Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE, colloquially BLE, formerly marketed as Bluetooth Smart) is a wireless personal area network technology designed and marketed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (Bluetooth SIG) aimed at novel applications in the healthcare, fitness, beacons, security, and home entertainment industries. It is independent of classic Bluetooth and has no compatibility, but Bluetooth Basic Rate/Enhanced Data Rate (BR/EDR) and LE can coexist. The original specification was developed by Nokia in 2006 under the name Wibree, which was integrated into Bluetooth 4.0 in December 2009 as Bluetooth Low Energy. Merging Inhomogeneous Proximity Sensor Systems for Social Network Analysis

Proximity information is a valuable source for social network analysis. Smartphone based sensors, like GPS, Bluetooth and ANT+, can be used to obtain proximity information between individuals within a group. However, in real-life scenarios, different people use different devices, featuring different sensor modalities. To draw the most complete picture of the spatial proximities between individuals, it is advantageous to merge data from an inhomogeneous system into one common representation. In this work we describe strategies how to merge data from Bluetooth sensors with data from ANT+ sensors. Interconnection between both systems is achieved using pre-knowledge about social rules and additional infrastructure. Proposed methods are applied to a data collection from 41 participants during an 8 day pilgrimage. Data from peer-to-peer sensors as well as GPS sensors is collected. The merging steps are evaluated by calculating state-of-the art features from social network analysis. Results indicate that the merging steps improve the completeness of the obtained network information while not altering the morphology of the network.

Key Negotiation Downgrade Attacks on Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy

Bluetooth (BR/EDR) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) are pervasive wireless technologies specified in the Bluetooth standard. The standard includes key negotiation protocols used to generate long-term keys (during pairing) and session keys (during secure connection establishment). In this work, we demonstrate that the key negotiation protocols of Bluetooth and BLE are vulnerable to standard-compliant entropy downgrade attacks. In particular, we show how an attacker can downgrade the entropy of any Bluetooth session key to 1 byte, and of any BLE long-term key and session key to 7 bytes. Such low entropy values enable the attacker to brute-force Bluetooth long-term keys and BLE long-term and session keys, and to break all the security guarantees promised by Bluetooth and BLE. As a result of our attacks, an attacker can decrypt all the ciphertext and inject valid ciphertext in any Bluetooth and BLE network. Our key negotiation downgrade attacks are conducted remotely, do not require access to the victims' devices, and are stealthy to the victims. As the attacks are standard-compliant, they are effective regardless of the usage of the strongest Bluetooth and BLE security modes (including Secure Connections), the Bluetooth version, and the implementation details of the devices used by the victims. We successfully attack 38 Bluetooth devices (32 unique Bluetooth chips) and 19 BLE devices from different vendors, using all the major versions of the Bluetooth standard. Finally, we present effective legacy compliant and non-legacy compliant countermeasures to mitigate our key negotiation downgrade attacks.

A Self-powered Ambient Light Power Measurement Platform with Time-domain Readout

Internet of Things (IoT) provides more and more adequate infrastructures for many applications and advanced services. This scenario promotes the ability to satisfy the growing demand for innovative measuring systems, increasingly popular consisting of intelligent nodes, totally wireless, easy to install, and that requires the least possible maintenance. In this context, this paper aims to contribute to state of the art with an energy-autonomous and battery-free measurement platform designed to measure the ambient light power when its level exceeds the sensitivity threshold. The measurement platform utilizes a single transducer to scavenge energy and concurrently measure the ambient light intensity. The result is a wireless measurement platform, which requires neither a battery nor a specific ambient light sensor, with the immediate advantage of achieving greater energy efficiency and using fewer components. The device implements off-the-shelf components on a printed circuit board (PCB) with a tag size of 2 x 2 cm(2). Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) implements radio implements device connectivity. Experimental data show that the device can acquire energy and detect ambient light with a limit of detection (LoD) of 250 lux and accuracy below 12%.
