A Capacitively-Coupled Chopper Instrumentation Amplifier for Implantable Bridge Sensor Systems

This paper presents an energy and area efficient capacitively-coupled chopper instrumentation amplifier (CCIA) dedicated to implantable bridge sensor systems. Chopper stabilization is employed to decrease its offset and 1/f noise and the resulting ripple due to the up-modulated offset and 1/f noise is suppressed by a switched-capacitor ripple reduction loop. The gain of the instrumentation amplifier is defined by a programmable capacitive feedback network with a gain range from 40 V/V to 116 V/V, which is suitable for use with bridge sensors having different output voltages. The proposed CCIA has been fabricated in a standard 0.18 mu m CMOS process. It achieves an input noise of 88.2 nV/root Hz, a worst-case input offset of 5 mu V, and an output ripple of less than 185 mu V. The CCIA occupies only 0.17 mm(2) chip area and draws 3.3 mu A current from a 1.2 V supply.

Portable Multi-Frequency Impedance-Sensing Device for Bacteria Classification in a Flowing Liquid

This paper presents a novel impedance-sensing device and its related microfluidics system developed to characterize the macroscopical properties of bacteria and microparticles. The system is based on a phase-sensitive detector with square-waves excitation voltage ranging from 20 kHz to 40 MHz as inputs to characterize microparticles in situ using impedance spectroscopy and impedance flow cytometry. The particles pass through a 100 mu m by 120 mu m polydimethylsiloxane microchannel bonded on a printed circuit board etched with 200 mu m wide electrodes. The measured data show an error of less than 7% for the impedance magnitude and of less than 3 degrees for the phase, over the whole frequency range. It adequately measures the three zones of the impedance of saline water usually associated to the electrical double-layer, liquid bulk-resistance, and electrode shape.

This paper presents the open-source Python-based parameter extractor (SEKV-E) for the simplified EKV (sEKV) model, which enables the modern low-power circuit designs with the inversion coefficient design methodology. The tool extracts the essential sEKV parameters automatically from the given I-V curves using the direct extraction and the multi-stage optimization process. It also handles the overfitting issue because of non-linear least squares. Moreover, this work demonstrates the SEKV-E as a universal tool by widely applying it to different silicon technologies, temperatures, dimensions, and back-gate voltages.
