L’alimentation en eau potable (sigle : AEP) est l’ensemble des équipements, des services et des actions qui permettent, en partant d’une eau brute, de produire une eau conforme aux normes de potabilité en vigueur, distribuée ensuite aux consommateurs. On considère quatre étapes distinctes dans cette alimentation : prélèvements - captages (eau de surface ou eau souterraine) ; traitement pour potabiliser l'eau ; adduction (transport et stockage) ; distribution au consommateur.
Un grand ensemble, parfois qualifié de cité ou abusivement cité HLM (car beaucoup de grands ensembles, même parmi les plus délabrés, sont des copropriétés et non des logements sociaux), est un type de forme urbaine, généralement de grande étendue, censé accueillir un grand nombre d'habitants et, dans une certaine mesure, caractérisé par l'aspect répétitif de ses bâtiments, généralement une série de barres et de tours. La composition d'un grand ensemble peut varier du tout au tout d'un contexte à l'autre.
La porosité est l'ensemble des vides (pores) d'un matériau, ces vides sont remplis par des fluides (liquides ou gaz). Les matériaux poreux sont très généralement des solides, mais il existe aussi des liquides poreux. La porosité est aussi une grandeur physique définie comme le rapport entre le volume des vides et le volume total d'un milieu poreux, sa valeur est comprise entre 0 et 1 (ou, en pourcentage, entre 0 et 100 %) : où : est la porosité, le volume des pores, et le volume total du matériau, c'est-à-dire la somme du volume de solide et du volume des pores.

La purification de l'eau regroupe l'ensemble des techniques et méthodes permettant d'obtenir de l'« eau de procédé » à partir d'eau potable. Beaucoup d'industries utilisent de l'eau douce pour leurs procédés de production. L'eau de procédé peut avoir différents noms – et différentes caractéristiques – selon l'industrie et l'application, par exemple : « eau purifiée » et « eau pour préparation injectable » (eau PPI) dans l'industrie pharmaceutique ; « eau ultrapure » ou « eau » en microélectronique.
