Peculiarities of second harmonic generation with chirped femtosecond pulses at high conversion efficiency

Résumé

Frequency doubling of an infrared laser radiation in non-linear optical crystals is a widely used technique to obtain light in the visible range. The second harmonic generation process is influenced by several well-known parameters. In this article we study the effect of group delay dispersion on the second harmonic generation process for femtosecond pulses. We show, both through simulation and experiments, that for certain parameters even a small amount of chirp can have a detrimental effect on the conversion efficiency as well as the second harmonic beam quality. We also check the effect of higher order dispersion. By properly accounting for those effects the crystal length and focusing conditions can be optimized to reach high conversion efficiency, while maintaining low sensitivity to chirp variations and good beam quality.

Many molecule bonds have vibration frequencies in the mid-infrared band. Thus, this band is of great interest to molecular spectroscopy, material processing and medical applications. However, many optical materials typically used for laser sources experience high losses due to the presence of such vibration bonds making the design of mid-infrared coherent sources challenging. Such task is even more difficult when considering designing all-fiber sources which offer additional compactness and robustness. The goal of this project is to address such challenge by designing all-fiber mid-infrared sources based on chalcogenide fibers and nonlinear effects. Using degenerated parametric conversion of a 2 um pump and a telecom band signal laser, one can generate an idler in the mid-infrared band. As a first step, the linear and nonlinear performances of several chalcogenide fibers were compared. The results prove the chalcogenide photonic crystal fiber design to be the ideal platform for this project as it offers high nonlinearity and low loss. Numerical simulations provide further improvement of photonic crystal geometry. Our improved designs allow for an extreme shaping of the dispersion to optimize the four-wave-mixing process within the thulium /holmium fiber laser band. In the meantime, several cavity configurations were tested to boost the thulium/holmium laser performance, that are required for pumping of our chalcogenide fibers. Polarizer-free cavity designs result more compact laser footprint, which moreover enables a higher slope efficiency. Such lasers enable precise measurements of sample fiber optical parameters. The combined efforts on fiber and laser optimization leads to efficient continuous-wave parametric conversion. Thanks to the excellent mid-infrared transmittance of chalcogenide glass, this high efficiency can be extended to longer pumps in mid-infrared. However, fiber fuse, a result of heat dissipative solitons, is the main constrain for reaching better conversion efficiency. For ultrafast applications, a sub-cm length chalcogenide photonic crystal fiber generates flat-top, linearly chirped supercontinuum in the normal dispersion region. This pulse length could be compressed to two optical cycles by linear compression. Once again, the experimental results match perfectly with the simulations. Overall, we show in this thesis that chalcogenide PCFs are promising for highly efficient and low threshold nonlinear optics in the middle infrared, offering new options for light generation in this critical wavelength band.

Exploring nonlinearities in multimode optical fibers for lasers and computing

Multimode optical fibers are the backbone of telecommunication and medical imaging. When light with high intensity travels through a multimode fiber, photons and matter start to interact and propa-gation becomes nonlinear. The nonlinear propagation of light results in variations in the spatial and temporal distribution of the light. Therefore, at the end of the fiber spatial distribution of the light and/or its wavelength changes.In this thesis, nonlinear interactions in multimode fiber are explored and controlled for laser, compu-ting and machine learning applications. Novel approaches for scalable energy-efficient optical compu-ting, learning, and controlling nonlinear dynamics with machine learning tools, ultrashort pulse gener-ation with superior beam qualities, high peak power and stability are demonstrated.Firstly, high-power ultrashort pulse generation in multimode laser cavities is explored. By studying pulse dynamics, significant improvements are achieved and near-single mode output beam profiles are demonstrated. Later, a novel all-fiber laser design is presented to achieve stable ultrashort pulses with a compact and low-cost laser cavity. In the second half of this thesis, machine learning tools are uti-lized to acquire the relation between the nonlinear frequency generation and the initial excitation of the multimode fibers to create tunable frequency sources. Advanced artificial neural network designs are implemented to learn nonlinear light propagation in multimode fibers to replace time consuming conventional simulations. Finally, the nonlinear interactions shaping the propagating beam distribu-tion are employed to process information to perform optical computing with multimode fibers.Multimode fibers are an ideal testbed to investigate complex nonlinear dynamics in nature. We be-lieve the demonstrated applications and the achieved results are just a subset of the capabilities of the optical fiber. These approaches can be used as a steppingstone to demonstrate advanced applica-tions with light.

Industrial laser precision machining is predominately based on pulsed Nd:YAG lasers operated at a wavelength of 1.06 µm in a free running pulse regime. The objective of this thesis work has been to investigate second and third harmonic generation for such "long pulse" Nd:YAG lasers. Visible and UV radiation can be better focused. The absorption coefficient at these wavelengths is higher in most materials. Processing at the doubled or tripled frequency increases machining precision and allows processing of new classes of materials such as, e.g., high reflective metals or ceramics. Frequency doubling and tripling of Q-switched, modelocked, or CW operated Nd:YAG lasers has been the subject of numerous publications. However, the particular problems associated with the free running pulse regime have not yet been addressed. The generation of harmonics requires a laser source that can deliver radiation with high brightness. A system based on a slab crystal with a beam quality factor of M2 ≈ 1.6 and a power of up to 1.5 kW has been used in the experiments. An external electro-optical switch has been implemented in order to precisely control the laser pulse shape and duration. The non-linear coefficient and the angular acceptance have been the main criteria for selecting LBO (LiB3O5), KTP (KTiOPO4), and MgO:LiNbO3 for the frequency conversion experiments. The conversion efficiency has been measured for these crystals as a function of the intensity at the fundamental wavelength. In contrast to simple model predictions, the efficiency does not increase linearly with intensity under long pulse conditions. An intensity dependant phase mismatch is at the origin of the deviations. A heuristic model for the efficiency prediction has been developed. It is based on a linear increase of phase mismatch with intensity and it allows describing the experimental findings with sufficient accuracy. The conversion efficiency for frequency doubling is limited to about 20% at pulse durations of 100 µsec. It decreases with increasing pulse duration. Catastrophic thermal damage is at the origin of the limitation in this pulse regime. Our experiments indicate that the damage is initiated by the frequency doubled light. Temporary color centers are created in the presence of the second harmonic light. The dynamic of the creation and annihilation of these centers has been investigated. It could be shown that finally the absorption of the fundamental harmonic (infrared) radiation at these centers results in irreversible thermal damages. A power of 140 W in the second harmonic (178 MW/cm2 on a waist of 5 µm) and 12 W in the third harmonic (61 MW/cm2 in a waist of 2.5 µm) was obtained with pulses of 200 µs. This allowed to demonstrate the feasibility of material processing with very high reproducibility and definition, which for instance allowed the design and the manufacturing of micro-grippers and several other prototypes in the field of robotics and micro-engineering.
