Error correction code

In computing, telecommunication, information theory, and coding theory, forward error correction (FEC) or channel coding is a technique used for controlling errors in data transmission over unreliable or noisy communication channels. The central idea is that the sender encodes the message in a redundant way, most often by using an error correction code or error correcting code (ECC). The redundancy allows the receiver not only to detect errors that may occur anywhere in the message, but often to correct a limited number of errors. Therefore a reverse channel to request re-transmission may not be needed. The cost is a fixed, higher forward channel bandwidth. The American mathematician Richard Hamming pioneered this field in the 1940s and invented the first error-correcting code in 1950: the Hamming (7,4) code. Gaussian channel transmission of images and audio files using cryptcoding

Random codes based on quasigroups (RCBQ) are cryptcodes, i.e. they are error-correcting codes, which provide information security. Cut-Decoding and 4-Sets-Cut-Decoding algorithms for these codes are defined elsewhere. Also, the performance of these codes for the transmission of text messages is investigated elsewhere. In this study, the authors investigate the RCBQ's performance with Cut-Decoding and 4-Sets-Cut-Decoding algorithms for transmission of images and audio files through a Gaussian channel. They compare experimental results for both coding/decoding algorithms and for different values of signal-to-noise ratio. In all experiments, the differences between the transmitted and decoded image or audio file are considered. Experimentally obtained values for bit-error rate and packet error rate and the decoding speed of both algorithms are compared. Also, two filters for enhancing the quality of the images decoded using RCBQ are proposed.

An Explicit Construction of Optimal Streaming Codes for Channels With Burst and Arbitrary Erasures

This paper presents a new construction of error correcting codes which achieves optimal recovery of a streaming source over a packet erasure channel. The channel model considered is the sliding-window erasure model, with burst and arbitrary losses, introduced by Badr et al. We present a simple construction, when the rate of the code is at least 1/2, which achieves optimal error correction in this setup. Our proposed construction is explicit and systematic. It uses off-the-shelf maximum distance separable (MDS) codes and maximum rank distance (MRD) Gabidulin block codes as constituent codes and combines them in a simple manner. This is in contrast to other recent works, where the construction involves a careful design of the generator or parity check matrix from first principles. The field size requirement which depends on the constituent MDS and MRD codes is also analyzed.

A Family of Fast Syndrome Based Cryptographic Hash Functions

Recently, some collisions have been exposed for a variety of cryptographic hash functions including some of the most widely used today. Many other hash functions using similar constructions can however still be considered secure. Nevertheless, this has drawn attention on the need for new hash function designs. In this article is presented a family of secure hash functions, whose security is directly related to the syndrome decoding problem from the theory of error-correcting codes. Taking into account the analysis by Coron and Joux based on Wagner's generalized birthday algorithm we study the asymptotical security of our functions. We demonstrate that this attack is always exponential in terms of the length of the hash value. We also study the work-factor of this attack, along with other attacks from coding theory, for non asymptotic range, i.e. for practical values. Accordingly, we propose a few sets of parameters giving a good security and either a faster hashing or a shorter description for the function.
