Chiralité (chimie)

Le concept de la chiralité existe également dans d'autres domaines. En chimie, un composé est dit chiral (du grec χείρ : la main) s'il n'est pas superposable à son image dans un miroir plan. Il existe un certain nombre de raisons pour lesquelles une molécule peut être chirale : la présence d'un ou plusieurs centres asymétriques (sauf certaines conditions particulières de symétrie) ; une forme en hélice ; un plan de chiralité. Énantiomérie Si une molécule est chirale, elle possède au moins deux formes dites énantiomères qui se différencient par une configuration absolue opposée.

En chimie, un racémique ou racémate est un mélange en proportions égales des énantiomères lévogyre et dextrogyre d'un composé chiral. Autrement dit, pour le cas des molécules contenant un seul carbone asymétrique, fréquentes en chimie organique, un racémique contient à proportions égales les deux formes (R,S) selon la nomenclature des configurations absolues (règles de Cahn, Ingold et Prelog). Le premier racémique identifié comme tel fut l'acide racémique que Louis Pasteur analysa comme étant un mélange de deux stéréoisomères d'un dérivé de l'acide tartrique, le tartrate d'ammonium et de sodium.

In chemistry, racemization is a conversion, by heat or by chemical reaction, of an optically active compound into a racemic (optically inactive) form. This creates a 1:1 molar ratio of enantiomers and is referred to as a racemic mixture (i.e. contain equal amount of (+) and (−) forms). Plus and minus forms are called Dextrorotation and levorotation. The D and L enantiomers are present in equal quantities, the resulting sample is described as a racemic mixture or a racemate.
