Computational model

Résumé

A computational model uses computer programs to simulate and study complex systems using an algorithmic or mechanistic approach and is widely used in a diverse range of fields spanning from physics, engineering, chemistry and biology to economics, psychology, cognitive science and computer science. The system under study is often a complex nonlinear system for which simple, intuitive analytical solutions are not readily available. Rather than deriving a mathematical analytical solution to the problem, experimentation with the model is done by adjusting the parameters of the system in the computer, and studying the differences in the outcome of the experiments. Operation theories of the model can be derived/deduced from these computational experiments. Examples of common computational models are weather forecasting models, earth simulator models, flight simulator models, molecular protein folding models, Computational Engineering Models (CEM), and neural network models. Dendritic Voltage Recordings Explain Paradoxical Synaptic Plasticity: A Modeling Study

Experiments have shown that the same stimulation pattern that causes Long-Term Potentiation in proximal synapses, will induce Long-Term Depression in distal ones. In order to understand these, and other, surprising observations we use a phenomenological model of Hebbian plasticity at the location of the synapse. Our model describes the Hebbian condition of joint activity of pre- and postsynaptic neurons in a compact form as the interaction of the glutamate trace left by a presynaptic spike with the time course of the postsynaptic voltage. Instead of simulating the voltage, we test the model using experimentally recorded dendritic voltage traces in hippocampus and neocortex. We find that the time course of the voltage in the neighborhood of a stimulated synapse is a reliable predictor of whether a stimulated synapse undergoes potentiation, depression, or no change. Our computational model can explain the existence of different -at first glance seemingly paradoxical- outcomes of synaptic potentiation and depression experiments depending on the dendritic location of the synapse and the frequency or timing of the stimulation.

Quantization of the parameters of a Perceptron is a central problem in hardware implementation of neural networks using a numerical technology. A neural model with each weight limited to a small integer range will require little surface of silicon. Moreover, according to Occam's razor principle, better generalization abilities can be expected from a simpler computational model. The price to pay for these benefits lies in the difficulty to train these kind of networks. This paper proposes essentially two new ideas for constructive training algorithms, and demonstrates their efficiency for the generation of feedforward networks composed of Boolean threshold gates with discrete weights. A proof of the convergence of these algorithms is given. Some numerical experiments have been carried out and the results are presented in terms of the size of the generated networks and of their generalization abilities.

A Neuro-Inspired Computational Model for a Visually Guided Robotic Lamprey Using Frame and Event Based Cameras

The computational load associated with computer vision is often prohibitive, and limits the capacity for on-board image analysis in compact mobile robots. Replicating the kind of feature detection and neural processing that animals excel at remains a challenge in most biomimetic aquatic robots. Event-driven sensors use a biologically inspired sensing strategy to eliminate the need for complete frame capture. Systems employing event-driven cameras enjoy reduced latencies, power consumption, bandwidth, and benefit from a large dynamic range. However, to the best of our knowledge, no work has been done to evaluate the performance of these devices in underwater robotics. This work proposes a robotic lamprey design capable of supporting computer vision, and uses this system to validate a computational neuron model for driving anguilliform swimming. The robot is equipped with two different types of cameras: frame-based and event-based cameras. These were used to stimulate the neural network, yielding goal-oriented swimming. Finally, a study is conducted comparing the performance of the computational model when driven by the two different types of camera. It was observed that event-based cameras improved the accuracy of swimming trajectories and led to significant improvements in the rate at which visual inputs were processed by the network.
