Interplay between the magnetic and electric degrees of freedom in multiferroic Co3TeO6

Neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and dielectric constant measurements of single-crystal Co3TeO6 have been measured to study the interplay between the ferroelectricity and magnetic order. Long-range incommensurate magnetic order develops below T-M1 = 26 K, which is followed by three additional zero-field phase transitions at T-M2 = 19.5 K, T-M3 = 18 K, and T-M4 = 16 K where the incommensurate order changes and commensurate order develops. In magnetic fields up to 14 T we find that the magnetic intensities and incommensurate wave vector are dramatically altered as ferroelectricity develops, with a fifth abrupt transition around 10 T. The overall behavior characterizes Co3TeO6 as a type-II multiferroic.

We present an experimental study of the two-dimensional S=1/2 square-lattice antiferromagnet Cu(pz)(2)(ClO4)(2) (pz denotes pyrazine-C4H4N2) using specific-heat measurements, neutron diffraction, and cold-neutron spectroscopy. The magnetic field dependence of the magnetic ordering temperature was determined from specific-heat measurements for fields perpendicular and parallel to the square-lattice planes, showing identical field-temperature phase diagrams. This suggest that spin anisotropies in Cu(pz)(2)(ClO4)(2) are small. The ordered antiferromagnetic structure is a collinear arrangement with the magnetic moments along either the crystallographic b or c axis. The estimated ordered magnetic moment at zero field is m(0)=0.47 (5)mu(B) and thus much smaller than the available single-ion magnetic moment. This is evidence for strong quantum fluctuations in the ordered magnetic phase of Cu(pz)(2)(ClO4)(2). Magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the square-lattice planes lead to an increase in the antiferromagnetically ordered moment to m(0)=0.93 (5)mu(B) at mu H-0= 13.5 T evidence that magnetic fields quench quantum fluctuations. Neutron spectroscopy reveals the presence of a gapped spin excitations at the antiferromagnetic zone center and it can be explained with a slightly anisotropic nearest-neighbor exchange coupling described by J(xy)(1)= 1.563 (13) meV and J(z)(1) = 0.9979(2)J(1)(xy).

Entanglement and manipulation of the magnetic and spin-orbit order in multiferroic Rashba semiconductors

Entanglement of the spin-orbit and magnetic order in multiferroic materials bears a strong potential for engineering novel electronic and spintronic devices. Here, we explore the electron and spin structure of ferroelectric alpha-GeTe thin films doped with ferromagnetic Mn impurities to achieve its multiferroic functionality. We use bulk-sensitive soft-X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) to follow hybridization of the GeTe valence band with the Mn dopants. We observe a gradual opening of the Zeeman gap in the bulk Rashba bands around the Dirac point with increase of the Mn concentration, indicative of the ferromagnetic order, at persistent Rashba splitting. Furthermore, subtle details regarding the spin-orbit and magnetic order entanglement are deduced from spin-resolved ARPES measurements. We identify antiparallel orientation of the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic polarization, and altering of the Rashba-type spin helicity by magnetic switching. Our experimental results are supported by first-principles calculations of the electron and spin structure.

Complex magnetoelectric effect in multiferroic composites: the case of PFN- PT/(Co,Ni)Fe2O4

We report a systematic study of the magnetoelectric (ME) voltage coefficient as a complex quantity in the particulate composite of ferroelectric solid solution 0.94Pb(Fe1/2N1/2)O-3-0.06PbTiO(3)(PFN-PT) with CoFe2O4(CFO) and NiFe2O4 (NFO) ferrites. The results show that the real part of the ME voltage coefficient (alpha') is highly influenced by the magnetostrictive phase through lambda(H). NFO produces larger alpha' at a lower magnetic field, which originates from the softer magnetic properties. In addition, alpha' was found to be positive for NFO composite, while CFO composite shows a negative ME voltage coefficient at high magnetic fields. We argue that the field dependence of alpha' can be interpreted using the dynamic piezomagnetic coefficient, q(ac) = partial derivative lambda(ac)/partial derivative H. The imaginary part of the ME voltage coefficient (alpha '') was also determined for all composites. Both the alpha' and alpha '' show a peak at the same magnetic field, which is attributed to the maximum dynamic piezomagnetism when the magnetic domains are collectively rotated by the dc bias magnetic field. Our results show that the ME voltage coefficient in the composites of PFN-PT/(Co,Ni)Fe2O4 is highly influenced by the content, magnetic softness and field dependence behaviour of magnetostriction of the piezomagnetic phase.
