Rüdiger UrbankeRüdiger L. Urbanke obtained his Dipl. Ing. degree from the Vienna University of Technology, Austria in 1990 and the M.Sc. and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, MO, in 1992 and 1995, respectively. He held a position at the Mathematics of Communications Department at Bell Labs from 1995 till 1999 before becoming a faculty member at the School of Computer & Communication Sciences (I&C) of EPFL. He is a member of the Information Processing Group. He is principally interested in the analysis and design of iterative coding schemes, which allow reliable transmission close to theoretical limits at low complexities. Such schemes are part of most modern communications standards, including wireless transmission, optical communication and hard disk storage. More broadly, his research focuses on the analysis of graphical models and the application of methods from statistical physics to problems in communications. From 2000-2004 he was an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory and he is currently on the board of the series "Foundations and Trends in Communications and Information Theory." In 2017 he was President of the Information Theory Society. From 2009 till 2012 he was the head of the I&C doctoral school, in 2013 he served as Dean a. i. of I&C, and since 2016 he is the Associated Dean for teaching of I&C. He is a co-author of the book "Modern Coding Theory" published by Cambridge University Press. Pascal FuaPascal Fua received an engineering degree from Ecole Polytechnique, Paris, in 1984 and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Orsay in 1989. He then worked at SRI International and INRIA Sophia-Antipolis as a Computer Scientist. He joined EPFL in 1996 where he is now a Professor in the School of Computer and Communication Science and heads the Computer Vision Laboratory. His research interests include shape modeling and motion recovery from images, analysis of microscopy images, and Augmented Reality. His research interests include shape modeling and motion recovery from images, analysis of microscopy images, and machine learning. He has (co)authored over 300 publications in refereed journals and conferences. He is an IEEE Fellow and has been an Associate Editor of IEEE journal Transactions for Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. He often serves as program committee member, area chair, and program chair of major vision conferences and has cofounded three spinoff companies (Pix4D, PlayfulVision, and NeuralConcept).
Alfio QuarteroniOf italian nationality, Alfio Quarteroni was born on May 30th 1952. He pursued his studies in mathematics at University of Pavia and at University of Paris VI. In 1986 he was nominated full professor at Catholic University of Brescia, later professor in mathematics at University of Minnesota at Minneapolis and professor in numerical analysis at Politecnico di Milano. He is designated full professor in 1997 and enters into service with EPFL in 1998. At EPFL, he teaches numerical analysis to engineers and mathematicians and holds specialized courses about mathematical modelling and scientific computing for master and PhD students. He had been scientific director of CRS4, plenary speaker of more than two hundred international conferences; he is member of the European Academy of Sciences, the Italian Academy of Sciences, the Lombard Academy of Science and Letters. He is Editor in Chief of two book series (MS&A and Unitext) by Springer, associate editor of 25 international journals. He has been plenary speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians ICM2006. He had been responsible of several European research networks. His team has carried out the aerodynamic and hydrodynamic simulations for the optimization of Alinghi, the Swiss sailing yacht that has won two editions of the America's Cup in 2003 and 2007.
Sebastian GautschSebastian Gautsch est adjoint du directeur de section Microtechnique depuis février 2021.Il a obtenu son diplôme en électronique physique de l'Université de Neuchâtel en Suisse en 1998. Il a effectué son doctorat dans le domaine des microsystèmes à l'Institut de Microtechnique (IMT) de l'Université de Neuchâtel en 2001. Sa thèse en collaboration avec le Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) de la NASA, a mené à l'envoi d'un Microscope à Force Atomique (AFM) à bord de la mission sur Mars Phoenix en 2008. Ce projet a été relaté de manière fréquente dans les medias nationaux . En parallèle à ses activités de recherche, et après avoir poursuivi une carrière internationale en natation jusqu'en 2003, il a obtenu le certificat fédéral en coaching du sport en 2007 délivré par l'association Swiss Olympic. Il a entraîné l'équipe élite du Red-Fish Neuchâtel entre 2004 et 2009 et a mis sur pied le projet de promotion de la natation olympique dans le canton de Neuchâtel. Il fut membre de la délégation d'entraîneurs lors de plusieurs événements internationaux de natation et qualifia plus de 20 nageurs pour des championnats européens, mondiaux et les jeux Olympiques de Pékin en 2008. Entre 2004 et 2013 il a dirigé les activités de recherche dans le domaine des outils en nanoscience à l'Institut de Microtechnique de l'EPFL au sein du laboratoire des capteurs, actionneurs et microsystèmes (SAMLAB) de Prof. Nico de Rooij. En 2011, il a également dirigé les activités d'écritures par faisceau d'électrons au Centre Suisse d'Electronique et de Microtechnique (CSEM). Il fut à l'origine de la création de la Société Mars Suisse dont il est actuellement le vice-président. Entre 2011 et 2018, il a enseigné à la haute école spécialisée du canton de Berne (BFH) dans le domaine des microtechniques et techniques médicales. Entre 2012 et 2020 il fut responsable de la coordination des stages industriels pour étudiants Master à la faculté des sciences et techniques de l'ingénieur (STI). Dans cette fonction, il a mis sur pied les projets de master coordonnés en entreprise , la journée industrie de la faculté STI, et le label stages durables. Entre 2018 et 2020 il fut responsable des activités d'outreach de la faculté STI, avec notamment les stages de recherche d'été E3 et le workshop Engineering PhD Summit.
