Maximum power transfer theorem

In electrical engineering, the maximum power transfer theorem states that, to obtain maximum external power from a power source with internal resistance, the resistance of the load must equal the resistance of the source as viewed from its output terminals. Moritz von Jacobi published the maximum power (transfer) theorem around 1840; it is also referred to as "Jacobi's law". The theorem results in maximum power transfer from the power source to the load, and not maximum efficiency of useful power out of total power consumed. If the load resistance is made larger than the source resistance, then efficiency increases (since a higher percentage of the source power is transferred to the load), but the magnitude of the load power decreases (since the total circuit resistance increases). If the load resistance is made smaller than the source resistance, then efficiency decreases (since most of the power ends up being dissipated in the source). Decentralized Optimal Projected Control of PV Inverters in Residential Microgrids

In this paper, we consider the problem of overvoltage arising in PV residential microgrids due to excessive power injection into the grid by the PV generators. We propose a decentralized optimal integral controller to curtail excess active power in order to avoid overvoltage. Considering the voltage and active power constraints, we show that the proposed controller leads to maximum power injection into the grid. We discuss the objective of fair power curtailment and show that it is in contrast with our objective of maximum power transfer. Finally, we present the performance of the controller through simulation studies.

Remotely-Powered Front-End at 2.45 GHz for Real-Time Continuous Temperature Sensing

Remote powering and power management of a passive sensor system employing antenna-rectifier co-design is presented. The operating frequency of the system is chosen at 2.45 GHz in order to reduce the antenna size. A co-design approach enables the coupling of the antenna and the rectifier for maximum power efficiency. The presented tag consists of an antenna, RF rectifier, power management circuit and a ring oscillator. Temperature sensing with the passive sensor system is demonstrated by the on-chip ring oscillator. The RF sensitivity of the integrated sensor system is -11.4 dBm while the average DC power consumption is measured as 25 mu W. The measurements prove the effectiveness of the method for maximum transfer efficiency and the use of ring-oscillator based temperature sensor for in-vivo temperature monitoring.

Proposal and Validation of Medium-Frequency Power Transformer Design Methodology

Power electronics is continuously evolving toward higher power densities. Consequently, volume, weight, and material reduction are becoming major design issues, which lead the research focus toward high/medium-frequency power conversion systems. This paper presents a direct and simple design methodology aimed at reaching the best medium-frequency power transformer solution for a given application. Besides maximum power loss or minimum volume requirements, the value of the leakage inductance is adjusted within the design methodology, essential for proper operation of most medium-frequency conversion systems. The proposed design methodology has been applied and experimentally verified on a small scale prototype.
