Stiffness Perception of Virtual Objects Using FOLDAWAY-Touch

Haptic human interfaces are nowadays becoming more and more diffused also thanks to their combined use with Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality (VR & AR). Although many research platforms explore kinesthetic interaction with virtual objects, the only feedback available in widespread commercial devices is a rather simple vibration. In this paper we introduce “FOLDWAY-Touch” a novel portable kinesthetic haptic interface whose technology can be easily integrated into hand-held devices. The key technological aspect is the miniaturization of the haptic mechanism achieved through the use of origami design and manufacturing principles. Another achievement of this paper is the use of FOLDAWAY-Touch in a virtual simulation to grasp objects with different levels of stiffness.

Head Mounted Wind

Within the context of tele-presence and immersion for piloting light aircraft, knowledge about the surrounding wind offers useful information for piloting purposes. Rendering wind in virtual simulation or tele-presence application has been used still the early sixties [ ] to enhance immersion. However since then it has been rather limited to use a fan in front of the user to produce an illusion of speed. This paper presents the development of a new haptic device generating wind around the user head. The system is based on an embedded system driving 8 fan actuators regularly distributed around a Head Mounted Display (HMD). In order to validate the added value of the device in the context of tele-operation, an application has been developed around a flight simulator where wind direction and forces are passed to the user via our system. Feedback from the different users of the applications shows improvements of the immersion inside the simulation. It also gives reliable information about the wind direction and forces using the most natural cues.

Haptic glove for virtual reality using magneto-rheological fluid actuators

As computer technologies improve year by year, advanced and intuitive user interfaces become increasingly necessary to allow proper manipulation of various types of programs, in different fields and markets. In the case of haptic glove devices, a fraction of the fields that come to mind are rehabilitation after injury, training simulations to learn particular movements or even allowing surgeons to operate on a patient on the other side of the globe. The aim of this project is to design a haptic glove that is lightweight, simple, easy to manipulate while still being precise enough to perform as a user interface for virtual reality systems or any other applications it may have. Our system uses magneto-rheological actuators that act as breaks, while the transmission of these breaking forces from the actuators to the fingertips is achieved by a lightweight wire-based mechanism. The whole system is attached onto a glove to make it easy to wear and transport.

Soft haptic device to render the sensation of flying like a drone

Haptic feedback located on the torso is proposed to enhance the state awareness of a user in virtual reality or during teleoperation while leaving the hands free for manipulation and communication. We provide haptic feedback on the torso by compressing a set of closed air pouches against the skin in order to render the sensation of air pressure when piloting a drone. The pouch devices are cable-driven and integrated in a wearable soft exoskeleton, called the FlyJacket. A mechanical model and simulation of a pouch device were developed in order to determine appropriate parameters, including the air pouch inner pressure, its attachment point, and the cable position. Using the simulation results, a set of pouch devices were constructed and integrated into the soft exoskeleton on both sides of the upper chest and middle of the back. The mechanical performance of the constructed device is close to that predicted by the simulation. Application of the haptic device in a flight task in which the user controls a drone using upper body movements was demonstrated with a user study. Adding haptic feedback during a stabilization task reduced the user's workload and improved the state awareness of the user.
