Thermal Ising Transition in the Spin-1/2 J(1)-J(2) Heisenberg Model

Résumé

Using an SU(2) invariant finite-temperature tensor network algorithm, we provide strong numerical evidence in favor of an Ising transition in the collinear phase of the spin-1/2 J(1)-J(2) Heisenberg model on the square lattice. In units of J(2), the critical temperature reaches a maximal value of T-c/J(2 )similar or equal to 0.18 around J(2)/J(1) similar or equal to 1.0. It is strongly suppressed upon approaching the zero-temperature boundary of the collinear phase J(2)/J(1 )similar or equal to 0.6, and it vanishes as 1/log(J(2)/J(1)) in the large J(2)/J(1) limit, as predicted by Chandra et al., [Phys. Rev. Lett. 64, 88 (1990)]. Enforcing the SU(2) symmetry is crucial to avoid the artifact of finite-temperature SU(2) symmetry breaking of U(1) algorithms, opening new perspectives in the investigation of the thermal properties of quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets.

Magnetic phase diagram of the two-dimensional antiferromagnet Ni-5(TeO3)(4)Br-2

Phase diagram of the two-dimensional antiferromagnet Ni-5(TeO3)(4)Br-2 with triangular arrangement of Ni2+ (S=1) magnetic moments within the [Ni5O17Br2] subunits has been investigated by temperature and magnetic field dependent heat-capacity, magnetization, and magnetic-torque measurements down to 1.5 K and up to 23 T. A nonzero magnetic contribution to the heat capacity observed up to 2.3T(N) is consistent with short-range magnetic ordering and the two-dimensional nature of the system. Below the Neel temperature T-N=29 K several antiferromagnetic phases were identified. The zero-field phase is characterized by a planar antiferromagnetic arrangement of the two in-layer neighboring [Ni5O17Br2] magnetic clusters within the magnetic unit cell. When the magnetic field is applied along the a(*) crystal axis, a spin-flop-like transition to a phase with a complex out-of-plane arrangement of Ni2+ (S=1) magnetic moments occurs at similar to 10 T. Using a molecular-field approach we predict that this transition will shift to higher fields with increasing temperature and that a magnetic phase with ferromagnetic ordering of [Ni5O17Br2] magnetic clusters will occur above 24 T. We ascribe the richness of the magnetic phases to strongly exchange-coupled clusters, being the basic building blocks of the investigated layered system.

Lattice symmetries and regular magnetic orders in classical frustrated antiferromagnets

We consider some classical and frustrated lattice spin models with global O(3) spin symmetry. No general analytical method to find a ground state exists when the spin dependence of the Hamiltonian is more than quadratic (i.e., beyond the Heisenberg model) and/or when the lattice has more than one site per unit cell. To deal with these cases, we introduce a family of variational spin configurations, dubbed “regular magnetic orders” (RMO’s), which respect all the lattice symmetries modulo global O(3) spin transformations (rotations and/or spin flips). The construction of these states is made explicit through a group-theoretical approach, and all the RMO’s on the square, triangular, honeycomb, and kagome lattices are listed. Their equal-time structure factors and powder averages are shown for comparison with experiments. Well known Néel states with one, two, or three sublattices on various lattices are RMO’s, but the RMO’s also encompass exotic nonplanar states with cubic, tetrahedral, or cuboctahedral geometry of the T=0 order parameter. Regardless of the details of the Hamiltonian (with the same symmetry group), a large fraction of these RMO’s are energetically stationary with respect to small deviations of the spins. In fact, these RMO’s appear as exact ground states in large domains of parameter space of simple models that we have considered. As examples, we display the variational phase diagrams of the J1-J2-J3 Heisenberg model on all the previous lattices as well as that of the J1-J2-K ring-exchange model on square and triangular lattices.

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on two geometrically related triangles-in-triangles lattices is exactly solved through the generalized star-triangle transformation, which establishes a rigorous mapping correspondence with the effective spin-1/2 Ising model on a triangular lattice. Basic thermodynamic quantities were exactly calculated within this rigorous mapping method along with the ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams. Apart from the classical ferromagnetic phase, both investigated models exhibit several unconventional quantum ordered and disordered ground states. A mutual competition between two ferromagnetic interactions of basically different character generically leads to the emergence of a quantum ferromagnetic phase, in which a symmetric quantum superposition of three up-up-down states of the Heisenberg trimers accompanies a perfect alignment of all Ising spins. In the highly frustrated regime, we have either found the disordered quantum paramagnetic phase with a substantial residual entropy or a similar but spontaneously ordered phase with a nontrivial criticality at finite temperatures. The latter quantum ground state exhibits a striking coexistence of imperfect spontaneous order with partial disorder, which is evidenced by a quantum reduction of the spontaneous magnetization of Heisenberg spins that indirectly causes a small reduction of the spontaneous magnetization of otherwise classical Ising spins.
