Self-consistent simulation of plasma scenarios for ITER using a combination of 1.5D transport codes and free-boundary equilibrium codes

Self-consistent transport simulation of ITER scenarios is a very important tool for the exploration of the operational space and for scenario optimization. It also provides an assessment of the compatibility of developed scenarios (which include fast transient events) with machine constraints, in particular with the poloidal field coil system, heating and current drive, fuelling and particle and energy exhaust systems. This paper discusses results of predictive modelling of all reference ITER scenarios and variants using two suites of linked transport and equilibrium codes. The first suite consisting of the 1.5D core/2D SOL code JINTRAC (Wiesen S. et al 2008 JINTRAC-JET modelling suite JET ITC-Report) and the free-boundary equilibrium evolution code CREATE-NL (Albanese R. et al 2003 ISEM 2003 (Versailles, France); Albanese R. et al 2004 Nucl. Fusion 44 999), was mainly used to simulate the inductive D-T reference Scenario-2 with fusion gain Q = 10 and its variants in H, D and He (including ITER scenarios with reduced current and toroidal field). The second suite of codes was used mainly for the modelling of hybrid and steady-state ITER scenarios. It combines the 1.5D core transport code CRONOS (Artaud J.F. et al 2010 Nucl. Fusion 50 043001) and the free-boundary equilibrium evolution code DINA-CH (Kim S.H. et al 2009 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 51 105007).

It has been observed experimentally that magnetically confined plasmas, characterised by the safety factor q with a small or slightly inverted magnetic shear, have good confinement properties. Such plasmas typically have no internal transport barrier, operate with q95 around 4 and are good candidates for long pulse operation at high fusion yield in the reactor ITER. These hybrid scenarios are an intermediate step between the reference standard H-mode (high confinement) scenario with monotonic q and inductive current, and advanced scenarios with strongly reversed magnetic shear in which the entire plasma current is ideally generated non-inductively. This thesis focuses on the study of the dynamics of hybrid plasmas, with weak or almost zero magnetic shear, in tokamak and Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) configurations, when q in the central region assumes values close to one (tokamaks) or to a rational number (tokamaks, RFPs), though the exact resonance is avoided. The first part of this thesis is focused on the study of tokamak and RFP equilibria with slightly reversed shear when an extremum in the safety factor is close to a low order rational. These equilibria are characterised by the possible presence of internal helical cores, although the plasma edge is symmetric in the toroidal direction. Such 3D structures can be understood as the result of the nonlinear saturation of ideal MHD modes. The amplitude of large scale m=1 helical displacements in tokamak and RFP plasmas is investigated using contrasting approaches, namely 3D equilibrium and non-linear stability codes. The non-linear amplitude of such saturated modes obtained with the stability code is compared both with the helical core structure resulting from equilibrium numerical calculations, and with analytic predictions which extend the nonlinear treatment of reversed q plasmas to arbitrary toroidal mode numbers. A preliminary study of the impact of a n=1 RMP on the equilibrium helical distorsion is also presented. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the analytical and numerical study of the stability of an initially axisymetric tokamak configuration when the safety factor is almost flat and very close to a rational value over a macroscopically extended region in the plasma centre. Such conditions typically occur either in hybrid scenarios or following reconnection of a global instability such as a sawtooth. This configuration is characterised by non-negligible coupling between a fundamental mode and its Fourier adjacent modes. A dispersion relation has been derived both for ideal and resistive modes, with additional non-MHD effects such as plasma diamagnetism, viscosity and equilibrium velocity flows. The analytical results show that the resistive sidebands coupled to a core kink-like mode exhibit extremely fast growth, though additional non-MHD effects tend to moderately reduce the extreme growth rate of the resistive modes. The existence of such modes has been confirmed numerically, where the sensitivity of the growth rate to changes in resistivity and two-fluid effects has been demonstrated, and thus in turn provides generally good agreement with the analytical theory developed. A family of modes are obtained, including modes with novel scaling against plasma resistivity, some of which rotate in the electron diamagnetic direction, and others in the ion diamagnetic direction, consistent with experimental observations in e.g. TCV during hybrid-like operation.

Progress, since the ITER Physics Basis publication (ITER Physics Basis Editors et al 1999 Nucl. Fusion 39 2137-2664), in understanding the processes that will determine the properties of the plasma edge and its interaction with material elements in ITER is described. Experimental areas where significant progress has taken place are energy transport in the scrape-off layer (SOL) in particular of the anomalous transport scaling, particle transport in the SOL that plays a major role in the interaction of diverted plasmas with the main-chamber material elements, edge localized mode (ELM) energy deposition on material elements and the transport mechanism for the ELM energy from the main plasma to the plasma facing components, the physics of plasma detachment and neutral dynamics including the edge density profile structure and the control of plasma particle content and He removal, the erosion of low- and high-Z materials in fusion devices, their transport to the core plasma and their migration at the plasma edge including the formation of mixed materials, the processes determining the size and location of the retention of tritium in fusion devices and methods to remove it and the processes determining the efficiency of the various fuelling methods as well as their development towards the ITER requirements. This experimental progress has been accompanied by the development of modelling tools for the physical processes at the edge plasma and plasma-materials interaction and the further validation of these models by comparing their predictions with the new experimental results. Progress in the modelling development and validation has been mostly concentrated in the following areas: refinement in the predictions for ITER with plasma edge modelling codes by inclusion of detailed geometrical features of the divertor and the introduction of physical effects, which can play a major role in determining the divertor parameters at the divertor for ITER conditions such as hydrogen radiation transport and neutral-neutral collisions, modelling of the ion orbits at the plasma edge, which can play a role in determining power deposition at the divertor target, models for plasma-materials and plasma dynamics interaction during ELMs and disruptions, models for the transport of impurities at the plasma edge to describe the core contamination by impurities and the migration of eroded materials at the edge plasma and its associated tritium retention and models for the turbulent processes that determine the anomalous transport of energy and particles across the SOL. The implications for the expected performance of the reference regimes in ITER, the operation of the ITER device and the lifetime of the plasma facing materials are discussed.

A comprehensive study of electrostatic turbulence and transport in the laboratory basic plasma physics device TORPEX

TORPEX is a toroidal device located at the CRPP-EPFL in Lausanne. In TORPEX, a vertical magnetic field superposed on a toroidal field creates helicoidal field lines with both ends terminating on the torus vessel. The turbulence driven by magnetic curvature and plasma gradients causes plasma transport in the radial direction while at the same time plasma is progressively lost along the field lines. The relatively simple magnetic geometry and diagnostic access of the TORPEX configuration facilitate the experimental study of low frequency instabilities and related turbulent transport, and make an accurate comparison between simulations and experiments possible. We first present a detailed investigation of electrostatic interchange turbulence, associated structures and their effect on plasma using high-resolution diagnostics of plasma parameters and wave fields throughout the whole device cross-section, fluid models and numerical simulations. Interchange modes nonlinearly develop blobs, radially propagating filaments of enhanced plasma pressure. Blob velocities and sizes are obtained from probe measurements using pattern recognition and are described by an analytical expression that includes ion polarization currents, parallel sheath currents and ion-neutral collisions. Then, we describe recent advances of a non-perturbative Li 6+ miniaturized ion source and a detector for the investigation of the interaction between supra thermal ions and interchange–driven turbulence. We present first measurements of the spatial and energy space distribution of the fast ion beam in different plasma scenarios, in which the plasma turbulence is fully characterized. The experiments are interpreted using two-dimensional fluid simulations describing the low-frequency interchange turbulence, taking into account the plasma source and plasma losses at the torus vessel. By treating fast ions as test particles, we integrate their equations of motion in the simulated electromagnetic fields, and we compare their time-averaged and statistical properties with experimental data. Finally, we discuss future developments including the possibility of closing the magnetic field lines and of performing magnetic reconnection experiments.
