Bio-inspired balance controller for a humanoid robot

Humanoid robots are gaining much interest nowadays. This is partly motivated by the ability of such robots to replace humans in dangerous environments being specifically designed for humans, such as man-made or natural disaster scenarios. However, existing robots are far from reaching human skills regarding the robustness to external perturbations required for such tasks, although torque-controlled and even bio-inspired robots hold new promises for research. A humanoid robot robustly interacting with its environment should be capable of handling highly uncertain ground structures, collisions, and other external perturbations. In this paper, a 3D bio-inspired balance controller is developed using a virtual lower limbs musculoskeletal model. An inverse muscular model that transforms the desired torque patterns into muscular stimulations closes the gap between traditional and bio-inspired controllers. The main contribution consists in developing a neural controller that computes the muscular stimulations driving this musculoskeletal model. This neural controller exploits the inverse model output to progressively learn the appropriate muscular stimulations for rejecting disturbances, without relying on the inverse model anymore. Two concurrent approaches are implemented to perform this autonomous learning: a cerebellar model and a support vector regression algorithm. The developed methods are tested in the Robotran simulation environment with COMAN, a compliant child-sized humanoid robot. Results illustrate that - at the end of the learning phase - the robot manages to reject perturbations by performing a full-body compensation requiring neither to solve an inverse dynamic model nor to get force measurement. Muscular stimulations are directly generated based on the previously learned perturbations.

Active origami platforms for human-robot interactions

Robots are employed to assist humans in lengthy, challenging, and repetitive tasks. However, the fields of rehabilitation, haptics, and assistive robotics have shown a significant need to support and interact with people in their everyday life. To facilitate these further needs, robots must overcome constraints in compactness, degrees of freedom (DoF), and mechanical performance. However, developing a robot with these characteristics is challenging for conventional mechanics. First, creating a meso-scale device requires the assembly of small components, which is laborious and increases manufacturing cost, time, and complexity. In addition, devices with several DoF and functionalities also require more parts to create numerous links and joints, actuators, and thus space, affecting the compactness of systems. Finally, aiming for mechanical performance in terms of force, speed, and motion range requires transmissions or bulky actuators, which also influence the size of the system. This thesis attempts to overcome the limitations of conventional mechanics by using origami robots, an alternative design approach for creating meso-scale structures with numerous folding joints. It consists in stacking layers of functional material to achieve low-profile and scalable structures that fold into 3D. Using this method, we developed three hybrid robots combining the decades of experience of conventional mechanics with the advantages of origami robotics. First, to enhance the performances of robots at the meso-scale, the creation of compact low-profile compliant transmissions benefiting from origami's minimal assembly of functional layers was explored. The transmissions obtained can reproduce conventional kinematics or generate unconventional motions using materials properties. Second, the development of multi-DoF compact robots was studied using the aforementioned low-profile compliant transmissions to create a multi-functional structure. The resulting robot is a fingertip haptic device called Haptigami that can render vibrotactile and three-DoF force feedback without compromising bulkiness. Then, this study aimed at creating a meso-scale, multi-DoF, and mechanically efficient robot. We combined the previous device contributions and developed Flexure Variable Stiffness Actuators (F-VSA), a novel compliant actuator that uses the origami flexure hinges' inherent stiffness to avoid hindering mechanical simplicity. Finally, we developed a software architecture that enables high-level control of the human-robot hardware and is compatible with multiple simulation engines. We used this architecture to control our robots and provide feedback to the user, based on interactions in a virtual environment. These novel robots rely on non-conventional structures, actuators, and kinematics that require exploring and testing suitable control strategies. Hence, kinematic and stiffness models were developed and used to tune the position, force, and stiffness of the end-effector. Several characterization platforms and experimental protocols suitable for testing our unique robotic systems were also developed to assess their precision and efficiency. Consequently, the results of this study pave the way for the development of robots that adapt to multiple environments, interactions, and application scenarios, compatible with the human bandwidth without hindering the user's motion and comfort in everyday life.

Calibration of high-precision flexure parallel robots

Over the last decades, calibration techniques have been widely used in robotics since they represent a cost-effective solution for improving the accuracy of robots and machine-tools. They only involve software modification without the necessity of revising the robot design or tightening the manufacturing tolerances. The goal of this thesis is to propose a procedure that guides the engineer through the calibration of a given multi-DOF flexure parallel robot within sub-µm accuracy. Two robots having 3 and 6 degrees of freedom have been considered as a case-study throughout the work. As in any calibration procedure, the work has been conducted on three different fronts: measurement, data processing and validation. The originality of this thesis in respect to published material lies in these three points. Measurements were carried out in a chamber inside which the measuring environment was protected against mechanical and thermal perturbations. In particular, the temperature variations experienced by the different parts of the measuring loop during a typical measurement session were stabilized within less than ± 0.1 °C. Proposed procedures allow the collection of reliable sets of data on the two robots. Delicate aspects of practical implementation are discussed. In particular, the problem of collecting a complete set of 6D data within accuracies in the nanometre range, for which there is still a lack of standard equipment, is solved using a procedure comprising several steps and making use of existing instrumentation. Suggestions for future investigations are given, regarding either long-term research problems or short-term industrial implementation issues. Data processing was performed using two different techniques in order to reach absolute accuracies after calibration better than ± 100 nm for translations and ± 3 arcsec for rotations (± 0.3 arcsec inside a more restricted range of ± 0.11°). The first method is called the "model-based approach" and requires the use of a known analytical relationship between the motor and operational coordinates of the robot. This relationship involves a certain number of parameters that can be related to the geometry of the robot (physical models) or simply mathematical coefficients of an approximating mathematical function (behavioural models). In the case of high-precision multi-DOF flexure parallel robots, we show that polynomial-based behavioural models are preferable to physical models in terms of accuracy for data processing tasks. In the second method, called the "model-free approach", the user does not need to model explicitly the main error sources (or their effect) affecting the robot accuracy. A model-free approach has been implemented using Artificial Neural Networks. We show that, using a heuristic search based on a decision-tree, the architecture of a network with satisfactory prediction capability can be found systematically. In particular, this algorithm can find a network able to predict the direct correspondence between the motor and operational coordinates (within the desired accuracy) without the help of the Inverse Geometric Model of the robot, i.e. even if the nominal geometry of the robot being calibrated remains unknown. This result contradicts conclusions reported by previous researchers. It is claimed that any robot (not necessarily a high-precision flexure parallel mechanism) can be calibrated by means of a "neural approach" in which the architecture of an appropriate network is determined with the help of our algorithm. Two examples (other than the robots measured in this thesis) are given to illustrate this universality. In the last part of this work, we provide a feasibility study on the use of indentation, a technique traditionally used for material testing, as a validation procedure to assess the accuracy of the calibrated degrees of freedom. The industrial interest of this technique lies in the fact that the robot is asked to execute similar motions to those involved in a real micro-machining operation.

Imitation Learning of Motion Coordination in Robots

The ease with which humans coordinate all their limbs is fascinating. Such a simplicity is the result of a complex process of motor coordination, i.e. the ability to resolve the biomechanical redundancy in an efficient and repeatable manner. Coordination enables a wide variety of everyday human activities from filling in a glass with water to pair figure skating. Therefore, it is highly desirable to endow robots with similar skills. Despite the apparent diversity of coordinated motions, all of them share a crucial similarity: these motions are dictated by underlying constraints. The constraints shape the formation of the coordination patterns between the different degrees of freedom. Coordination constraints may take a spatio-temporal form; for instance, during bimanual object reaching or while catching a ball on the fly. They also may relate to the dynamics of the task; for instance, when one applies a specific force profile to carry a load. In this thesis, we develop a framework for teaching coordination skills to robots. Coordination may take different forms, here, we focus on teaching a robot intra-limb and bimanual coordination, as well as coordination with a human during physical collaborative tasks. We use tools from well-established domains of Bayesian semiparametric learning (Gaussian Mixture Models and Regression, Hidden Markov Models), nonlinear dynamics, and adaptive control. We take a biologically inspired approach to robot control. Specifically, we adopt an imitation learning perspective to skill transfer, that offers a seamless and intuitive way of capturing the constraints contained in natural human movements. As the robot is taught from motion data provided by a human teacher, we exploit evidence from human motor control of the temporal evolution of human motions that may be described by dynamical systems. Throughout this thesis, we demonstrate that the dynamical system view on movement formation facilitates coordination control in robots. We explain how our framework for teaching coordination to a robot is built up, starting from intra-limb coordination and control, moving to bimanual coordination, and finally to physical interaction with a human. The dissertation opens with the discussion of learning discrete task-level coordination patterns, such as spatio-temporal constraints emerging between the two arms in bimanual manipulation tasks. The encoding of bimanual constraints occurs at the task level and proceeds through a discretization of the task as sequences of bimanual constraints. Once the constraints are learned, the robot utilizes them to couple the two dynamical systems that generate kinematic trajectories for the hands. Explicit coupling of the dynamical systems ensures accurate reproduction of the learned constraints, and proves to be crucial for successful accomplishment of the task. In the second part of this thesis, we consider learning one-arm control policies. We present an approach to extracting non-linear autonomous dynamical systems from kinematic data of arbitrary point-to-point motions. The proposed method aims to tackle the fundamental questions of learning robot coordination: (i) how to infer a motion representation that captures a multivariate coordination pattern between degrees of freedom and that generalizes this pattern to unseen contexts; (ii) whether the policy learned directly from demonstrations can provide robustness against spatial and temporal perturbations. Finally, we demonstrate that the developed dynamical system approach to coordination may go beyond kinematic motion learning. We consider physical interactions between a robot and a human in situations where they jointly perform manipulation tasks; in particular, the problem of collaborative carrying and positioning of a load. We extend the approach proposed in the second part of this thesis to incorporate haptic information into the learning process. As a result, the robot adapts its kinematic motion plan according to human intentions expressed through the haptic signals. Even after the robot has learned the task model, the human still remains a complex contact environment. To ensure robustness of the robot behavior in the face of the variability inherent to human movements, we wrap the learned task model in an adaptive impedance controller with automatic gain tuning. The techniques, developed in this thesis, have been applied to enable learning of unimanual and bimanual manipulation tasks on the robotics platforms HOAP-3, KATANA, and i-Cub, as well as to endow a pair of simulated robots with the ability to perform a manipulation task in the physical collaboration.
