A Grammar of Muqarnas: Drawings of the Alhambra by Jones and Goury (1834-1845)

The muqarnas of the Nasrid Alhambra stand out as one of the most singular architectural episodes o f Medieval Islamic art due to their sophisticated three-dimensional construction, whose layout remains little known. In 1834 and 1837, the architects Owen Jones and Jules Gouty visited the monument in Granada and accomplished surprising drawings thereof later published towards 1842-1845 as chromolithograph prints, which represented its architecture, ornaments, and muqarnas in a systematic way for the first time. In order to value their pioneering drawings, the historical data is briefly reviewed and several previous drawings of the Alhambra are cited. After consideration of a few questions regarding the process of data collection in Granada, a comparative analysis is presented of a cornice, a capital, an arch and a pendentive, with photos and computer-aided drawings. Thus, the principles or elementary grammar of muqarnas groupings described by these architects are highlighted, as well as the precision of their images, which resulted crucial to integrate and disseminate the architectural legacy of the Alhambra in the contemporary Western culture.

Building Cultures Valparaiso: pedagogy practice and poetry at the Valparaiso School of Architecture and Design

"'Building Cultures Valparaiso" investigates the radical approach to teaching and making at the School of Architecture and Design in Valparaiso, Chile. With newly commissioned essays from, among other, Beatriz Colomina, Ignacio Gonzalez Galán and Gerald Wildgruber and a collection of meticulously reproduced drawings from the school's archives, 'Building Cultures Valparaiso' is a resource for scholars and practicioners interested in alternative visions of architecture." "In August of 2014, students from three Swiss schools of architecture traveled to Chile where they joined colleagues from the Valparaiso School to initiate the construction of the 'Pórtico de los Huéspedes' in the Open City. The 'Pórtico de los Huéspedes' will house a research center and administrative offices as well as an assembly space for the collected students and faculty of the Valparaiso School. Over a three week period, students surveyed an area designated for the project and determined a site, tested and elaborated details through drawing, models, and 1:1 fabrication, and began the construction of the wooden frame of the project. The resulting structure - whose volume is based on Erik Gunnar Asplund's Woodland Chapel project form 1918-1929 - wil be continued, revised and amended over the course of the next four years."

Hanani-Tutte and Monotone Drawings

A drawing of a graph is x-monotone if every edge intersects every vertical line at most once and every vertical line contains at most one vertex. Pach and Toth showed that if a graph has an x-monotone drawing in which every pair of edges crosses an even number of times, then the graph has an x-monotone embedding in which the x-coordinates of all vertices are unchanged. We give a new proof of this result and strengthen it by showing that the conclusion remains true even if adjacent edges are allowed to cross oddly. This answers a question posed by Pach and Toth. Moreover, we show that an extension of this result for graphs with non-adjacent pairs of edges crossing oddly fails even if there exists only one such pair in a graph.
