Hilbert spaces arise naturally and frequently in mathematics and physics, typically as function spaces. Formally, a Hilbert space is a vector space equipped with an inner product that induces a distance function for which the space is a complete metric space.
Diagonal matrixIn linear algebra, a diagonal matrix is a matrix in which the entries outside the main diagonal are all zero; the term usually refers to square matrices. Trace (linear algebra)In linear algebra, the trace of a square matrix A, denoted tr(A), is defined to be the sum of elements on the main diagonal (from the upper left to the lower right) of A. The trace is only defined for a square matrix (n × n). It can be proven that the trace of a matrix is the sum of its (complex) eigenvalues (counted with multiplicities). It can also be proven that tr(AB) = tr(BA) for any two matrices A and B. This implies that similar matrices have the same trace.

Hamiltonian mechanicsHamiltonian mechanics emerged in 1833 as a reformulation of Lagrangian mechanics. LAPACKLAPACK ("Linear Algebra Package") is a standard software library for numerical linear algebra. It provides routines for solving systems of linear equations and linear least squares, eigenvalue problems, and singular value decomposition. It also includes routines to implement the associated matrix factorizations such as LU, QR, Cholesky and Schur decomposition. LAPACK was originally written in FORTRAN 77, but moved to Fortran 90 in version 3.2 (2008). The routines handle both real and complex matrices in both single and double precision.
Poisson manifoldIn differential geometry, a field in mathematics, a Poisson manifold is a smooth manifold endowed with a Poisson structure. The notion of Poisson manifold generalises that of symplectic manifold, which in turn generalises the phase space from Hamiltonian mechanics. A Poisson structure (or Poisson bracket) on a smooth manifold is a functionon the vector space of smooth functions on , making it into a Lie algebra subject to a Leibniz rule (also known as a Poisson algebra).
Singular valueIn mathematics, in particular functional analysis, the singular values, or s-numbers of a compact operator acting between Hilbert spaces and , are the square roots of the (necessarily non-negative) eigenvalues of the self-adjoint operator (where denotes the adjoint of ). The singular values are non-negative real numbers, usually listed in decreasing order (σ1(T), σ2(T), ...). The largest singular value σ1(T) is equal to the operator norm of T (see Min-max theorem).
