Cognitive tests are assessments of the cognitive capabilities of humans and other animals. Tests administered to humans include various forms of IQ tests; those administered to animals include the mirror test (a test of visual self-awareness) and the T maze test (which tests learning ability). Such testing is used in psychology and psychometrics, as well as other fields studying human and animal intelligence. Modern cognitive tests originated through the work of James McKeen Cattell who coined the term "mental tests". They followed Francis Galton's development of physical and physiological tests. For example, Galton measured strength of grip and height and weight. He established an "Anthropometric Laboratory" in the 1880s where patrons paid to have physical and physiological attributes measured. Galton's measurements had an enormous influence on psychology. Mental disorders, e.g. depression and dementia, are categorized as priority conditions according to the World Health Organization (WHO). When diagnosing, psychologists employ structured questionnaires/interviews, and different cognitive tests. Although accurate, there is an increasing necessity of developing digital mental health support technologies to alleviate the burden faced by professionals. In this paper, we propose a multi-modal approach for modeling the communication process employed by patients being part of a clinical interview or a cognitive test. The language-based modality, inspired by the Lexical Availability (LA) theory from psycho-linguistics, identifies the most accessible vocabulary of the interviewed subject and use it as features in a classification process. The acoustic-based modality is processed by a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained on signals of speech that predominantly contained voice source characteristics. In the end, a late fusion technique, based on majority voting, assigns the final classification. Results show the complementarity of both modalities, reaching an overall Macro-F1 of 84% and 90% for Depression and Alzheimer's dementia respectively.

Central nervous system microbleeds in the acute phase are associated with structural integrity by DTI one year after mild traumatic brain injury: A longitudinal study

Introduction: Several imaging modalities are under investigation to unravel the pathophysiological mystery of delayed performance deficits in patients after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Although both imaging and neuropsychological studies have been conducted, only few data on longitudinal correlations of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) and extensive neuropsychological testing exist. Methods: MRI with T1- and T2-weighted, SWI and DTI sequences at baseline and 12 months of 30 mTBI patients were compared with 20 healthy controls. Multiparametric assessment included neuropsychological testing of cognitive performance and post-concussion syndrome (PCS) at baseline, 3 and 12 months post-injury. Data analysis encompassed assessment of cerebral microbleeds (Mb) in SWI, tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) of DTI (VBM-DTI). Imaging markers were correlated with neuropsychological testing to evaluate sensitivity to cognitive performance and post-concussive symptoms. Results: Patients with Mb in SWI in the acute phase showed worse performance in several cognitive tests at baseline and in the follow-ups during the chronic phase and higher symptom severity in the post concussion symptom scale (PCSS) at twelve months post-injury. In the acute phase there was no statistical difference in structural integrity as measured with DTI between mTBI patients and healthy controls. At twelve months post-injury, loss of structural integrity in mTBI patients was found in nearly all DTI indices compared to healthy controls. Conclusions: Presence of Mb detected by SWI was associated with worse cognitive outcome and persistent PCS in mTBI patients, while DTI did not prove to predict neuropsychological outcome in the acute phase. (Visual) Endophenotypes in schizophrenia research

Objective: Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous disease strongly influenced by genetic disposition. However, genetic studies have shown that each single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) contributes very little to the disease. For this reason, endophenotypes, located in between the genetic and clinical level, have become of great interest. Due to its heterogeneity, schizophrenia is likely not caused by one abnormality. Here, we asked the question to what extent deficits in various endophenotypes tap into the same deficits of schizophrenia. Methods: We tested schizophrenia patients, their relatives, and controls with a battery of perceptual and cognitive tests, such as visual backward masking, out of body experience, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), verbal fluency, and the continous performance task (CPT). Results: First, we found that visual backward masking is an extremely sensitive endophenotype of schizophrenia. Deficits are specific to the psychosis spectrum and not evident in depressive patients and abstinent alcoholics. As expected from an endophenotype, not only the patients but also their siblings show clear performance deficits, as well as adolescents with psychosis. Both genetic analysis and EEG recordings point to deficiencies in the cholinergic system. We then compared performance in visual backward masking with other tests. Surprisingly, performance in most tests did not correlate with each other. Conclusions: Our results suggest that each endophenotype is sensitive to different abnormal mechanisms. Schizophrenia is much more complex than previously thought. Heterogeneity can be best attacked by the combined investigation of sensitive endophenotypes.
