Sedgley

Sedgley is a town in the north of the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley, in the West Midlands, England. Historically part of Staffordshire, Sedgley is on the A459 road between Wolverhampton and Dudley, and was formerly the seat of an ancient manor comprising several smaller villages, including Gornal, Gospel End, Woodsetton, Ettingshall, Coseley, and Brierley (now Bradley). In 1894, the manor was split to create the Sedgley and Coseley urban districts, the bulk of which were later merged into the Dudley County Borough in 1966.

Pompe à feu

Une pompe à feu est une pompe actionnée par la vapeur. C'est probablement la première application des machines à vapeur. Une première pompe à feu est inventée par Thomas Savery (1650-1715) et Thomas Newcomen (1664-1729), reprenant l'idée du cylindre piston à vapeur de Denis Papin (1690). Elle sera perfectionnée ultérieurement par James Watt, puis par Jacques-Constantin Périer. Les pompes à feu furent employées pour l’exhaure et en fontainerie.

Smethwick

Smethwick (ˈsmɛðᵻk) is an industrial town in Sandwell, West Midlands, England. It lies west of Birmingham city centre. Historically it was in Staffordshire and then Worcestershire before being placed into then West Midlands County. In 2019, the ward of Smethwick had an estimated population of 15,246, while the wider built-up area subdivision has a population of 53,653. It was suggested that the name Smethwick meant "smiths' place of work", but a more recent interpretation has suggested the name means "the settlement on the smooth land".

Wednesbury

Wednesbury (ˈwɛnzbəri) is a market town in Sandwell in the West Midlands County, England. It is located near the source of the River Tame. At the 2011 Census the town had a population of 37,817. The substantial remains of a large ditch excavated in St Mary's Road in 2008, following the contours of the hill and predating the Early Medieval period, has been interpreted as part of a hilltop enclosure and possibly the Iron Age hillfort long suspected on the site.

Stourbridge

Stourbridge (ˈstaʊəbrɪdʒ) is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley in the West Midlands, England, situated on the River Stour. Historically in Worcestershire, it was the centre of British glass making during the Industrial Revolution. The 2011 UK census recorded the town's population as 63,298. Stourbridge is about west of Birmingham. It is part of the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley at the southwestern edge of the Black Country and West Midlands conurbation, Stourbridge includes the villages and suburbs of Amblecote, Lye, Norton, Oldswinford, Pedmore, Stambermill, Stourton, Wollaston, Wollescote and Wordsley.

Coseley

Coseley (ˈkoʊzli ) is a village in the Dudley Metropolitan Borough, in the West Midlands County, England. It is situated north of Dudley itself, on the border with Wolverhampton. Though it is a part of the Dudley North constituency. It also falls within the Wolverhampton South-East parliamentary constituency. Coseley was originally a village in the ancient manor of Sedgley. In 1867, it joined with Brierley and Ettingshall to break away from the parish of Sedgley and formed Lower Sedgley Local Board District.

Sandwell

Sandwell est un district métropolitain des Midlands de l'Ouest. Il doit son nom au prieuré de Sandwell. Il chevauche le Black Country et la conurbation des Midlands de l'Ouest, et comprend les villes de Blackheath, Cradley Heath, Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Tividale, Wednesbury et West Bromwich. Cette dernière est la ville la plus peuplée du district. Le conseil de district siège cependant à Oldbury. Le district est créé le , par le Local Government Act de 1972.

Bridgnorth

Bridgnorth est une ville du Shropshire en Angleterre, dans la vallée de la Severn. La ville est divisée en deux parties, la ville basse et la ville haute, nommées ainsi du fait de leur position par rapport au fleuve Severn qui sépare la ville haute sur la rive droite de la ville basse sur la rive gauche. Bridgnorth (Bridgenorth, littéralement pont nord) est nommée ainsi du fait d'un pont construit sur le fleuve Severn plus au nord qu'un pont plus ancien à Quatford. C'est le chef-lieu et la ville la plus peuplée du district de Bridgnorth.

Halesowen

Halesowen est une ville des Midlands de l'Ouest, en Angleterre. Située dans le district métropolitain de Dudley, elle comptait habitants au moment du recensement de 2001. Halesowen est la ville natale du poète William Shenstone, où se trouve aussi sa propriété des . Le transport dans la ville est supervisé par Transport for West Midlands, l'autorité des transports du comté. Halesowen n'est plus desservie par une gare.

Beeching cuts

La politique des Beeching cuts (ou Axe Beeching) est un programme de réduction et de restructuration du réseau ferroviaire britannique. Il a été adopté sur la base de deux rapports, The Reshaping of British Railways (1963) et The Development of the Major Railway Trunk Routes (1965), du baron (publiés par le British Railways Board).
