In order to numerically solve the interior and the exterior Dirichlet problems for the Laplacian operator, we have presented in a previous paper a method which consists in inverting, on a finite element space, a non-singular integral operator for circular domains. This operator was described as a geometrical perturbation of the Steklov operator, and we have precisely defined the relation between the geometrical perturbation and the dimension of the finite element space, in order to obtain a stable and convergent scheme in which there are non-singular integrals. We have also presented another point of view under which the method can be considered as a special quadrature formula method for the standard piecewise linear Galerkin approximation of the weakly singular single-layer potential. In the present paper, we extend the results given in the previous paper to more general cases for which the Laplace problem is set on any (infinity) domains. In order to numerically solve the interior and the exterior Dirichlet problems for the Laplacian operator, we present here a method which consists in inverting, on a finite element space, a non-singular integral operator. This operator is a geometrical perturbation of the Steklov operator, and we precisely define the relation between the geometrical perturbation and the dimension of the finite element space, in order to obtain a stable and convergent scheme. Furthermore, this numerical scheme does not give rise to any singular integral. The scheme can also be considered as a special quadrature formula method for the standard piecewise linear Galerkin approximation of the weakly singular single layer potential, the special quadrature formula being defined by the introduction of a neighbouring curve. In the present paper, we prove stability and we give error estimates of our numerical scheme when the Laplace problem is set on a disk. A numerical model is presented for the simulation of complex fluid flows with free surfaces. The unknowns are the velocity and pressure fields in the liquid region, together with a function defining the volume fraction of liquid. Although the mathematical formulation of the model is similar to the volume of fluid (VOF) method, the numerical schemes used to solve the problem are different. A splitting method is used for the time discretization. At each time step, two advection problems and a generalized Stokes problem are to be solved. Two different grids are used for the space discretization. The two advection problems are solved on a fixed, structured grid made out of small rectangular cells, using a forward characteristic method. The generalized Stokes problem is solved using a finite element method on a fixed, unstructured mesh. Numerical results are presented for several test cases: the filling of an S-shaped channel, the filling of a disk with core, the broken dam in a confined domain. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

MATHICSE Technical Report : A numerical investigation of multi space reduced basis preconditioners for parametrized elliptic advection-diffusion

We analyze the numerical performance of a preconditioning technique recently proposed in [4] for the ecient solution of parametrized linear systems arising from the finite element (FE) discretization of parameter-dependent elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs). In order to exploit the parametric dependence of the PDE, the proposed preconditioner takes advantage of the reduced basis (RB) method within the preconditioned iterative solver employed to solve the linear system, and combines a RB solver, playing the role of coarse component, with a traditional fine grid (such as Additive Schwarz or block Jacobi) preconditioner. A sequence of RB spaces is required to handle the approximation of the error-residual equation at each step of the iterative method at hand, whence the name of Multi Space Reduced Basis (MSRB) method. In this paper, a numerical investigation of the proposed technique is carried on in the case of a Richardson iterative method, and then extended to the flexible GMRES method, in order to solve parameterized advection-diffusion problems. Particular attention is payed to the impact of anisotropic diffusion coeffcients and (possibly dominant) transport terms on the proposed preconditioner, by carrying out detailed comparisons with the current state of the art algebraic multigrid preconditioners.
