 2001, with a M.S. and Ph.D. in Aeronautics. He held professorships in several countries besides Switzerland, including the United States with a position in Mechanical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University (2000-2006), and France at Ecole Normale Supérieure Cachan in Mechanics (2005-2007), as well as a Teaching Associate position at the Ecole Polytechnique de Paris (2006-2009).  The work conducted by Prof. Molinari and his collaborators takes place at the frontier between traditional disciplines and covers several length scales from atomistic to macroscopic scales. Over the years, Professor Molinari and his group have been developing novel multiscale approaches for a seamless coupling across scales. The activities of the laboratory span the domains of damage mechanics of materials and structures, nano- and microstructural mechanical properties, and tribology.
Olivier Martin
Olivier J.F. Martin a obtenu le diplôme (M.Sc.) et le doctorat en physique de l'Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) en 1989, respectivement 1994. En 1989 il a rejoint le laboratoire de recherche d'IBM à Rüschlikon près de Zurich, où il a étudié les propriétés optiques et thermiques des lasers semiconducteur. Entre 1994 et 1997 il était collaborateur scientifique de l'Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Zurich (ETHZ). En 1997 il a reçu une bourse Profil du Fonds National Suisse de la Recherche Scientifique (FNSRS) lui permettant de mettre sur pied un groupe de recherche indépendant. Entre 1996 et 1999, Olivier Martin a passé plus d'une année et demi aux U.S.A. comme collaborateur invité de l'Université de Californie à San Diego. En 2001 il a reçu une bourse de professeur assistant du FNSRS et devint professeur de Nano-optique à l'ETHZ. En 2003 il a été nommé professeur de nanophotonique et de traitement optique du signal à l'EPFL où il dirige actuellement le laboratoire de Nanophotonique & Métrologie.

He has written and edited 13 books and published over 320 peer reviewed papers; his work is cited more than 6000 times with an h-index of 39 (Scopus). Two of his papers are among the top 1% in the academic field of Engineering. He has given keynote and invited lectures at more than 40 leading international conferences. He has received several international awards (IACMAG, RM Quigley, Roberval) and delivered honorary lectures (Vardoulakis, Minnesota; G.A. Leonards, Purdue; Kersten, Minnesota). Jan Sickmann Hesthaven
Prof. Hesthaven received an M.Sc. in computational physics from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in August 1991. During the studies, the last 6 months of 1989 was spend at JET, the european fusion laboratory in Culham, UK. Following graduation, he was awarded a 3 year fellowship to begin work towards a Ph.D. at Riso National Laboratory in the Department of Optics and Fluid Dynamics. During the 3 years of study, the academic year of 1993-1994 was spend in the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University and three 3 months during the summer of 1994 in Department of Mathematics and Statistics at University of New Mexico. In August 1995, he recieved a Ph.D. in Numerical Analysis from the Institute of Mathematical Modelling (DTU). Following graduation in August 1995, he was awarded an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship in Advanced Scientific Computing and was approinted Visiting Assistant Professor in the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. In December of 1996, he was appointed consultant to the Institute of Computer Applications in Science and Engineering(ICASE) at NASA Langley Research Center (NASA LaRC). As of July 1999, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics, in September 2000 he was awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, as of July 2001 he was awarded a Manning Assistant Professorship, and in March 2002, he was awarded an NSF Career Award. In January 2003, he was promoted to Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics with tenure and in May 2004 he was awarded Philip J. Bray Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Sciences (the highest award given for teaching excellence in all sciences at Brown University). He was promoted to Professor of Applied Mathematics as of July 2005. From October 2006 to June 2013, he was the Founding Director of the Center for Computation and Visualization (CCV) at Brown University. As of October 2007, he holds the (honorary) title of Professor (Adjunct) at the Technical University of Denmark. In November 2009, he successfully defended his dr.techn thesis at the Technical University of Denmark and was rewarded the degree of Doctor Technices -- the highest academic distinction awarded based on ... substantial and lasting contributions that has helped to move the research area forward and penetrated into applications. As grant Co-PI he served from Aug 2010 to June 2013 as Deputy Director of the Institute of Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM), the newest NSF Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. After having spend his entire academic career at Brown University, Prof Hesthaven decided to pursue new challenges and joined the Mathematics Institute of Computational Science and Engineering (MATHICSE) at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland in July 2013.  In March 2014 he was elected SIAM Fellow for contributions to high-order methods for partial differential equations.
Yves Perriard
Yves Perriard was born in Lausanne in 1965. He received the M. Sc. in Microengineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - Lausanne (EPFL) in 1989 and the Ph D. degree in 1992. Co-founder of Micro-Beam SA, he was CEO of this company involved in high precision electric drive. Senior lecturer from 1998 and professor since 2003, he is currently director of Laboratory of Integrated Actuators. His research interests are in the field of new actuator design and associated electronic devices. In 2009, he is appointed Vice-Director of the Microengineering Institute in Neuchâtel until 2011. In 2013 the Federal Council has named him the the CTI commission in Bern. In 2014 he is appointed guest professor at Zhejiang University in China. In 2017, the lab is granted by the Werner Siemens Foundation of an amount of 12 millions CHF in order to set up a new Center for Artificial Muscules. Jacques Rappaz
Originaire de Neyruz-sur-Moudon (VD), Jacques Rappaz est né le 22 mars 1947. Après ses études primaires et secondaires à Lausanne, il étudie la physique, de 1964 à 1970, à l'Ecole Polytechnique de l'Université de Lausanne (EPUL et EPFL dès 1969) où il obtient son diplôme en janvier 1971. Il entreprend ensuite un travail de recherche en analyse numérique à l'EPFL. En avril 1976, il soutient une thèse consacrée à l'approximation spectrale d'opérateurs provenant de la physique des plasmas. De 1977 à 1980, il est boursier du Fonds National Suisse (FNS) et séjourne à Paris. A l'Ecole Polytechnique de Palaiseau et à l'Université Paris VI, il travaille sur l'approximation de problèmes non-linéaires provenant de la physique.De 1980 à 1985, il retourne à l'EPFL en tant que chercheur au FNS puis collaborateur scientifique du Professeur Jean Descloux. En 1983 il entreprend, en collaboration avec l'entreprise Alusuisse, des recherches sur la simulation numérique du procédé Hall-Héroult permettant la production de l'aluminium par électrolyse. Ces recherches ont débouché par la suite sur de nombreux projets en collaboration avec les compagnies Alcan, puis Péchiney et Rio Tinto. En 1985, Jacques Rappaz est nommé professeur ordinaire de mathématiques appliquées à l'Université de Neuchâtel qu'il quittera en octobre 1987 pour un poste de professeur ordinaire à l'EPFL. De 1983 à 2012 où il a pris sa retraite, Jacques Rappaz a enseigné de nombreux cours d'analyse et d'analyse numérique aux ingénieurs et aux mathématiciens de l'EPFL, de l’Université de Genève et de l'Université de Neuchâtel. Sa recherche concerne les aspects théoriques et pratiques de la résolution numérique des équations aux dérivées partielles. Il a participé à de nombreux projets de simulations numériques en collaboration avec les milieux industriels et/ou les départements d'ingénieurs de l'EPFL.
François Gallaire
Né le 26 février 1975, François Gallaire obtient, en 1998, le diplôme d’ingénieur de l’Ecole Polytechnique à Paris et, en 1999, un master en « Physique des liquides » à l’Université Pierre et Marie Curie, toujours à Paris. Il rejoint ensuite le Laboratoire d’hydrodynamique (LadHyX) à l’Ecole polytechnique où il soutient, en 2003, une thèse sur le thème des instabilités des jets tournants et sur le contrôle de l’éclatement tourbillonnaire sous la direction de Jean-Marrc Chomaz. En 2003, il est nommé chargé de recherche au CNRS au Laboratoire J.A. Dieudonné de l’Université de Nice Sophia-Antipolis.En 2009, il rejoint l'EPFL pour y fonder le laboratoire des mécanique des fluides et instabilités (LFMI).  Ses recherches se concentrent sur l’étude des propriétés fondamentales de stabilité des écoulements de fluides et sont guidées par les applications réelles, en particulier le contrôle des écoulements. Récemment, il a réalisé d’importantes contributions dans les domaines de la micro-fluidique (l’analyse de la manipulation par laser d’une goutte dans un micro-canal) et la dynamique des bio-fluides (le descriptif mécanique de l’anévrisme de l’aorte abdominale).
Michel Deville
Michel Deville est né le 26 février 1945 à Charleroi (Belgique). Ingénieur civil électricien-mécanicien de l'Université Catholique de Louvain (1968), il y a présenté sa thèse de doctorat en sciences appliquées en 1974. Le sujet en était l'intégration numérique des équations de Navier-Stokes par la méthode des différences finies. En 1974-1975, il séjourne en tant que boursier OTAN au Département de mathématiques du MIT chez le Prof. S.A. Orszag. A cette occasion, il se familiarise avec les méthodes spectrales pour le calcul des écoulements de fluides incompressibles. Ensuite, sa carrière académique se déroule à l'Université de Louvain: chargé de cours, professeur, professeur ordinaire. Depuis 1979, il est collaborateur à la division d'aérodynamique de l'ONERA (Chatillon, France). Il est spécialiste des méthodes spectrales. Il applique les méthodes numériques à la simulation directe d'écoulement des fluides, à la modélisation de la turbulence et au calcul des fluides non-Newtoniens. Il est nommé professeur à l'EPFL le 1er septembre 1993, où il conduit les travaux liés à la mécanique des fluides numériques.Il prend sa retraite le 28 février 2010. Il est actuellement rédacteur en chef de la revue Computers and Fluids.
