Derrière le miroirDerrière le Miroir is a French art magazine created in 1946 and published until 1982. Art galleries, auction houses and booksellers often refer to this art magazine simply as D.L.M. or DLM. Aimé Maeght is the founder, editor and publisher. In October 1945, the French art dealer Aimé Maeght opened his art gallery at 13 Rue de Téhéran in Paris. The opening of the gallery coincides with the end of World War II and the return of a number of exiled artists back to France.
Max RingelmannMaximilien Ringelmann (10 December 1861, Paris – 2 May 1931, Paris) was a French professor of agricultural engineering and agronomic engineer who was involved in the scientific testing and development of agricultural machinery. Ringelmann's interests were wide-ranging: he developed the Ringelmann scale which is still used to measure smoke. He also discovered the Ringelmann effect in social psychology, viz, that when working in groups, individuals slacken.
Hirak (Algeria)The 2019–2021 Algerian protests, also called Revolution of Smiles or Hirak Movement (الحِرَاك), began on 16 February 2019, six days after Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced his candidacy for a fifth presidential term in a signed statement. These protests, without precedent since the Algerian Civil War, were peaceful and led the military to insist on Bouteflika's immediate resignation, which took place on 2 April 2019. By early May, a significant number of power-brokers close to the deposed administration, including the former president's younger brother Saïd, had been arrested.
Yvette AmiceYvette Amice (June 4, 1936 – July 4, 1993) was a French mathematician whose research concerned number theory and p-adic analysis. She was president of the Société mathématique de France. Amice studied mathematics at the École normale supérieure de jeunes filles in Sèvres, beginnining in 1956 and earning her agrégation in 1959. She became an assistant at the Faculté des sciences de Paris until 1964, when she completed a state doctorate under the supervision of Charles Pisot. Her dissertation was Interpolation p-adique [p-adic interpolation].
Arthur Bernard (author)Jean-Pierre Arthur Bernard (11 June 1940 – 26 October 2022) was a French author, historian, and essayist. Bernard was born in Valence at the start of World War II to a middle-class family. He studied at the Grenoble Institute of Political Studies (IEP Grenoble) and the Sciences Po before continuing with literature at Paris-Sorbonne University. From 1968 to 2008, Bernard taught history of political ideas at IEP Grenoble. In 1995, he was a visiting professor in the French and Italian departments at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Kilien StengelKilien Stengel (born 1972 in Nevers) is a French gastronomic author, restaurateur, and cookbook writer. He has worked at Gidleigh Park, Nikko Hotels, Georges V Hotel in Paris, and in a number of Relais & Châteaux restaurants (including Marc Meneau and Jacques Lameloise). He was a teacher of gastronomy at the Paris Academy and of Orléans-Tours. Stengel works at the European Institute for the History and Culture of Food at François Rabelais University. He is captain of a culinary book fair, and directed a collection book edited by L'harmattan.
Anne AugerAnne Auger is a French numerical analyst and computer scientist interested in benchmarks and performance analysis of black-box methods for numerical optimization. She is a director of research for the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (Inria), and the leader of RandOpt, the Randomized Optimization team at the Inria Saclay research center. Auger earned an agrégation in mathematics in 2000 at Paris-Sud University and a diploma in numerical analysis at Pierre and Marie Curie University in 2001.
Gaël OctaviaGaël Octavia (29 December 1977 in Fort-de-France (Martinique), is a French writer and playwright. She is also a film director and painter. Gaël Octavia grew up on a council estate in Schœlcher, where she was greatly influenced by her parents. Her mother would tell the story of Octavia's grandmother, who fell in love with a married man. When he died, she was left alone to raise her children, destitute and excluded. This family story captivated Gaël Octavia, who retold it in Ma Parole.
