Benzylammonium‐Mediated Formamidinium Lead Iodide Perovskite Phase Stabilization for Photovoltaics

There is an ongoing surge of interest in the use of formamidinium (FA) lead iodide perovskites in photovoltaics due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. However, thermodynamic instability of the desired cubic perovskite (α-FAPbI3) phase at ambient conditions leads to the formation of a yellow non-perovskite (δ-FAPbI3) phase that compromises its utility. A stable α-FAPbI3 perovskite phase is achieved by employing benzylammonium iodide (BzI) and the microscopic structure is elucidated by using solid-state NMR spectroscopy and X-ray scattering measurements. Perovskite solar cells based on the FAPbI3(BzI)0.25 composition achieve power conversion efficiencies exceeding 20%, which is accompanied by enhanced shelf-life and operational stability, maintaining 80% of the performance after one year at ambient conditions.

Goldschmidt's Rules and Strontium Replacement in Lead Halogen Perovskite Solar Cells: Theory and Preliminary Experiments on CH3NH3SrI3

During the past few years, organic lead halogen perovskites have emerged as a class of highly promising solar cell materials, with certified solar cell efficiencies now surpassing 20%. Concerns have, however, been raised about the possible environmental and legalization problems associated with a new solar cell technology based on a water-soluble lead compound. Replacing lead in the perovskite structure: with a less toxic element, without degrading the favorable photo physical properties, would therefore be of interest. In this paper, the possibility of replacing lead with other metal ions is explored by following the replacement rules of Goldschmidt together with additional quantum mechanical considerations. This analysis provides a conceptual toolbox toward replacing lead, as well as additional insights into the photo physics of the metal halogen perovskites. This approach is exemplified by focusing on strontium in particular, which is nontoxic and relatively inexpensive. The ionic radius of Sr2+ and Pb2+ are almost identical, suggesting an exchange could be made without affecting the crystal structure. Couple cluster calculations on the metal ions and their halogen salts give the bonding patterns to be sufficiently similar and density functional theory (DFT) revealed the strontium perovskite, CH3NH3SrI3, to be a stable phase, despite the difference in electronegativity between lead and strontium. This is further supported by the existence of binary PM, and SrI2 compounds and the beneficial formation energy of the strontium perovskite. The electronic properties of both CH3NH3SrI3 and CH3NH3PbI3 were simulated and compared, revealing a higher degree of ionic interaction in the metal halogen bound in the strontium perovskite. This is a consequence of the lower electronegativity of strontium, which, together with the lack of d-orbitals in the Valence of Sr2+, results, in a higher band gap. The band gap for the strontium perovskite was estimated to 3.6 eV, which unfortunately is too high for an efficient photo absorber. Initial investigations on experimental synthesis of the strontium perovskite, using wet chemical methods, revealed it to be harder to produce than the lead perovskite This is explained as a:consequence of different bonding patterns in the metal iodine salts, which obstruct the methylammonium intercalation pathway utilized for forming the perovskite. Vapor phase methods are instead suggested as more promising synthesis routes.

Europium-Doped CsPbI2Br for Stable and Highly Efficient Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells

All-inorganic perovskite films hold promise for improving the stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the 3D alpha phase of narrow-bandgap inorganic perovskites is thermodynamically unstable at room temperature, limiting the development of high-performance inorganic PSCs. Here, we show that europium doping of CsPbI2Br stabilizes the alpha phase of this inorganic perovskite at room temperature. We rationalize it by using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, which show that europium is incorporated into the perovskite lattice. We demonstrate amaximum power-conversion efficiency of 13.71% for an inorganic PSC with the CsPb0.95Eu0.05I2Br perovskite and alpha stable power output of 13.34%. Using electroluminescence we show that incorporation of europium reduces non-radiative recombination, resulting in high open-circuit voltage of 1.27 V. The devices retain 93% of the initial efficiency after 370 hr under 100 mW cm(-2) continuous white light illumination under maximum-power point-tracking measurement.

A review on two-dimensional (2D) and 2D-3D multidimensional perovskite solar cells: Perovskites structures, stability, and photovoltaic performances

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) fabricated with two-dimensional (2D) halide and 2D-3D mixed-halide materials are remarkable for their optoelectronic properties. The 2D perovskite structures are extremely stable but show limited charge transport and large bandgap for solar cell applications. To overcome these challenges, multidi-mensional 2D-3D perovskite materials are used to maintain simultaneously, a long-term stability, and high performance. In this review, we discuss the recent progress and the advantages of 2D and 2D-3D perovskite materials as absorber for solar cell applications. First, we discuss the structure and the unique properties of 2D and multidimensional 2D-3D perovskites materials. Second, the stability of 2D and 2D-3D mixed perovskites and the perspects of PSCs are hashed out.
