Inductive Power Transfer System for Auxiliary Power Supply in Medium Voltage Converters

Inductive power transfer technology is an attractive solution for medium voltage applications by eliminating the need for high voltage cables or wired connections in general. This paper introduces an inductive power transfer system which has multiple independent coil-rectifier outputs, multiple series connected transmitter coils and are supplied from a single transmitter-side converter. Due to the high insulation capability between transmitter and receiver coils, presented system is conceived to be used as auxiliary power supply for power electronics building blocks in medium voltage converters. The coil geometry, compensation network and power electronic converters are designed to achieve high power density and efficiency, despite the large distance between coils that must be overcome. Experimental test setup with five coil pairs is used to demonstrate performances of the system.

High Data Rate RFID Tag/Reader Architecture Using Wireless Voltage Regulation

This paper discusses a novel tag/reader system, based on the passive, far-field RFID principle, with megabits per second read capability at operating ranges of several centimeters. The system operates in the ISM band at 2.45 GHz. A maximum data rate of 4 Mbps was demonstrated, at a tag/reader distance of 5.5 cm. The tag is entirely realized in a standard CMOS process for minimum costs. The described system also uses wireless voltage regulation, an innovative technique that allows to improve the overall efficiency of wireless power transmission and to save power on reader side. According to the measurement results, it is shown that the efficiency was improved by a factor larger than four in the best case. ©2008 IEEE.

A fully integrated Hall sensor microsystem with current-mode output

This paper presents a fully integrated Hall sensor microsystem with a current-mode output. The system operates in open-loop and includes a Hall sensor with internal biasing, a fully differential front-end, a preamplifier chain and a voltage-to-current converter (V-I). The effects of the V-I block on the sensitivity drift of the system are analyzed and a current biasing of the Hall cells is proposed so that the current output feature adds no drift to the microsystem sensitivity. The whole microsystem is integrated in a 0.35μm CMOS technology. It occupies an area of 11.55mm2. The sensitivity drift of the system is characterized, and shows that the V-I does not degrade the overall sensitivity drift of the system.

Human Exposure to Close-Range Resonant Wireless Power Transfer Systems as a Function of Design Parameters

In this study, human exposure to close-range wireless power transfer (WPT) systems operating in the frequency range 0.1-10 MHz with coil diameters up to 150 mm are investigated. Approximation formulae, which include scaling factors derived from numerical simulations that take variations of complex human anatomies into consideration, are proposed to conservatively estimate human exposure with respect to the most authoritative exposure guidelines. The approximation has been verified for two precommercial prototype WPT systems, the first of which, a 5-W system operating at 100 kHz, has been evaluated in this study; the second system been verified was reported in a separate study and operates at 6.78 MHz with a nominal current of 5.4 A rms. Based on the results obtained, the optimal operational frequency range for WPT with respect to compliance with exposure safety guidelines is revealed to be ca. 1-2.5 MHz. In summary, this study provides novel and insightful information for the design of an exposure-compliant close-range magnetic resonant WPT system.
