Lexical semantics

Lexical semantics (also known as lexicosemantics), as a subfield of linguistic semantics, is the study of word meanings. It includes the study of how words structure their meaning, how they act in grammar and compositionality, and the relationships between the distinct senses and uses of a word. The units of analysis in lexical semantics are lexical units which include not only words but also sub-words or sub-units such as affixes and even compound words and phrases. Lexical units include the catalogue of words in a language, the lexicon. Lexical semantics looks at how the meaning of the lexical units correlates with the structure of the language or syntax. This is referred to as syntax-semantics interface. The study of lexical semantics concerns:

the classification and decomposition of lexical items
the differences and similarities in lexical semantic structure cross-linguistically
the relationship of lexical meaning to sent

The Operational Semantics and Implementation of a Core Dart language

In this report we present the specification of the operational semantics of Dart Kernel and a reference implementation of Dart Kernel in Dart. We design a CESK-like machine to specify the operational semantics of Dart Kernel and we implement an interpreter that follows closely the small-step semantics of the language. This approach allows us to define the behaviour of the rich features of Dart Kernel, such as exception handling and asynchronous execution. Since Dart Kernel is an evolving language, the specification is expected to evolve with it and the semantics for new features needs to be defined further. The work done for this project sets the grounds for further formalization of the behaviour of the language with a formal proof management system, as Coq.

Conceptual Synopses of Semantics in Social Networks Sharing Structured Data

We are interested in the problem of data sharing in overlay networks that have a social structure, i.e. participants are linked and exchange data with others w.r.t. the similarity of their data semantics. In this paper we propose a methodology to produce conceptual synopses for the semantics that are encapsulated in the schemas of relational data that are shared in a social network. These synopses are constructed solely based on semantics that can be deduced from schemas themselves with some optional additional conceptual clarifications. The produced synopses represent in a concentrated way the current semantics. Existing or new participants can refer to these synopses in order to determine their interest in the network. We present a methodology that employs the conceptual synopsis for the construction of a mediating schema. These can be Used as global interface,; for sharing of information in the social network. Furthermore, we extend our methodology in order to compress the conceputal synopsis such that infrequent concepts are eliminated and the respective inferred global schema encapsulates the most popular semantics of the social network.

Human-Robot Interaction: Tackling the AI Challenges

Human-Robot interaction is an area full of challenges for artificial intelligence: dynamic, partially unknown environments that are not originally designed for autonomous machines; a large variety of situations and objects to deal with, with possibly complex semantics; physical interactions with humans that requires fine, low-latency control, representation and management of several mental models, pertinent situation assessment skills...the list goes on. This article sheds light on some key decisional issues that are to be tackled for a cognitive robot to share space and tasks with a human, and present our take on these challenges. We adopt a constructive approach based on the identification and the effective implementation of individual and collaborative skills. These cognitive abilities cover geometric reasoning and situation assessment mainly based on perspective-taking and affordances, management and exploitation of each agent (human and robot) knowledge in separate cognitive models, natural multi-modal communication, "human-aware" task planning, and human and robot interleaved plan achievement. We present our design choices, the articulations between the diverse deliberative components of the robot, experimental results, and eventually discuss the strengths and weaknesses of our approach. It appears that explicit knowledge management, both symbolic and geometric, proves to be key as it pushes for a different, more semantic way to address the decision-making issue in human-robot interactions.
