Preparation of Magnetic Tubular Nanoreactors for Highly Efficient Catalysis

We report an efficient and controllable route to prepare magnetic tubular nanoreactors composed of a mesoporous SiO2 shell with iron-noble metal nanoparticles inside. The key of this method is to design and fabricate Fe nanoparticles encapsulated in a mesoporous SiO2 shell. Making use of a galvanic replacement reaction between Fe and noble metal ions, all of the noble metal nanoparticles are loaded inside the mesoporous SiO2 shell, and thus nanoreactors are formed. Taking Pd as an example, the prepared Pd-Fe@meso-SiO2 tubular nanoreactor exhibits a high catalytic activity and excellent reusability for styrene hydrogenation under mild conditions. This study provides a facile route to fabricate magnetic nanoreactors with enhanced catalytic properties.

The design and synthesis of nanostructured hydrogen oxidation reaction electrocatalysts for hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells

Hydrogen fuel cell is a promising green technology that transforms the chemical energy in hydrogen into electricity. Currently, most of the efforts are focused on developing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), however they are heavily dependent on rare and expensive platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts. In contrast, hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells (HEMFCs) work in alkaline media, thus allow the use of cheaper and more abundant non-PGM catalysts. However, there is no materials found suitable to catalyze the anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). Therefore, developing new, active and robust HOR catalysts in alkaline media is of paramount importance. Hereby, this dissertation presented my recent research works on preparation, characterization, and application of HOR catalysts for HEMFCs.Chapter 2 described the exploration of new earth-abundant HOR catalysts. A series of Ni-based compounds were synthesized and tested for HOR, among which Ni3N had the best activity. With further nano-engineering, the mass activity reached the highest at the time reported and the oxidation resistance of the supported version can be significantly improved. Spectroscopic evidence suggested that the downshift of the metal d band weakened the binding energies of the catalyst toward adsorbates, which accounted for the improved activity and stability of Ni3N/C.Chapter 3 demonstrated how to exploit strain-engineering for HOR catalysis. A series of Ni/C composites were prepared by pyrolyzing a Ni-based metal-organic framework (MOF). The optimal catalyst, Ni-H2-2%, has the highest mass activity (at the time reported) and abnormal high intrinsic activity. Characterizations using synchrotron XRD suggested that it was the distinct but relative optimal strain level of Ni-H2-2% that rendered it high activity.Chapter 4 is a complicated version of Chapter 3. The Ni catalysts were also prepared from the same Ni-based MOF with more complex synthesis conditions. The best catalyst, Ni-H2-NH3, possessed highest intrinsic activity among non-precious metals. Combining UPS, H2 chemisorption, isotopic studies, and electrochemical characterizations, the balanced hydrogen binding energy (HBE) and hydroxide binding energy (OHBE) is likely to be the origin of the high activity of Ni-H2-NH3. In the end, MEA measurements confirmed its excellent performance: for non-PGM MEA, the peak power density could reach 488 mW/cm2, 6.4 times higher than the previous record, which demonstrates the feasibility of efficient PGM-free HEMFCs.Chapter 5 exploited the interaction between PGMs and carbon support to improve their HOR activity. A porous N-doped carbon (pN-C) support was found to have prominent enhancement effect toward PGMs. Especially, the Pt0.25Ru0.75/pN-C had the up-to-date highest mass activity and intrinsic activity toward HOR. Using characterizations including XPS, UPS, H2 chemisorption, CO chemisorption, in situ surface-enhanced infrared adsorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS), and electrochemical characterizations, we concluded the superior HOR activity of Pt0.25Ru0.75/pN-C was a combination of interactions between Pt, Ru and the pN-C, with modulated the HBE and strengthened the H2O binding strength. The HEMFC using Pt0.25Ru0.75/pN-C also possessed great performance that far exceeded the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) 2022 target for HEMFCs, even though the testing condition was harsher. This work demonstrated the feasibility of HEMFC replacing PEMFC.

Revealing the Surface Chemistry for CO2 Hydrogenation on Cu/CeO2–x Using Near-Ambient-Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Catalytic reduction of CO2 to valuable products is an attractive route for CO2 recycling. CeO2-supported Cu catalysts have shown high activity and selectivity for the hydrogenation of CO2 to CO. To uncover the origin of their high performance, we prepared a practical and well-defined model of Cu/CeO2–x catalysts with Cu nanoparticles dispersed on a CeO2–x support. We studied the structure and catalytic activity of the practical catalyst and the evolution of the active phase and surface intermediates using near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) over the model catalyst under CO2 hydrogenation conditions. For both model and practical catalysts, metallic copper and partially reduced ceria with oxygen vacancies were found to be active sites for the reduction of CO2 to CO. Over the model catalyst, partial covering of Cu by CeO2–x and diffusion of Cu into CeO2–x was observed, suggesting that a strong interaction between Cu and CeO2–x was favored during CO2 hydrogenation. The surface analysis results indicated that the CO2 hydrogenation proceeded through the following steps: activation of CO2 in the form of carbonate on the surface of CeO2–x, hydrogenation of carbonate to formate on the surface of Cu by the dissociated H2, and conversion of formate to CO. This work provides direct experimental evidence on the surface properties of Cu and ceria during the RWGS reaction and the activation and hydrogenation processes of CO2 over the Cu/CeO2–x surface for a high RWGS catalytic performance.

Galvanic replacement reactions of Ga and In with Cu for the synthesis of bimetallic nanoparticles

The need for efficient and selective catalysts, capable of driving important conversions to build a more sustainable society, encourages the development of synthetic approaches towards new nanomaterials. Cu-based bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) promise to fulfill this gap by selectively producing energy-dense products via CO2 electroreduction (CO2RR). However, as small variations in its composition and configuration can enormously affect the catalyst performance, the vast diversity of bimetallic NPs challenges systematic catalyst evaluation. Colloidal bimetallic NPs serve as an ideal platform for the exploration of composition-configuration-property relationships, necessary for rational catalyst design. Although an extensive library of noble metal bimetallic NPs exists, much less has been done regarding non-noble Cu-based bimetallic NPs despite their potential as catalysts for CO2RR. The aim of this thesis is to advance in the synthesis of Cu-based NPs, with focus on Cu-Ga and Cu-In, which have been predicted or demonstrated to possess interesting catalytic properties.The thesis starts with an introduction on bimetallic NPs and the different colloidal approaches to synthesize them. Galvanic replacement reactions (GRRs) are discussed more in details, as they are the synthetic approach of choice for the Cu-Ga and Cu-In NPs. Ga and In belong to a family of liquid metals; thus, information on their general properties is also provided. The first two experimental chapters focus on the reactivity and surface chemistry of Ga NPs. Chapter 3 demonstrates that Ga NPs react with a copper-amine complex to form anisotropic Cu-Ga nanodimers (NDs). Mechanistic studies reveal that a GRR takes place. Yet, the ND morphology differs from the more typical hollow core@shell structures obtained from GRRs. This unusual morphology is attributed to the liquid nature of Ga NPs and to the presence of a native oxide shell. This discovery fostered a follow up study, which is discussed in Chapter 4. The effect of the chemical nature of the capping ligand on the oxide thickness and reactivity of the Ga NPs is investigated. The thickness of the oxide skin is found to greatly depend on the ligands. Specifically, amines and carboxylic acids promote thicker oxide shells while thiols and phosphines hinder its growth. The reaction between Ga NPs with different oxide thickness and the copper precursor leads to a surprising result, while thicker oxides cause the formation of NDs, isolated Cu NPs form with thinner oxides.Chapter 5 turns towards Cu-In NPs. Following the same synthetic scheme, In NPs with different sizes are exploited as sacrificial seeds for the GRR. Cu-In NPs with an unprecedented variety of morphologies and elemental distributions are obtained: spherical Cu11In9 intermetallic and patchy phase-segregated Cu-In NPs, as well as Cu-Cu11In9 and Cu-In NDs. Segregation of the two metals occurs as the GRR progresses, with time or with higher copper precursor concentration. Comparing the obtained results with the Cu-In phase diagram reveals that the bigger seeds stabilize the bulk-like Cu-Cu11In9 configuration before their complete segregation into Cu-In NDs. Aiding in the development of more predictive synthetic approaches.Finally, Chapter 6 concludes by summarizing the significance of the achievements, which advance the knowledge on underexplored bimetallic NPs and on the GRR when applied beyond noble metals. An outlook on future developments is also provided.
