Matière organiquevignette|Le bois est essentiellement composé de matière organique (lignine et cellulose principalement), très dense en carbone. La matière organique (parfois abrégée MO) est la matière fabriquée par les êtres vivants (végétaux, animaux, champignons et autres décomposeurs dont micro-organismes). La matière organique compose leurs tissus (tige, coquille, muscles, etc). Elle compose la biomasse vivante et morte (nécromasse) au sein d'un cycle décomposition/biosynthèse où une part de cette matière est fossilisée (charbon, pétrole, gaz naturel), minéralisée ou recyclée dans les écosystèmes et agro-écosystèmes.
Predictive modellingPredictive modelling uses statistics to predict outcomes. Most often the event one wants to predict is in the future, but predictive modelling can be applied to any type of unknown event, regardless of when it occurred. For example, predictive models are often used to detect crimes and identify suspects, after the crime has taken place. In many cases, the model is chosen on the basis of detection theory to try to guess the probability of an outcome given a set amount of input data, for example given an email determining how likely that it is spam.
Viking lander biological experimentsIn 1976 two identical Viking program landers each carried four types of biological experiments to the surface of Mars. The first successful Mars landers, Viking 1 and Viking 2, then carried out experiments to look for biosignatures of microbial life on Mars. The landers each used a robotic arm to pick up and place soil samples into sealed test containers on the craft. The two landers carried out the same tests at two places on Mars' surface, Viking 1 near the equator and Viking 2 further north.
