Résumé

The exchange of moisture and heat between the land and the atmosphere is an area of major uncertainty in different fields of environmental research including global problems such as climate change and more local and regional studies such as the influence of changes of the landscape on the microclimate. With the goal of developing an improved representation of land-atmosphere exchange, a numerical soil moisture and heat (NSSMH) transfer model was developed that uses atmospheric conditions as the primary forcing to calculate heat fluxes between the soil and the overlying air. The model calculates vapor and liquid moisture transport as well as sensible heat transfer. In several tests the code was shown to be a useful tool for understanding the nature of the surface exchange phenomena. Among these, it was shown that during the afternoon when the soil surface is being heated by the sun, water vapor inside the soil column is flowing both downwards and upwards.

Moisture and energy dynamics in fields soils

Soil moisture is crucial to water-cycle as it affects infiltration, runoff and land-atmosphere interactions. In dry soils the role of water vapor fluxes becomes essential and causes a tight coupling between soil moisture dynamics and heat transfer, which makes measurements and modeling extremely difficult. Since advances in both theory and experimental techniques are required, we have focused on both aspects: we have performed theoretical-numerical investigations of soil moisture and energy dynamics at the land surface; tested novel measurements techniques, in laboratory and at field scale, to provide new insights into soil moisture dynamics and contribute to a comprehensive theory of coupled energy and moisture transport. As the dynamics of physical systems are dictated by conservation equations, it is common practice to estimate quantities that cannot be directly measured (e.g. vapor fluxes) from the residuals of balance equations. In laboratory as well as in field experiments, residuals are calculated from measurements that are sparse in space and discrete in time. We have theoretically and numerically shown how the use of discrete data may lead to large residuals even without measurements or model errors. We have demonstrated that residuals are very sensitive to the distance between the measurements and that they increase in presence of nonlinear processes, such as moisture transport. A careful error analysis is required to assess the reliability of residuals computed from discrete data and avoid misinterpretations of the underlying physical processes. Another crucial element dictating soil moisture dynamics and evaporation into the atmosphere is soil water-retention. Popular parametric models of the retention curve present a matric potential that becomes infinite at residual saturation, which is the water content below which liquid flow stops. Few extensions of the water-retention curves have been proposed, which remain rarely used in practice. We have studied the effects of different models on liquid and vapor transport. We have shown that parameterizations that allow vapor flux below residual saturation yield larger vapor fluxes that result in a drier soil surface, whereas deep soil remains relatively wet. When diurnal forcing is considered, potential evaporation is reduced in the energy-limited regime and enhanced in the moisture-limited regime. We have established that in this case extended water-retention models predict larger heat fluxes that might critically impact models at whole scales (possibly including global circulation models). Discrimination between different theoretical descriptions and parametric models requires experiments that monitor moisture and energy dynamics. This demands the use of accurate sensors and measurement techniques that are able to simultaneously monitor several quantities (e.g. soil moisture, temperature, soil thermal properties, solute concentration in soil water). As in general different probes are used, problems arise due to different footprints and sampled soil volumes. Multi functional heat pulse probes (MFHPPs) have been conceived to overcome these issues by allowing simultaneous measurements of all required variables. We have assessed MFHPPs ability to measure ground heat flux, which has to be accurately known to avoid significant imbalances in the surface energy budget. We have employed an experimental setup able to generate a non-uniform heat-flux field and we have demonstrated that MFHPPs can reliably capture the magnitudes and directions of the fluxes. This allows more complete information on ground heat flux than that obtained by the classic probes (e.g. ground heat flux plates). To monitor soil state in large-scale field applications we have investigated the possibility to infer distributed thermal conductivity and soil moisture profiles with an optical fiber. Information is obtained by monitoring soil response to an active heat pulse generated from the metal shield armoring the optic cable, and analyzing the temperature differences of the cooling phase, monitored each meter by a distributed temperature sensing system (DTS). We have shown that soil moisture measurements inferred from soil thermal response (recorded by the DTS) are in good agreement with independent measurements in wet and intermediately wet soils; however in dry soils moisture content is underestimated and further investigations are required to improve this technique for dry conditions. In this study we have significantly improved the knowledge of coupled energy and moisture transport on both theoretical-numerical and experimental sides. We have proven that reliable measurements can be obtained at different spatiotemporal scales, and provided both prognostic and diagnostic methods to optimize their use. Finally, we have suggested crucial improvements to numerical models which might have implications beyond field-soils dynamics.

Water Vapor and Heat Exchanges over Lakes

Quantifying the interaction of the atmosphere and water surfaces is of great importance for water resources management, climate studies of ocean-atmosphere exchange and regional climate in coastal areas. Atmospheric dynamics over water surfaces have generally received less attention than land-atmosphere interactions due to difficulties in operating field studies. In this research we are trying to improve the physical parameterizations of lake-atmosphere processes by integrating measurements and modeling studies. The Lake-Atmosphere Turbulent EXchanges (LATEX) field measurement campaign is analyzed to understand air-water interactions over Lac Léman (Geneva). Large eddy simulations are used to study sensible and latent heat fluxes over heterogeneous wet surfaces. We present parameters of interest for land-surface modeling, i.e. the surface energy budget and the roughness lengths for momentum, heat and water vapor that are embedded in the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory used in atmospheric models. The storage of energy in the lake is a very important term, yet methods used to quantify it, relying on temperature profile measurements from a fiber optic and the theory of conduction of heat, are not successful. We revisit classical wet surface evaporation estimation methods that include this challenging term and derive an evaporation formulation based on sensible heat flux measurements. We then focus on numerical (large eddy) simulations of the flow above a water surface. Small-scale turbulence (the so-called subgrid scales, SGS) over the lake that cannot be captured in large eddy simulations is investigated. The measurements of LATEX allowed, for the first time, the study of subgrid-scale turbulent transport of water vapor over a lake, which reveals itself well correlated with the transport of heat. Results from an a priori analysis of subgrid-scale fluxes and dissipations indicate that the observed subgrid-scale statistics are very similar to those observed over land surfaces. We use the EPFL-LES code, with its scale-dependent Lagrangian dynamic SGS model, to simulate flows over transition from dry land to wet surfaces. We observe the fetch requirement for evaporation formulations and compare to results from simplified Lagrangian footprint models. We explore the limits of applicability of Monin-Obukhov similarity theory that are due to the finite fetch.

Energy storage is a central issue in the green economy with half the global end energy usage being heat. Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) provides an energy dense heat storage solution with a well-defined discharge temperature. Utilizing low-cost, high-temperature, high-conducting metal alloys as phase change materials (PCMs) enables high energy and power density LHTES systems. Detailed characterization, reliable design tools and guidelines for modelling and building such systems are missing. This thesis presents design-related and operation-oriented innovations for such systems at different scales: (a) application-scale experimental-numerical demonstration of a LHTES test-bed, (b) non-dimensional numerical study of low and high-conducting PCMs at storage-unit scale, (c) novel power dense macro-porous PCM structures at encapsulation scale, and (d) interface scale experimental melt interface tracking by advanced tomography techniques for high-temperature PCMs.A megajoule scale high-temperature LHTES modular LHTES test-bed was built and tested, for charging-discharging at temperatures up to 950 K with aluminium alloy PCM encapsulated in stainless steel and air as the heat transfer fluid (HTF). Engineered open-cell cellular ceramic lattice were used as porous fins for enhancing the HTF-PCM heat transfer. Successful first operation was demonstrated with near-isothermal discharge for 2.7 hours in a 1.31 MJ storage. A quasi-1D lumped parameter model was developed and validated to quantify its thermal stratification, heat losses, and phase change characteristics. Heat storage characteristics of scaled configurations of the test-bed were predicted using the model.A 2D transient phase change model was used to compare a high-conducting, high melting point aluminium alloy PCM with a commercially available low-conducting, low melting point paraffin wax to quantify the effect of PCM properties, encapsulation shape, load conditions, and buoyancy driven internal convection on the power density. Parametric study and non-dimensional analysis quantified the influence of thermal and geometrical parameters on phase change and contribution of natural convection inside the encapsulations linking the melt fraction and heat transfer rates to combination of Fourier, Stefan, Rayleigh and Nusselt numbers.With high-conducting PCMs, the LHTES power density is limited by HTF-PCM convective heat transfer which can be enhanced by using novel macro-porous encapsulation designs. A comparison of several random and ordered macro-porous cells was performed with a 3D coupled CFD-phase change model. A mesh-based convolutional neural network was trained to emulate the 3D model and predict phase change time and pressure drop characteristics. Finally, a synchrotron source X-ray tomography experimental campaign to create a validation case for phase change models of high-temperature PCMs is detailed. Transient 3D melt interface tracking was conducted for aluminium alloy in cylindrical encapsulations heated using lasers. As the beamline was limited to small samples, a furnace heating setup was also built for radiography experiments of larger cubic samples at a tabletop CT facility.This thesis presents a combination of modelling frameworks and experimental setups to provide general understanding of transient heat transfer in PCMs at different scales, provide novel approaches for heat transfer enhancement, and tools for designing high-temperature LHTES systems.
