Optical properties of size selected neutral Ag clusters: electronic shell structures and the surface plasmon resonance

We present optical absorption spectra from the ultraviolet to the visible for size selected neutral Ag-n clusters (n = 5-120) embedded in solid Ne. We compare the spectra to time-dependent density functional calculations (TDDFT) that address the influence of the Ne matrix. With increasing size, several highly correlated electron excitations gradually develop into a single surface plasmon. Its energy is situated between 3.9 and 4.1 eV and varies with size according to the spherical electronic shell model. The plasmon energy is highest for clusters with atom numbers fully filling states with the lowest radial quantum number (e.g. 1s, 1p, 1d,...). TDDFT calculations for clusters with several candidate geometrical structures embedded in Ne show excellent agreement with the experimental data, demonstrating that the absorption bands depend only weakly on the exact structure of the cluster.

Optical absorption of small copper clusters in neon: Cu-n, (n=1-9)

We present optical absorption spectra in the UV-visible range (1.6 eV < omega < 5.5 eV) of mass selected neutral copper clusters Cu-n(n = 1-9) embedded in a solid neon matrix at 7 K. The atom and the dimer have already been measured in neon matrices, while the absorption spectra for sizes between Cu-3 and Cu-9 are entirely (n = 6-9) or in great part new. They show a higher complexity and a larger number of transitions distributed over the whole energy range compared to similar sizes of silver clusters. The experimental spectra are compared to the time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) implemented in the TURBOMOLE package. The analysis indicates that for energies larger than 3 eV the transitions are mainly issued from d-type states; however, the TD-DFT scheme does not reproduce well the detailed structure of the absorption spectra. This thesis is devoted to the study of the optical properties of small metal clusters and metal cluster organic compounds. For this purpose a ultra-high vacuum (UHV) experimental apparatus has been built which allows for the deposition of mass selected neutral clusters in a size range up to 16,000 amu which corresponds to Ag150 or Au80. Cluster cations are produced in a gas aggregation cluster source, steered in an ion optics device and co-deposited with electrons and excess rare gas on a cryogenic deposition head. Neutral mono dispersed clusters are analyzed by optical absorption, fluorescence and excitation spectroscopy in the UV-visible energy range. A novel custom-made conical octupole combined to an organic molecule injector has been built, serving as a generator of metal cluster-organic compounds. These are atomically precise model systems which permit to study surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in order to test the theoretical models and better understand the mechanism of SERS. Optical absorption on size-selected silver clusters of Agn (n= 20 â 120) embedded in neon solid matrix was investigated. The spectra show plasmon-like absorption profiles around a photon energy of 4.0 eV which match in energy molecular like absorption spectra for the smallest Ag clusters but are sensitively higher than what would be expected for the dipolar absorption for bulk silver of about 3.3 eV. The central absorption peak, i.e. the plasmon energy as a function of cluster size is presented. The data fall in a transition between a blueshift of the plasmon resonance with decreasing size to a superimposed red shift for the very smallest sizes. Superimposed, we observe a distinct structure where clusters with atom number of 8,18,34,58,92 show a localized maximum value of the plasmon energy. These numbers correspond perfectly to the fully filled states of 1p, 1d, 1f, 1g and 1h according to the electronic shell model, manifesting a clear sub-shell effect. Optical absorption, fluorescence and excitation spectroscopy on size-selected small gold clusters of Aum (m= 19,20,21) embedded in solid neon were measured. These are the first optical data on ligand free neutral atomically precise Au clusters. Au20, the famous tetraedic structure, shows a rich structured absorption spectrum, superimposed on a continuous background increasing to the UV part of the spectrum. Au21 and Au19 show the same tendency, however without any superimposed structure. Very interestingly, all three Au clusters show strong fluorescence centered at around 1.85 eV, here again Au20 being the prominent species. Comparison to ligand protected Au clusters clearly proves that the fluorescence comes from the Au cluster itself and is only weakly influenced by the ligands. For the first time, size-selected small metal-organic compounds of silver-pyridine AgaPyb (a= 1,3; b= 1,2) which are prototypes for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) have been produced and isolated in a solid Ne matrix. Optical absorption and fluorescence spectra have been measured. Raman scattering cross sections with an enhancement factor of 103 have been found in fair agreement with recent high level time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations.

Electronic Transport in 2D Materials with Strong Spin-orbit Coupling

The thesis describes the computational study of structural, electonic and transport properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) in the stable 2H and the metastable 1T' phases. Several aspects have been covered by the study including the electronic properties of the topological quantum spin Hall (QSH) state in the 1T' monolayer phase as well as the effects of strain, periodic line defects, interfaces and edges of monolayer TMDs. The electronic properties of the bulk monolayer phases were described by the ab-initio density functional theory framework while the electronic and transport properties of 1D defects were calculated using the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. A specific focus was made on the transport of spin-polarized charge carriers across line defects in the monolayer 2H phase. Subject to energy, pseudomomentum and spin conservation, the size of the transport gap is governed by both bulk properties of a material and symmetries of a line defect. Outside the transport gap energy region, the charge carriers are discriminated with respect to their spin resulting in the spin polarization of the transmitted current. Next, the properties of the metastable monolayer 1T' phase were studied. The presence of a sufficiently large band gap is crucial to observe the QSH phase in the family of materials by probing the topological boundary states. The meV-order band gaps of the 1T' phase of monolayer TMDs were found to be sensitive to materials' lattice constants suggesting the control of the band gap size by strain. In particular, the electronic band structure and the size of the band gap in monolayer 1T'-WSe2 were found to be in agreement with spectroscopy studies. The topologically protected states at the edges of the monolayer 1T' phase as well as at the boundaries between the topological 1T' phase and the trivial 2H phase of monolayer TMDs were studied. Specific atomic structure configurations were suggested to observe experimentally the topological protection of the charge carrier transport against back-scattering. Finally, in the context of lateral semiconducting device engineering, the electronic and transverse transport properties of 2H-1T' phase boundaries as well as the dimerization defects in the 1T' phase were investigated. Both kinds of defects considered exhibit a relatively large transmission probability for the charge carriers crossing the defects. However, the differences between the shapes of bulk bands of the two phases open a sizeable transport gap for charge carriers crossing periodic domain boundaries between the monolayer 2H and 1T' phases. The calculated formation energies of dimerization defects were found to be relatively low suggesting their high concentration in real samples of monolayer 1T'-TMDs. Additionally, the thesis includes studies of magnetic dopants on the surface of Bi2Te3 and atomic vacancies in monolayer 2H-MoSe2 where the electronic properties of point defects were calculated and compared to experimental results. The two possible adsorption sites of Fe on the surface of Bi2Te3 both show a large out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy in agreement with experiments. The calculated local electronic properties of Se vacancies in monolayer 2H-MoSe2 show the presence of in-gap states which are not observed in experiment. Nevertheless, the combination of theoretical and experimental scanning tunneling microscopy images allowed the unambiguous identification of the vacancy defect.
