Gastroesophageal reflux diseaseGastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is one of the upper gastrointestinal chronic diseases in which stomach content persistently and regularly flows up into the esophagus, resulting in symptoms and/or complications. Symptoms include dental corrosion, dysphagia, heartburn, odynophagia, regurgitation, non-cardiac chest pain, extraesophageal symptoms such as chronic cough, hoarseness, reflux-induced laryngitis, or asthma.
Esophageal motility studyAn esophageal motility study (EMS) or esophageal manometry is a test to assess motor function of the upper esophageal sphincter (UES), esophageal body and lower esophageal sphincter (LES). An EMS is typically done to evaluate suspected disorders of motility or peristalsis of the esophagus. These include achalasia, diffuse esophageal spasm, nutcracker esophagus and hypertensive lower esophageal sphincter. These disorders typically present with dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, usually to both solids and liquids even initially.

Esophageal strictureA benign esophageal stricture, or peptic stricture, is a narrowing or tightening of the esophagus that causes swallowing difficulties. Symptoms of esophageal strictures include heartburn, bitter or acid taste in the mouth, choking, coughing, shortness of breath, frequent burping or hiccups, pain or trouble swallowing, throwing up blood, or weight loss. It can be caused by or associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophagitis, a dysfunctional lower esophageal sphincter, disordered motility, lye ingestion, or a hiatal hernia.
Cancer de l'œsophageLe cancer de l'œsophage est un cancer se développant dans la muqueuse de l'œsophage. Le type le plus fréquent est le carcinome épidermoïde de l'œsophage, souvent associé à une intoxication alcoolo-tabagique et/ou au fait de boire des boissons trop chaudes. Le deuxième type en fréquence est l'adénocarcinome. En 2016 il a peu de thérapies ciblées et le pronostic est mauvais. On distinguait 2 types de cancer (carcinomes épidermoïdes œsophagien, et adénocarcinomes œsophagiens, les premiers évoquant plus des carcinomes squameux d'autres organes que les adénocarcinomes œsophagiens).
AchalasieL'achalasie, qui signifie « difficulté à se relâcher » , également appelée cardio-spasme ou mégaœsophage, est une maladie rare de cause inconnue consistant en un trouble moteur primitif de l'œsophage. Elle est définie par l’absence du péristaltisme œsophagien et par une absence de relaxation ou relaxation incomplète du sphincter inférieur de l'œsophage (SIO). L'atteinte a été décrite pour la première fois par Thomas Willis en 1674. Le taux d'incidence est de pour par an, à peu près comparable selon les pays.
