Sont apparentés aux tunnels par leur mode de construction les grands ouvrages hydrauliques souterrains, tels que les aqueducs, collecteurs et émissaires destinés soit à l'amenée, soit à l'évacuation des eaux des grands centres et certaines conduites établies en liaison avec les barrages et usines hydro-électriques.
Holland TunnelLe Holland Tunnel, autrefois connu sous le nom de Hudson River Vehicular Tunnel ou de Canal Street Tunnel, est un des deux tunnels autoroutiers qui traversent l'Hudson pour relier l'île de Manhattan (ville de New York) à Jersey City (New Jersey), sur le continent. L'autre tunnel est le Lincoln Tunnel. Construit entre 1920 et 1927, le tunnel a été baptisé du nom de l'ingénieur en chef responsable des travaux, Clifford Milburn Holland (1883 - 1924), mort avant l'achèvement de l'ouvrage.
Tunnel warfareTunnel warfare involves war being conducted in tunnels and other underground cavities. It often includes the construction of underground facilities (mining or undermining) in order to attack or defend, and the use of existing natural caves and artificial underground facilities for military purposes. Tunnels can be used to undermine fortifications and slip into enemy territory for a surprise attack, while it can strengthen a defense by creating the possibility of ambush, counterattack and the ability to transfer troops from one portion of the battleground to another unseen and protected.
