Connection between diphoton and triboson channels in new physics searches

Diphoton channel provides a clean signature in searches for new physics. In this paper, we discuss a connection between the diphoton channel ( γγ ) and triboson channels ( Zγγ , ZZγ , WWγ ) imposed by the SU(2)L×U(1)Y symmetry of the Standard Model (SM) in certain classes of models. To illustrate this idea we choose a simple model that has all these channels. In this model, the same physics can give rise to γ+MET instead of γγ and 2 bosons plus missing energy instead of 3-boson channels. We analyze existing constraints and previous searches and show that channels WWγ and especially Zγ+MET have a potential to discover new physics at the LHC.

Higgs boson mass and new physics

We discuss the lower Higgs boson mass bounds which come from the absolute stability of the Standard Model (SM) vacuum and from the Higgs inflation, as well as the prediction of the Higgs boson mass coming from the asymptotic safety of the SM. We account for the three-loop renormalization group evolution of the couplings of the SM and for a part of the two-loop corrections that involve the QCD coupling alpha(s) to the initial conditions for their running. This is one step beyond the current state-of-the-art procedure ("one-loop matching-two-loop running"). This results in a reduction of the theoretical uncertainties in the Higgs boson mass bounds and predictions, associated with the SM physics, to 1-2GeV. We find that with the account of existing experimental uncertainties in the mass of the top quark and alpha(s) (taken at the 2 sigma level) the bound reads M-H >= M-min (equality corresponds to the asymptotic-safety prediction), where M-min = (129 +/- 6) GeV. We argue that the discovery of the SM Higgs boson in this range would be in agreement with the hypothesis of the absence of new energy scales between the Fermi and Planck scales, whereas the coincidence of M-H with M-min would suggest that the electroweak scale is determined by Planck physics. In order to clarify the relation between the Fermi and Planck scales a construction of an electron-positron or muon collider with a center-of-mass energy similar to (200 + 200 GeV) (Higgs and t-quark factory) would be needed.

Towards the ultimate SM fit to close in on Higgs physics

With the discovery of the Higgs at the LHC, experiments have finally addressed all aspects of the Standard Model (SM). At this stage, it is important to understand which windows for beyond the SM (BSM) physics are still open, and which are instead tightly closed. We address this question by parametrizing BSM effects with dimension-six operators and performing a global fit to the SM. We separate operators into different groups constrained at different levels, and provide independent bounds on their Wilson coefficients taking into account only the relevant experiments. Our analysis allows to assert in a model-independent way where BSM effects can appear in Higgs physics. In particular, we show that deviations from the SM in the differential distributions of h -> V (f) over bar f are related to other observables, such as triple gauge-boson couplings, and are then already constrained by present data. On the contrary, BR(h -> Z gamma) can still hide large deviations from the SM.

Leading effects beyond the standard model

Using the predictive power of the effective field theory approach, we present a physical parametrization of the leading effects beyond the standard model (BSM), which gives us at present the best way to constrain heavy new physics at low energies. We show that other BSM effects are not independent from these ones, and we provide the explicit correlations. This information is useful to know where to primarily look for new physics in future experiments, and to know how this new physics is related to previous measurements, most importantly in electroweak symmetry breaking processes or Higgs physics.
