Measurement of CP Violation in the Phase Space of B-+/- -> K-+/-pi(+)pi(-) and B-+/- -> (KK+K-)-K-+/- Decays

The charmless decays B-+/- -> K-+/-pi(+)pi(-) and B-+/- -> (KK+K-)-K-+/- are reconstructed using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1), collected by LHCb in 2011. The inclusive charge asymmetries of these modes are measured as A(CP)(B-+/- -> (KK+K-)-K-+/-) =0.032 +/- 0.008(stat)+/- 0.004(syst)+/- 0.007(J/psi K-+/-), and A(CP)(B-+/- -> (KK+K-)-K-+/-) = -0.043 +/- 0.009(stat)+/- 0.003 (syst) = 0.007(J/psi K-+/-), where the third uncertainty is due to the CP asymmetry of the B-+/- -> J/psi K-+/- reference mode. The significance of A(CP)(B-+/- -> (KK+K-)-K-+/-) exceeds three standard deviations and is the first evidence of an inclusive CP asymmetry in charmless three- body B decays. In addition to the inclusive CP asymmetries, larger asymmetries are observed in localized regions of phase space.

The inclusive charge asymmetries of these modes are measured to be A(CP)(B-+/- -> K+K-pi(+/-)) = -0.141 +/- 0.040(stat) +/- 0.018(syst) +/- 0.007(J/psi K-+/-) and A(CP)(B +/- -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(+/-)) = 0.117 +/- 0.021 (stat) +/- 0.009 (syst) +/- 0.007(J/psi K-+/-), where the third uncertainty is due to the CP asymmetry of the B-+/- -> J/psi K-+/- reference mode. In addition to the inclusive CP asymmetries, larger asymmetries are observed in localized regions of phase space.

A search for time-integrated CP violation in the Cabibbo-suppressed decay D-0 -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(+)pi(-) is performed using an unbinned, model-independent technique known as the energy test. This is the first application of the energy test in four-body decays. The search is performed for P-even CP asymmetries and, for the first time, is extended to probe the P-odd case. Using proton proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of root s = 7 TeV and 8 TeV, the world's best sensitivity to CP violation in this decay is obtained. The data are found to be consistent with the hypothesis of CP symmetry with a p-value of (4.6 +/- 0.5)% in the P-even case, and marginally consistent with a p-value of (0.6 +/- 0.2)% in the P-odd case, corresponding to a significance for CP non -conservation of 2.7 standard deviations. A search for charge-parity (CP) violation in D-0 -> K-K+ and D-0 -> pi(-)pi(+) decays is reported, using pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.9 fb(-1) collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the LHCb detector. The flavor of the charm meson is inferred from the charge of the pion in D* (2010)(+) -> D-0 pi(+) decays or from the charge of the muon in (B) over bar -> D-0 mu(-)(nu) over bar X-mu decays. The difference between the CP asymmetries in D-0 -> K-K+ and D-0 -> pi(-)pi(+) decays is measured to be Delta A(CP) = [-18.2 +/- 3.2(stat) +/- 0.9(syst)] x 10(-4) for pi-tagged and Delta A(CP) = [-9 +/- 8(stat) +/- 5(syst)] x 10(-4) for mu-tagged D-0 mesons. Combining these with previous LHCb results leads to Delta A(CP) = (-15.4 +/- 2.9) x 10(-4), where the uncertainty includes both statistical and systematic contributions. The measured value differs from zero by more than 5 standard deviations. This is the first observation of CP violation in the decay of charm hadrons.
