A valgus deformity is a condition in which the bone segment distal to a joint is angled outward, that is, angled laterally, away from the body's midline. The opposite deformation, where the twist or angulation is directed medially, toward the center of the body, is called varus. Common causes of valgus knee (genu valgum or "knock-knee") in adults include arthritis of the knee and traumatic injuries. Rheumatoid knee commonly presents as valgus knee. Osteoarthritis knee may also sometimes present with valgus deformity though varus deformity is common. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to correct valgus deformity is surgically difficult and requires specialized implants called constrained condylar knees. Ankle: talipes valgus (from Latin talus = ankle and pes = foot) – outward turning of the heel, resulting in a 'flat foot' presentation. Elbows: cubitus valgus (from Latin cubitus = elbow) – forearm is angled away from the body Foot: pes valgus (from Latin pes = foot) – a medial deviation of the foot at subtalar joint. Varus deformity

A varus deformity is an excessive inward angulation (medial angulation, that is, towards the body's midline) of the distal segment of a bone or joint. The opposite of varus is called valgus. Ex: Varus deformity results in a decreased Q angle of the knee joint. The terms varus and valgus always refer to the direction that the distal segment of the joint points. For example, in a valgus deformity of the knee, the distal part of the leg below the knee is deviated outward, in relation to the femur, resulting in a knock-kneed appearance.

Genou

Le genou est le segment du membre inférieur situé entre la cuisse et la jambe. Il enferme l'articulation du genou. Sa partie antérieure est occupée par la patella palpable sous la peau. Sa partie postérieure correspond à la fosse poplitée. Le genou a pour limite supérieure la ligne circulaire qui passe à deux travers de doigt au dessus de la patella. Sa limite inférieure est la ligne circulaire passant par l'extrémité inférieure de la tubérosité du tibia.

En anatomie humaine, le tibia est un os long pair du membre inférieur. Il constitue avec la fibula le squelette de la jambe. C'est le deuxième plus long os du corps humain, le plus long étant le fémur. En latin, tibia signifie « flûte ». Le mot peut s'expliquer par l'analogie de forme entre l'os et l'instrument, et donc aussi par l'usage possible comme flûte du tibia de certains oiseaux tels que la grue, de certains animaux comme le mouton, voire de l'homme, l'os ayant été vidé de sa moelle et percé.
